Chapter 126: Chapter 125: Be There or Be Square

Yu Zhiming rode his bicycle in a hurry to the Emergency Department of Huashan Hospital, only to find another serious traffic accident had occurred.

Three were severely injured, and two had minor injuries.

Yu Zhiming used his special ability as a "human CT scanner" to quickly assess the injuries of the three severely wounded patients. He then assisted Director Zhao Shan in the emergency treatment of one of them.

It was another heart-pounding rescue effort that lasted for more than two hours.

The patient was incredibly lucky and had a strong will to live. Although multiple crises arose during the procedure and her heart even stopped once, her life was ultimately saved. She was sent to the ICU...

"It’s not that the patient was lucky; it’s that she was lucky to have met you."

Zhao Shan looked at Yu Zhiming like a man who hadn’t eaten in three days staring at a feast. His gaze couldn’t have been more intense.

"If you hadn’t accurately and quickly assessed her injuries and stopped the main source of bleeding right away, even nine lives wouldn’t have been enough for her to lose this time."

"Dr. Xiao Yu, come to the Emergency Department."

"All your skills could be put to their greatest use in the ER..."

Yu Zhiming quickly cut him off and refused, "Director Zhao, I’m a diagnostician. Gory emergency scenes like this in the ER aren’t for me. They’re really not."

The Emergency Department was the most exhausting and difficult department in the entire hospital, yet the compensation was comparatively the lowest.

Besides, Yu Zhiming didn’t want to be used as a human tool, running around putting out fires in the ER, rushing from one place to the next.

Also, during a rescue, the feeling of a patient’s life hanging by a thread—a thread held in your own hands—was thrilling, but it was far from pleasant. The pressure was immense.

Yu Zhiming wasn’t sure he could handle it indefinitely.

Seeing Yu Zhiming’s refusal, Zhao Shan didn’t press the matter. He knew it was just wishful thinking on his part.

Putting aside whether Yu Zhiming himself would agree, that guy Qi Yue had finally found such a precious disciple; he’d never let him go, not in a million years.

As Zhao Shan felt a mix of regret and envy, a new thought occurred to him. ’Maybe I should search the world for a good disciple of my own?’

He saw Yu Zhiming still standing there and waved a dismissive hand. "There’s nothing else for you here. You can go."

This annoyed Yu Zhiming. Such an attitude was a classic case of fawning over someone when you need them and turning your back when you don’t.

’Next time he calls with an emergency summons...’

To be honest, Yu Zhiming knew he wouldn’t dare refuse to come, unless he was truly tied up.

After all, if Director Zhao contacted him, it was surely a matter of life and death.

Yu Zhiming once again got on his small, foldable bicycle and started the journey home...

The reason he’d ridden his bike during the emergency was that, given Binhai’s traffic, a car might not have been any faster...

On his way to the hospital, Yu Zhiming had pedaled so hard his bike nearly flew. Then he’d spent two or three tense and busy hours at the hospital.

Now, on the way back, his mind had started to relax, and Yu Zhiming could feel the soreness in his legs and the ache in his body.

He rode along slowly and unsteadily, a pained grimace on his face.

Just as Yu Zhiming entered an old residential area that resembled a shantytown, he heard a familiar TAP... TAP... sound.

He looked up...

Not far ahead, under the dim light of a streetlight, Yu Zhiming saw the familiar back of a girl with a ponytail, making her way forward step by step with a white cane.

When he passed through this neighborhood on his way to work in the morning, Yu Zhiming would see this girl about one out of every three times.

But this was the first time he had ever encountered her on his way home from work in the evening.

This was largely because Yu Zhiming was relatively punctual in the morning, but his hours in the evening were completely unpredictable.

However, it was nearly eleven o’clock at night now. If the girl with the ponytail always came back this late, they really wouldn’t have run into each other if Yu Zhiming hadn’t happened to be busy today.

He pedaled his bike slowly, following gently behind the girl.

After about ten meters, Yu Zhiming saw the girl stop. She moved closer to the wall, half-turned, and a face wearing sunglasses looked in his direction.

Yu Zhiming understood. She was letting him go past first.

He gave the pedals a couple of hard pushes, but just as he was about to pass the girl, he stopped his bike and dismounted.

"Don’t worry, I’m not a bad person..."

