Chapter 755: Remnant Soul as a Boat

  • Next Chapter

In the pitch-black corridor, Junsheng did not take a single step back. He stood stubbornly in front of me, raising both hands to offer up the black spherical object he had always treasured.

"You're giving this to me?" I reached out to take it, but my fingers passed right through the object in Junsheng's hands. We clearly didn't belong to the same world; we could see each other, but we couldn't touch.

After my hand grasped empty air a few times, I finally stopped. 'The little guy must have a reason for doing this. This concerns the Old Granny's life, so he's definitely more anxious than I am.'

Junsheng held the same posture. I thought for a long time before a gleam flashed in my eyes, and I slowly drew the Embroidered Ball the Old Granny had given me from my coat.

'The Old Granny has lived for decades, and her mind is sharp. Did she anticipate that she might be dragged into this?' She had kept that Embroidered Ball for decades, and Junsheng held an Embroidered Ball in his hands now. This item, carrying all their memories and bridging across reincarnation, was incredibly precious to them—yet the Old Granny had handed hers over to me without a second thought.

'Was she afraid that if she was taken away, Junsheng would still go to that old house looking for the Embroidered Ball? Was she worried Junsheng would be ensnared by the obsession there, so she had no choice but to give it to me?' The old woman had been thinking of Junsheng right up to the very end. The story between the two of them was truly moving.

Seeing me take out the Embroidered Ball, the short, shadowy figure finally reacted. He stood on his tiptoes and lifted the black spherical object high, trying with all his might to bring the two Embroidered Balls together.

"What are you doing?" The black sphere in the boy's hands was something he had brought out from the other side of reincarnation. It belonged to his world, crystallized from memories and the past, while the Embroidered Ball the Old Granny had given me carried her longing and the present. Though they were technically the same object, they belonged to opposite shores of reincarnation. If they were rashly brought together, it would very likely trigger a massive disaster.

Reincarnation was not to be tampered with. This was only happening because he had met a Fate Usurper like me, someone who placed no stock in the will of heaven. Anyone else would absolutely refuse to try; the moment they saw the Copper Mirror, they would have abandoned all thoughts of saving her.

'A hidden force behind the scenes wants me to enter reincarnation, but reincarnation is filled with countless dangers. It's certain death!' I held the Embroidered Ball in front of my chest. Junsheng was always just a hair away from touching it. Looking at the little guy's desperate efforts, I genuinely didn't know if what I was doing was right.

'The same item from the past and the present touching each other violates the laws of heaven. A calamity will definitely strike; heaven will absolutely not sit idly by. The sheer danger of this is comparable to usurping fate.' Anyone who defied the will of heaven would be met with natural disasters and man-made calamities. I didn't know what form the natural disaster would take, but I could faintly guess the man-made one. Zhu Li's corpse hadn't been in the sixth-floor apartment. The artist who loved painting with human bodies was very likely hiding nearby. He had sent Bai Ya'er out ahead of time to plant a hidden pawn. If my consciousness entered reincarnation, my defenseless body would very likely be destroyed by him.

Junsheng and I couldn't communicate, nor could we touch each other. We could only guess at each other's intentions.

He wanted to save the Old Granny, even if it meant being ground to dust. I stared at him for a long time. Perhaps because I was wearing the Good and Evil Asura Mask, I remained unable to make a decision.

'I have always acted according to my heart and stuck to my own principles. It has nothing to do with right or wrong, good or evil; I simply strive for a clear conscience.' If I were a good person by society's standards, I naturally wouldn't have ended up in this situation. But if I were a purely bad person like Lu Xing, I definitely wouldn't have survived to this day, either.

I took off the Good and Evil Asura Mask and looked closely at Junsheng. This short, shadowy figure only possessed a single night's worth of memories, yet he stood stubbornly in front of me, refusing to bow his head. It was as if taking even a single step back would mean losing everything.

With no other choice and no way to retreat, he was in the exact same situation as I was. I looked at Junsheng, feeling a sudden tug at my heartstrings. "Alright. I can help you."

Forming a hand seal, I summoned the Fate Ghost, communicating with it and ordering it to stand guard.

Black hair swirled around it as I slowly adjusted the angle of my phone screen. When the cold light illuminated the Copper Mirror, the mottled glass once again reflected the images of Junsheng and me.

"If anyone approaches, kill them without mercy. Do not let them get close under any circumstances." Having weathered countless disasters by my side, the Fate Ghost had awakened its own intelligence. Hearing my command, it gave a slight nod to show it understood.

