Superior Physician
Chapter 172: Just What I Wished For
Chapter 172 -170: Just What I Wished For
The child’s parents had been quite offensive before, yet they were willing to swallow their pride and come back seeking treatment…
Zhou Mo, the resident gossip of the Qi Yue Medical Research Center, finally gave Yu Zhiming an answer during the lunch break after some arduous investigation.
“I heard that after that guy Qiu Yi diagnosed the child’s mother with Munchausen syndrome by proxy, the mother was separated from the child and sent to receive psychotherapy.”
“The child went back to their home in the Capital City and supposedly fell gravely ill right after. They say he almost kicked the bucket.”
“I guess that illness made the family feel that the child’s frailty and sickness were very real, and that they needed to find the root cause.”
“There are only a handful of famous doctors who can treat that child, and they’ve consulted almost all of them. They couldn’t possibly leave out our Director, right?”
Zhou Mo, his face flushed and his eyes shining, looked excited and said, “As for saving face, it’s worthless compared to the child’s health and life.”
“Dr. Yu, don’t you think so?”
Yu Zhiming nodded with a hum of agreement.
Zhou Mo then boomed, “That Qiu Yi! He went to all that trouble to snatch the patient away, but still couldn’t cure the illness. He probably doesn’t have the face to show himself in public now, right?”
Yu Zhiming said thoughtfully, “Qiu Yi’s diagnosis wasn’t necessarily wrong.”
He analyzed, “The child was already frail and sickly. Being shuttled back and forth between the Capital City and Binhai, on top of being separated from his beloved mother—it’s not surprising he’d fall ill.”
“Recovering from an illness is a slow process, and so is recuperating one’s health!”
“It hasn’t been that long, yet the family is already so impatient to come back to us. They lack even a shred of patience.”
Qiao Lei interjected, “It’s not that they’re impatient. Maybe the child’s condition is so bad that they don’t have much time left.”
The thought of this very real possibility made Yu Zhiming’s heart sink.
‘If the child’s condition really is that bad, I wonder if he can withstand Teacher Qi’s methods?’
Zhou Mo huffed, “Whatever the case, it’s still a slap in the face for Qiu Yi. A huge one at that.”
Yu Zhiming chuckled. “It’ll only be a real slap in the face once Teacher Qi confirms the cause and finds a solution.”
“Let’s hope this Sunday’s trip to the Capital City is fruitful. If we come back empty-handed, it won’t be someone else’s face we’re slapping, but our own we’re losing.”
Zhou Mo said, full of confidence, “The Director is rich in clinical experience and incredibly knowledgeable.”
“Dr. Yu, your skills in auscultation and percussion are unparalleled. As long as you can find even the slightest clue, the Director is sure to make a discovery.”
“Hey, Dr. Yu, you and the Director are such a complementary pair. It’s a match made in heaven.”
‘A match made in heaven?’ Yu Zhiming shot a sidelong glance at Zhou Mo, who already knew he had misspoken.
“Wait, you’re going to the Capital City on Sunday?”
Qiao Lei suddenly realized and asked, “Dr. Yu, do you need me to go with you?”
“Also, also, Dr. Yu, don’t you have to go to the Furong Beauty Salon on Sunday?”
Yu Zhiming replied softly, “Teacher Qi and I have already discussed it. My contribution for the Capital City trip will be to give the child a detailed full-body examination and identify any and all physical problems.”
“As for diagnosing the case and finding the root cause, I won’t be needed for that.”
“We’re taking an early morning flight to the Capital City. After I finish the examination, I’ll fly back. It shouldn’t interfere with my health lecture at the Furong Club.”
Yu Zhiming met Qiao Lei’s gaze and said, “This time, I’m going to the Capital City for a house call with Teacher Qi.”
“I’m essentially Teacher Qi’s assistant. It wouldn’t be appropriate for an assistant to bring his own assistant.”
“You don’t need to go.”
Hearing this, Qiao Lei was quite dejected…
Yu Zhiming closed his eyes to rest for a dozen or so minutes. Before starting the afternoon’s physical examinations, he went to the inpatient ward on the third floor.
