Chapter 143: Chapter 142: A Reprimand

After work started in the afternoon, Yu Zhiming received all the kidney-related test results and analysis for the patient with kidney disease who was admitted yesterday.

He had to admit, having a work assistant was great. For many things, Yu Zhiming just had to say the word.

He had given Qiao Lei instructions last night, and this morning, Qiao Lei had taken the patient to get the necessary tests done.

Yu Zhiming reviewed the patient’s CBC, comprehensive metabolic panel, urinalysis, and quantitative urine protein results. Combining this data with his own physical examination and intuitive assessment of the patient’s kidneys, he diagnosed it as focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, tip variant.

This was a relatively common glomerular pathology, with clinical manifestations typically including asymptomatic proteinuria and edema.

The condition is somewhat hereditary and can be passed on to the next generation.

Without aggressive treatment, the disease would continue to progress, eventually developing into end-stage renal disease and leading to kidney failure...

Yu Zhiming took the patient’s test results, his own analysis and diagnosis, and the meticulously prepared prescription and treatment plan to Teacher Qi for guidance.

After reviewing it, Qi Yue didn’t say much, simply recommending a Chief Physician from the nephrology department.

Yu Zhiming eagerly hurried over to the nephrology department and found Doctor Tian.

The doctor was quite enthusiastic. He set aside his work, and they had a detailed discussion for nearly an hour about the kidney patient Yu Zhiming had taken on. Afterward, he offered his guidance on Yu Zhiming’s proposed treatment plan.

On the way back, Yu Zhiming, who had gone over in high spirits, was now completely deflated, looking utterly defeated.

It wasn’t that his diagnosis was wrong.

Dr. Yu’s diagnosis had been spot on; Doctor Tian affirmed it.

It was just that under Doctor Tian’s guidance, the prescription and treatment plan he had created was drastically altered.

At first glance, it still looked like the same prescription; only three medications had been added or removed, and the dosages had only changed slightly.

But in his heart, Yu Zhiming knew the truth.

His prescription had undergone what was essentially a complete teardown and reconstruction. The core therapeutic approach behind it had fundamentally changed.

"Feeling discouraged?" Qi Yue asked with a smile.

Yu Zhiming shook his head, then nodded. "Yes, I am a little discouraged."

"But then I think about it—Doctor Tian is an expert who’s been immersed in nephrology for a decade or two, while I’m just a young doctor who’s barely scratched the surface. A gap this large is perfectly normal."

Yu Zhiming sighed again and said with self-awareness, "Teacher Qi, my strengths are in diagnosis and hands-on procedures. When it comes to the actual treatment part, I’m really quite lacking."

Qi Yue smiled. "Compared to diagnosis and hands-on procedures, formulating the right treatment is something that requires a lot more accumulated experience."

"That’s a gap in time and clinical practice that even talent can’t bridge in a short period."

Qi Yue took the opportunity to offer some advice. "Zhiming, don’t delude yourself into thinking you can master everything."

"That’s impossible in the real world. You have to learn to make choices and focus on making your strengths even stronger."

"As for your shortcomings, you can compensate for them through collaboration."

Yu Zhiming grunted in agreement. "Teacher Qi, in the future, when choosing cases to practice on, I’ll be more selective and focus on my strengths and development path."

Qi Yue nodded in satisfaction. "Go and treat your patient. Since you’ve taken the case, you have to be responsible for it to the very end..."

Yu Zhiming left the director’s office and went upstairs to the inpatient ward. He entered the prescription and medical orders for the kidney patient, then briefed the attending nurse on the key points to monitor.

On his way back, he heard the chattering and laughter of several women coming from one of the patient rooms.

Yu Zhiming stopped to look...

He saw Zhou Mo and three of the center’s young nurses gathered around an impossibly handsome boy, giggling and laughing.

What annoyed Yu Zhiming even more was that the boy was holding an all-too-familiar jar of sweet potato strips.

This morning, Yu Zhiming had been in a hurry getting out of his car and had forgotten to bring his snacks, including the sweet potato strips, with him.

At lunchtime, he had run back to the parking lot, brought the large bag of snacks—sweet potato strips, peanuts, and walnuts—back to the main office, and shared some with all his colleagues.

