Superior Physician
Chapter 131 - 130: Your and My Benefactor
Chapter 131: Chapter 130: Your and My Benefactor
The young patient from the Capital City gave Yu Zhiming a firsthand look at what a trip for a wealthy family entailed.
They arrived at three in the afternoon, but Yu Zhiming later learned it wasn’t the young patient and his family. It was a six-person advance party led by a butler.
According to the butler, their "young master" wouldn’t be arriving until the next day.
They had come in advance, primarily to prepare the way for the young master and handle the hospital admission procedures.
Most importantly, they were also tasked with completely redecorating the most luxurious private room in the central building to meet the young master’s minimum standards for his stay...
This group of people moved everything out of the room and gave it a thorough cleaning.
What they did next left everyone at the center dumbfounded, amazed at how little of the world they had seen.
Not only did they lay down a new carpet they had brought with them, but they also started assembling a large, solid wood bed...
After listening to Zhou Mo’s vivid description, Yu Zhiming couldn’t help but sigh. "A prince’s procession would be no more grand."
"Are wealthy people these days all so concerned with pomp and circumstance? Sending an advance party to decorate a room to their liking."
Zhou Mo guessed, "Maybe this little rich kid has some quirks? Like you, who can’t sleep in a bed that’s not your own?"
Yu Zhiming shot Zhou Mo a glare.
Zhou Mo giggled and added enthusiastically, "They also said all the bedding has to be swapped out for what they brought."
"They said our hospital’s bedding is too coarse and not soft enough for their young master to sleep on."
She tutted. "I bet their young master is as fragile as a porcelain doll—can’t be touched, can’t be bumped."
Then, in a joking tone, Zhou Mo added, "Dr. Yu, you’d better be careful! When you’re doing the physical exam on that little master, don’t accidentally break him."
"From the looks of it, you definitely couldn’t afford to pay for the damages."
Yu Zhiming snorted softly. "If they’re worried we’ll break him, then they shouldn’t have come. We don’t offer a money-back guarantee for broken patients."
Just then, the connecting door to the adjacent director’s office swung open halfway, and Qi Yue’s voice drifted over.
"Zhiming, come in here for a moment."
Yu Zhiming walked briskly into the director’s office and asked with curiosity, "Teacher, did the parents of that young patient from the Capital City make a donation to us?"
"How else could they be allowed to remodel a patient room?"
Qi Yue grunted in affirmation. "They did. Six hundred thousand. And if we can find the root cause of the boy’s illness, they’ve indicated there will be an even larger donation."
"Zhiming, put some extra effort into this. You might even earn enough for that car you want from this one case."
Yu Zhiming replied earnestly, "Teacher, we’ll have to rely on you to solve this young patient’s problem."
"So many experts and veteran traditional Chinese medicine doctors in the Capital City couldn’t figure it out. With my limited skills, it’s highly unlikely I’ll find anything."
Qi Yue smiled faintly. "Just because those experts and veteran practitioners couldn’t find the problem, doesn’t mean you can’t."
"That’s already been proven to be true more than once."
After a pause, Qi Yue continued, "As for the young patient’s specific condition, we’ll discuss it in detail tomorrow after they’ve arrived and we’ve seen him in person."
"I called you in for something else."
Qi Yue said slowly, "Zhiming, that case you discovered—the one misdiagnosed as lung cancer—you didn’t handle it quite properly."
"Not properly?"
Yu Zhiming froze for a moment. "Teacher, did I do something wrong?"
Qi Yue said softly, "Strictly speaking, you didn’t do anything wrong. Your handling of the situation just wasn’t very... considerate."
"Zhiming, when the hospital evaluates us doctors, misdiagnosis is one of the key metrics."
"Of course, even the best doctors have moments of carelessness. Completely avoiding misdiagnosis is practically impossible."
"But a major error like misdiagnosing cancer has a significant impact, especially for a doctor applying for a promotion."
Yu Zhiming blinked, starting to understand.
"Teacher, the attending physician who made the lung cancer diagnosis... what promotion is he currently up for?"
Qi Yue explained, "His name is Su Yuanhai. He’s forty-three, a senior attending physician in the respiratory medicine department."
"Zhiming, you must be aware that the jump from attending physician to associate chief physician is the most competitive."
"There are many applicants, but a limited number of positions."
"If his skills aren’t particularly outstanding to begin with, and then you add a cancer misdiagnosis on top of it, his application this time is basically dead in the water."
Yu Zhiming scratched his head and grimaced. "Teacher, you can’t blame me for how this turned out, can you?"
Qi Yue grunted. "It was mainly Doctor Su’s bad luck."