Luo Qing was currently in a sterile ward. She could only be moved to a regular ward after the infusion catheter was removed in five days.
Yu Zhiming went to the large glass window of the sterile ward and, along with Luo Ying who was keeping watch there, looked at Luo Qing inside.
He could clearly see the expression of pained endurance on Luo Qing’s face.
“Dr. Yu, is it very painful?”
Yu Zhiming hummed in affirmation and said, “For a brain injury, the best method for pain relief is an induced coma.”
“But that would cause further brain damage. For now, she can only take conventional painkillers and endure it with her willpower.”
Luo Ying looked at her niece, who occasionally writhed on the hospital bed, and sighed.
“All morning, I haven’t heard this girl cry out once. She really, really wants to see again.”
Luo Ying turned to Yu Zhiming, her face full of expectation, and asked, “Dr. Yu, after this treatment…”
Yu Zhiming saw that Luo Ying’s eyes were filled with tears, but he could only tell her the truth.
“The purpose of this treatment was only to remove the blood clot and create favorable conditions for the injured optic nerve to recover.”
“Whether Luo Qing can ultimately recover some of her vision mainly depends on the severity of her optic nerve injury.”
“And how much can she recover?”
Yu Zhiming said frankly, “In that regard, we can only provide some medicinal support. There’s very little else we can do.”
Luo Ying wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes and said, “Dr. Yu, if everything goes smoothly, how long until we see some results?”
Yu Zhiming said slowly, “If the blood clot removal is ideal, if the connection between the optic nerve and the brain’s central hub is still viable, and if the optic nerve still has activity and hasn’t completely necrotized…”
“…then in a month, we should be able to measure a light-sensitive reaction under laboratory conditions.”
After a brief pause, Yu Zhiming continued, “Once a light-sensitive reaction is detected, a long recovery period will follow.”
“It took me more than two years to recover my eyesight to its current level.”
Yu Zhiming added, “With Luo Qing’s injury, even if everything goes as we hope and her recovery is ideal, we’ll be thankful if her left eye can reach 0.2 or 0.3 vision.”
Luo Ying turned to look at her niece in the ward again.
“Qingqing is so strong, and she’s met a wonderful doctor like you, Dr. Yu. She’ll definitely be able to see again.”
“She definitely will!!!”
Luo Qing, inside the hospital room, seemed to sense that Yu Zhiming had arrived outside and was watching her through the window. She weakly lifted her hand and gave a faint wave toward the window.
Yu Zhiming raised his hand as well, and waved back at Luo Qing…
At 6:10 in the evening, Yu Zhiming finished a full day’s work, having completed physical examinations for one hundred and twenty people.
During today’s examinations, he discovered that a seventy-one-year-old retired employee had early-stage prostate cancer.
Prostate cancer is common in the elderly and is also known as the “cancer that doesn’t kill you.”
Compared to malignant tumors in other organs, it is a relatively slow-growing cancer.
As long as it’s discovered and treated early, the current prognosis is excellent.
The five-year survival rate for patients can reach nearly 100%, and the 10-year survival rate can also exceed 90%.
It’s also common for patients to live for another twenty or thirty years.
Many elderly prostate cancer patients ultimately pass away due to other issues…
Yu Zhiming first went to the third-floor ward to check on Luo Qing’s recovery. When he returned to the main office, he was surprised to find quite a few people waiting for him.
Besides Teacher Qi, Director Liu Yun from gynecology, and Dr. Ding Ye, there were also Academician Tan Ying, Academician Zhang Yuanzhao, Gu Qingran, Wang Yaxian from Jiaoda Affiliated Hospital, and others.
Academician Tan was the first to speak, smiling. “Dr. Yu, I’ve said before that there’s a lack of communication and interaction between us.”
“Dr. Yu, I checked. You don’t have any other work scheduled for tonight.”
“Shall we all get together?”
Yu Zhiming smiled faintly. “I would be delighted. Please, just give me a moment to change my clothes…”