He had specifically given Zhou Mo two extra jars of sweet potato strips.

And this boy in the patient room, the one who was handsome to the point of looking androgynous, was a new patient Qi Yue had admitted this morning.

Since the beginning of the year, the boy had suffered over a dozen unexplained fainting spells, but visits to several hospitals had failed to uncover the cause.

This morning, Yu Zhiming had given him a full-body examination.

’His internal organs are fine!’

’Cerebral circulation is normal, too...’

Yu Zhiming walked into the room with a stern expression, and the cheerful laughter that filled the air instantly vanished.

"Zhou Mo, the third batch of narcolepsy volunteers. Have you confirmed with all of them?"

Zhou Mo nodded. "Yes, Dr. Yu. I’ve confirmed with every single one. They’ll all arrive at the hospital on time tomorrow!"

"And what about recruiting future volunteers?" Yu Zhiming pressed.

Zhou Mo replied softly, "As of last night, we’ve had two hundred thirty-five people sign up."

She added, "As long as we have enough funding, recruiting volunteers is actually quite easy."

For their project collecting physical data on narcolepsy patients, volunteers were reimbursed for round-trip travel expenses. Not to mention, with food and lodging provided, they could earn fifteen hundred yuan just for patiently undergoing three days of data monitoring.

Understandably, people were quite eager to sign up for something like that.

Seeing that Zhou Mo answered his questions fluidly, Yu Zhiming found another pretext to be stern. "Zhou Mo, you’re the office manager for the center and the director’s assistant."

"What if the director or other colleagues have something urgent and can’t find you at a time like this?"

The corner of Zhou Mo’s mouth twitched, but she replied obediently, "Dr. Yu, I’ll head back to the office now."

Yu Zhiming then turned to the three young nurses.

"Are you all finished with your work?"

"Don’t you realize that gathering here to laugh and chat can disturb the patients’ rest?"

The three young nurses all lowered their heads and scurried out of the room in single file.

Yu Zhiming gave the handsome boy a small smile, then turned and left the room with Zhou Mo.

They had only taken a few steps down the corridor when Yu Zhiming overheard them whispering about him.

"We were just talking for a minute. Why pull such a long face and lecture us? He’s not even our supervisor, acting like he’s the director."

"Oh, come on, isn’t it obvious he’s just jealous? With that kid around for comparison, his title as ’handsomest doctor’ is in jeopardy."

"Let’s just drop it. We were in the wrong. If the head nurse had caught us, it would’ve been much worse than a simple scolding..."

A short while after Yu Zhiming and Zhou Mo returned to the main office, one walking behind the other, the hospital director’s secretary, He Yingjun, arrived.

"Dr. Yu, there’s a project signing ceremony and reception this Friday at three in the afternoon. It’s in the event hall on the second floor of the main administration building. Your attendance is required."

He Yingjun added, "That means the physical exams on Friday can only run for the morning. Sixty people."

Yu Zhiming said, "Oh," and then asked, "Can I bring a guest to the ceremony?"

He Yingjun chuckled. "The event doesn’t have any specific rules about bringing guests, but if you want to bring someone, Dr. Yu, it certainly won’t be a problem."

"Dr. Yu, I’ll go inform Director Qi now..."

Once He Yingjun had gone to the director’s office, Zhou Mo sidled up to Yu Zhiming.

"A guest? Is it that girl, Ms. Gu?"

"My Fourth Sister!"

Yu Zhiming answered curtly, then added, "I want her to meet some talented young men."

He then had another thought. "Zhou Mo, you’re a local. On your days off, if you’re free, could you take my Fourth Sister to some social gatherings?"

"My Fourth Sister is new here. She needs to meet more people and integrate into life in Binhai as quickly as possible."

"No problem, leave it to me," Zhou Mo said enthusiastically.

She started planning aloud, "The weather isn’t so hot anymore. We could get some friends together and go out this Sunday."

Qiao Lei scooted over to join them.

"Can I come, too? Singing, dancing, instigating drinking contests, getting into fights, cracking jokes, livening up the party... I can do it all."

"Bring me along, and I guarantee you won’t be bored."

Zhou Mo shot Qiao Lei a look and said disdainfully, "We’ll see..."
