Chapter 108: Chapter 107: Scene Reconstruction

Night gave way to day. Yu Zhiming opened his eyes, greeting a new morning.

He methodically went through his morning routine: getting up, washing his face, and doing his morning exercises before returning to his bedroom to study.

At 7:30 a.m., Yu Zhiming left his bedroom. Just as he sat down at the dining table for breakfast, an unexpected visitor arrived.

It was Jin Feng, an acquaintance from the local police station, accompanied by an unfamiliar, long-faced, middle-aged man with a serious expression.

Seeing the police, Yu Zhiming’s heart leaped into his throat.

"Is this still about the molestation case?"

Jin Feng shook his head. "No, we’re here to investigate yesterday evening’s tour bus accident."

Yu Zhiming relaxed and asked in confusion, "How can I help with the investigation?"

The long-faced man spoke up. "Dr. Yu, I’m Wei Hao from the municipal bureau, a member of the accident investigation team."

After a two-second pause, Wei Hao continued, "We’ve already determined that in yesterday’s accident, the tour bus was cut off by a G-Wagen that suddenly swerved into its lane."

"To avoid a collision, the bus driver jerked the steering wheel, lost control, and plunged headfirst off the overpass."

"Last night, the G-Wagen’s driver and its two passengers came to the station to turn themselves in."

Yu Zhiming let out an "oh," looking at the two officers with confusion.

Jin Feng continued, "Even though they turned themselves in, we still need to verify all the facts."

"We can’t just take their word for it."

Wei Hao said grimly, "Dr. Yu, I can tell you this much: the G-Wagen driver stated that when he suddenly swerved into the adjacent lane and cut off the bus, it wasn’t intentional."

"He claims it was because he was suddenly attacked by the male passenger, which caused him to panic."

Jin Feng added, "Dr. Yu, if it was intentional, it would be considered endangering public safety."

"With consequences this severe, a life sentence—or even the death penalty—is possible."

"But if it was unintentional or due to other factors, the final sentence would be drastically different."

Yu Zhiming nodded. "I still don’t see what this has to do with me."

"It’s like this, Dr. Yu..."

Wei Hao explained further, "We’ve obtained the dashcam data from the G-Wagen, but the in-cabin recording is audio only. There’s no video."

"We know you’re particularly sensitive to sound, Dr. Yu, and that you have the ability of echolocation."

"We were hoping you could use the audio from the dashcam to determine the physical movements of the three individuals and confirm whether a sudden conflict truly occurred as they claim."

’Hmm...’

Yu Zhiming considered it for a moment, then answered honestly, "I don’t know. I’ve never done anything like this before."

"But I can give it a try."

Then he asked, "Can you tell me the specific casualty figures from yesterday’s accident?"

Wei Hao fell silent for a moment before saying slowly, "Nine dead, twelve severely injured. Five of the severely injured are still in critical condition."

"Twenty-seven with minor injuries."

Yu Zhiming let out a long breath. "Forty-eight people... A total of forty-eight people."

"To get them justice, I’ll do everything I can to try and reconstruct what happened."

"But I’ll need a completely silent environment, and preferably, an identical G-Wagen."

Wei Hao nodded. "No problem. We’ll arrange it."

Yu Zhiming had another thought. "Even if I reconstruct what really happened, it can’t be used as concrete evidence, can it?"

Wei Hao said coolly, "Dr. Yu, we just need to know the truth. We don’t need you to come forward and testify."

"The truth is enough for us..."

Since Wei Hao still needed to make some preparations, they agreed that Yu Zhiming would attempt to analyze the audio after he got off work...

The moment Yu Zhiming arrived at Huashan Hospital, he was summoned into Qi Yue’s office.

But then, Qi Yue began to look Yu Zhiming up and down, over and over, without saying a word.

The scrutiny was making Yu Zhiming’s skin crawl.

"Teacher, did I do something wrong? Or is there something off about how I’m dressed today?"