"I’ve reviewed the young man’s case file."
"Severe pneumonia combined with an early-stage mediastinal tumor with very subtle symptoms. It made the scans look almost identical to lung cancer."
"With a case like that, even a Chief Physician could easily make the wrong call if they weren’t being meticulous and cautious."
Yu Zhiming asked cautiously, "Teacher, if someone else had been in my position yesterday, how would they have handled it?"
Qi Yue chuckled. "They would have first reassured the patient, then contacted the attending physician to discuss the case."
"Through that discussion, they’d help the attending physician realize the issue. Then, the attending himself would proactively contact the patient, order new tests, and amend the diagnosis."
"That way, it wouldn’t officially count as a misdiagnosis on his record."
Yu Zhiming let out a long "Oh..." "I understand, Teacher. I won’t repeat yesterday’s improper actions again."
Qi Yue sighed. "Zhiming, you might see this as doctors covering for each other."
"’Why should I help cover up someone else’s mistake?’"
"’But in my eyes, it’s a matter of professional courtesy. As long as it doesn’t cross any ethical lines, giving someone a heads-up helps create a friendly, supportive work environment.’"
"’After all, everyone makes a careless mistake now and then...’"
「Ning’an Hospital, in Vice Dean Gu’s office.」
Gu Qingran dragged his exhausted body back to the office, only to find Hua Si Fan sitting on the sofa in the reception area, leisurely sipping tea by himself.
"You really make yourself at home, don’t you? Treating this place like it’s your own turf."
Gu Qingran flopped onto the sofa opposite Hua Si Fan, poured himself a cup of tea, and downed it in one go.
"Any headway on the collaboration with Huashan Hospital?"
Gu Qingran let out a long breath. "Damn it all. The corporation and the hospital used up every connection and favor we’ve accumulated, and we bled money, but we finally got Huashan Hospital to budge."
"It was so damn hard!"
"Worth it?" Hua Si Fan asked.
Gu Qingran nodded emphatically. "Worth it. It’s do or die! Ning’an Hospital can’t keep hovering in obscurity like this, having the skills but not the reputation. We have to use a major event to break out and make a name for ourselves."
"This is the perfect opportunity."
Hua Si Fan gave a soft "Oh," and said, "Well, let me be the first to congratulate you on achieving your goal."
His gaze then shifted to a particular area below Gu Qingran’s waist.
"Did you get the aspiration done?"
The thought of the procedure made Gu Qingran’s scalp tingle.
"Did it. The motility is pretty good. I can have a kid."
"Once this collaboration with Huashan Hospital is settled, I’m planning to get into a serious relationship and have a kid."
Hua Si Fan shot him a contemptuous look.
"Every time you get a girlfriend, don’t you say you’re getting serious and it’s heading toward marriage?"
"This time, it’s for real! The realest of real!" Gu Qingran looked absolutely earnest, short of raising a hand to the heavens to swear an oath.
Hua Si Fan didn’t press the issue. He took a plastic-laminated sticky note from his pocket and handed it over.
Gu Qingran took the note and read the words aloud.
"’I heard a strange, crackling electrical sound in your car.’"
"This handwriting is awful. Did a first-grader write this? Huh, wait... it looks kind of familiar."
He put down the note, raised an eyebrow, and looked at Hua Si Fan, confused.
"That day, I went to Huashan Hospital on business. When I was leaving, I found this note on my car."
Hua Si Fan said slowly, then picked up his teacup for a sip before continuing his explanation.
"I took the car to a repair shop. The inspection revealed that someone had tampered with it."
Gu Qingran’s expression turned grim.
"So that time... it wasn’t an accidental fire?"
Hua Si Fan nodded. "I knew someone was getting impatient. I didn’t raise the alarm. On the way back to Jinling, I set fire to the car myself."
"After I got back, I accelerated my plans..."
"You know what happened after that. The ones who needed to be caught were caught, and the ones who needed to be purged were purged."
Hua Si Fan tapped the sticky note with his finger. "Today," he said slowly, "I found out who left this message."
Gu Qingran understood instantly.
"Yu Zhiming? From that self-criticism letter that was circulating online?"
Hua Si Fan nodded. "I had a handwriting expert do an analysis. It’s a match."
Gu Qingran burst out laughing. "Now that is fate! Absolutely, one-hundred-percent, written-in-the-stars fate!"
Suddenly, he slammed his hand on the coffee table and roared excitedly, "Hua Si Fan, what happened to you proves it! Dr. Yu is our lucky star!"
"I’m even more confident about this collaboration and our future now."
"Hey, Si Fan, Dr. Yu practically saved your life. How are you going to repay him?"