The pretty girl revealed a faint smile and said, "I know. We’re old acquaintances."

"We see each other often in the mornings. I’ve gotten used to the sound of your bicycle."

"Why are you getting off work so late today?"

Yu Zhiming pushed his bike and walked slowly alongside the girl with the ponytail, like they were old friends.

"It was a bit busy at the hospital today."

He then introduced himself. "I’m a doctor. My name is Yu Zhiming."

The girl with the ponytail introduced herself as well. "Hello, Dr. Yu. My name is Luo Qing. The ’Luo’ as in Luo Binwang."

"You sound very young, and you work at the prestigious Huashan Hospital. You must be a young prodigy."

Yu Zhiming chuckled lightly. "Not quite a prodigy, more like an average talent."

After a moment’s pause, he asked, "If you don’t mind me asking, were your eyes like this from birth, or did it happen later?"

Luo Qing’s expression didn’t change as she said, "It was caused by an accident when I was eleven. The doctors said my optic nerve was damaged."

This answer was a great disappointment to Yu Zhiming.

The optic nerve is part of the central nervous system, and it’s extremely difficult for it to recover after being injured.

At that moment, the two of them reached the fork in the road where their paths diverged.

Still unwilling to give up, Yu Zhiming said, "Luo Qing, do you still have your medical records at home? Mainly the imaging scans."

"Um, I could help... Hmm, I know a few medical experts at the hospital. I could ask them to take a look for you."

Luo Qing turned to face Yu Zhiming directly and said softly, "The scans, I do still have them."

"Dr. Yu, should I bring them to you tomorrow morning?"

Yu Zhiming replied, "Okay," then added, "I’m just having them take a look. The chance of a breakthrough is probably very small."

Luo Qing smiled gently and sighed. "I know the hope is slim."

At this, Luo Qing let out a soft breath.

"But to be honest, Dr. Yu, I’ve always held out hope for a miracle that would let me see again."

"It’s like buying a lottery ticket. Even though I know I don’t have that kind of fate or luck, I still extravagantly hope that destiny will smile on me, so I always buy a few tickets, just in case."

Yu Zhiming could really understand Luo Qing’s mindset.

During the days when he himself was blind, he had fantasized more than once about waking up and seeing the light.

Fortunately for him, Yu Zhiming’s fantasy had come true.

"You really do have to have hope, no matter how unrealistic or slim it is. What if it actually comes true?"

Yu Zhiming agreed, then continued, "I will... ask the medical experts to study your scans carefully."

Luo Qing bowed slightly. "Dr. Yu, thank you. I can feel that you’re not pitying me; you genuinely want to help me."

"Tomorrow morning, then? See you then?"

"See you then!"

Yu Zhiming watched Luo Qing turn and walk into a small alley, then he got on his bicycle and sped away...

When he returned to his place in the Zijin Garden District, he saw that Fourth Sister and Gu Qingning were still up, both playing on their phones.

After Yu Zhiming washed up and came out of the bathroom, he was surprised to see Gu Qingning emerge from the kitchen with a bowl of noodles with greens and shrimp.

"You ran off halfway through dinner and were busy for half the night. You must be exhausted and starving. Have a bowl of noodles."

Gu Qingning then said, showing off a little, "I’m not much of a cook, but I’m pretty decent at making noodles."

"You’ll know once you taste it."

Gu Qingning placed the noodles on the dining table and noticed Yu Zhiming staring at her. She raised a hand to touch her face.

"Is there something on my face?"

Yu Zhiming shook his head. "No! It’s just that you’ve suddenly become so much like a virtuous wife and loving mother, I’m having a little trouble adjusting."

"I just had to make sure your twin sister didn’t replace you."

Gu Qingning snorted. "I’m just living under your roof, so I have to put on a good show."

"Hurry up and eat..."

Gu Qingning went back to the kitchen and brought out another bowl of noodles. Seeing Yu Zhiming slurping them down eagerly, her heart filled with joy.

"How is it? Tastes pretty good, right?"

"Mhm, it’s great."

Yu Zhiming replied casually. When he looked up, he saw Gu Qingning had sat down next to him with a bowl of noodles of her own.

Before Yu Zhiming could ask, Gu Qingning explained, "A horse doesn’t get fat without a midnight snack. I need to get a bit more... curvy."