Qi Yue snorted. "I never figured you for someone who’d achieved enlightenment and was ready to renounce the world."

"Did last night’s rescue effort affect you that much?"

Yu Zhiming was a little surprised.

’I can’t believe Teacher is so perceptive he could read so much into my reflection piece.’

He chuckled. "Teacher, it was my first time experiencing a scene like that and seeing firsthand how fickle fate can be. It’s normal to have some stray thoughts!"

"I’ve slept on it, and I’m not thinking that way anymore."

"Besides, I still have the great responsibility of continuing the Yu Family bloodline. If I dared to become a monk, my four older sisters would kill me."

Qi Yue snorted again. "It’s for the best. Still, I’m going to schedule a counseling session for you."

He sighed softly. "That accident yesterday... so many casualties. It was bound to have a major impact on you."

"And, Director Zhao told me..."

A faint smile appeared on Qi Yue’s face. "You did an excellent job last night. Truly outstanding."

"He said that if you hadn’t intervened, the death toll would have been at least three or four people higher."

Yu Zhiming said humbly, "That’s mainly because Director Zhao was so well-prepared. He had plenty of balloon catheters ready beforehand."

"It didn’t even occur to me that the catheters could be used that way."

Qi Yue smiled. "That’s where experience, expertise, and insight come in."

"Once you’ve seen and experienced more, you’ll naturally come up with proper solutions for unusual situations."

"For now, however, you can only be a tool for us to direct and use."

Yu Zhiming replied in a sycophantic tone, "It’s my great honor to be a tool for you and Director Zhao."

"An honor many people would fight for and still not get."

Qi Yue shook his head, laughing, and teased back, "Well, it’s our honor to have a tool like you."

With that, he picked up an agreement from his desk and tossed it to Yu Zhiming.

"This is the project agreement for the Waking Device, negotiated with Gu Qingran and Huayu Medical Technology."

"Take a look..."

Before Qi Yue could finish, the young man had already picked up a pen from the desk and signed his name on the signature line of the agreement’s final page.

"Any collaboration you negotiate won’t be a problem, Teacher. I can just sign it."

Qi Yue shot the young man an amused glare. "This is a draft copy, just for you to read."

"The official contract requires at least four signed copies, not just one."

Yu Zhiming gave a sheepish laugh and rolled the papers up in his hand...

The essay-like reflection Yu Zhiming had published did, in fact, cause a stir online.

After all, it was the first official online response from the much-discussed Yu Zhiming himself.

Some netizens detected the undercurrent of negativity in his post and concluded it was a result of the cyberbullying he had faced.

As a result, the discussion among many netizens shifted to topics opposing irresponsible keyboard warriors and cyberbullying.

At ten in the morning, Jingda Medical School issued a new announcement.

The notice stated that Professor Wen Keming had committed serious misrepresentation during the course of an investigation.

After review, the medical school had decided to suspend Professor Wen’s qualification to recruit graduate students for the year.

The announcement vaguely indicated that Professor Wen had made a mistake.

However, it didn’t explicitly state whether Professor Wen had intentionally failed Yu Zhiming in the past.

While this dissatisfied some netizens, the fact remained that Jingda Medical School had, after all, punished the party involved.

In a way, it served as an indirect explanation to Yu Zhiming and the public...

At three in the afternoon, prodded by Qi Yue, Yu Zhiming reluctantly went to the hospital’s mental health counseling center and spoke with a senior psychologist for an hour.

After the session, to be honest, Yu Zhiming didn’t feel particularly unburdened.

But he had to admit, the counseling office itself was incredibly comfortable.

Besides being exceptionally quiet, the decor was simple yet elegant, and the lighting was soft. Once he sank into the sofa, Yu Zhiming felt like he never wanted to get up...

At half-past six in the evening, Yu Zhiming left Huashan Hospital in a Volkswagen driven by Wei Hao...