Within the Red Building, the Fate Ghost was the only entity I could trust. I could only rest easy with it guarding my body.

'That live show streamer told me to come find him here, and the Live Show also directed me to do my broadcast here. The deeper meaning behind their actions is very likely related to reincarnation. By going in, I'm playing right into their hands.' I shook my head; overthinking it now wouldn't change a thing. I wasn't the indecisive type. Once I made up my mind, I didn't back down.

I turned my palm downward, and the Embroidered Ball I got from the Old Granny slowly overlapped with the black sphere cupped in Junsheng's hands. The moment the two perfectly aligned, I suddenly realized something was wrong. A tremendous suction force erupted from the Embroidered Ball. The corridor was perfectly still, yet to me, it felt like a howling gale was tearing through. A force acted directly upon my soul, violently dragging my consciousness out of my body!

"Yin-Yang Has an Order!" I unleashed my ghost arts and Daoist spells, but it was completely useless. This was a power that entirely superseded the natural rules.

In my panic, I desperately activated every trump card and mystical artifact on my person. Only three items responded, enveloped by my consciousness and carried away with me.

"Junsheng! What are you doing?!"

I was caught entirely off guard. Things were playing out completely differently from how I had imagined. The instant the two Embroidered Balls merged, my consciousness uncontrollably slammed toward the short, shadowy figure, as if attempting to fuse with him as well!

I paled in shock and tried to resist, but it was as if Junsheng had anticipated this outcome all along. He spread his arms and actively welcomed the fusion. The very second my consciousness crashed into his body, he leaped high into the air, hurtling straight toward the ancient mirror overhead.

It happened too fast; I had absolutely no time to react. I could only use my consciousness to fiercely protect the three items I had brought out of my body. On the mottled ancient mirror, Junsheng's and my reflections slowly faded. The world spun violently. I could faintly hear a sorrowful singing voice. By the time I opened my eyes again, everything in my line of sight had changed.

Cyan and red bricks intertwined, coated in a fine layer of stone dust. The door lintel featured alum-red carvings, and a fairly new Copper Mirror rested atop the hanging beam.

All the grime and dust were gone. The mirror's surface rippled like water, reflecting the slightly dazed figure standing beneath it.

I looked up at the Copper Mirror. The person reflected in the glass was a young child, around seven or eight years old. His body was frail, and he wore a patched tunic. There were large holes in his shoes, yet his spine was ramrod straight, and his eyes were piercingly bright, giving him the distinct aura of an impoverished scholar.

"Junsheng?" I stared at myself in the mirror and subconsciously uttered the name. "How did I become him?"

The arms, the body, and the face in the mirror—everything confirmed that my consciousness had entered Junsheng's body.

'The two Embroidered Balls merged together. Objects from opposite shores of reincarnation touched—something entirely unprecedented. I doubt even Master Tianxin has ever heard of such a thing.' I looked around and realized that my Judging Eye had stopped working. My vision and hearing had been reduced to that of an ordinary person. I could no longer see through the darkness; I could only feel the endless, biting chill surrounding me.

'Is this the other side of reincarnation?' I stared up at the Copper Mirror on the lintel, a thousand thoughts racing through my mind. Only now did I truly understand Master Tianxin's warning. 'No wonder he left immediately after telling me that the living cannot enter reincarnation. He must have seen Junsheng. He leaked heaven's secrets to me so I could use Junsheng's body as a boat, ferrying my consciousness into the Other Shore of Reincarnation.'

Having figured that out, a new question arose. I had occupied Junsheng's body, so where did his consciousness go? Was my will like a honed blade, too overbearing and sharp, forcefully suppressing his mind somewhere deep within this body?

Looking inward revealed absolutely nothing. After trying for a while, I gave up. 'I'm in unfamiliar territory; it's better to play it safe.'

Without the Judging Eye, I could only see clearly within a three- or four-meter radius. Everything else was a pitch-black void, incredibly eerie.

'When the Embroidered Balls merged, I remember pulling three items over with my consciousness.' I raised my hands. In my left palm rested a Mirror Fragment, while my right hand was tightly clenched around a Black Jade Pixiu.

'Why these two things?' I had brought both the Mirror Fragment and the Black Jade Pixiu out from the Deep Dream Layer, but I never expected them to follow my consciousness into reincarnation. 'It makes sense for the Reincarnation Mirror Fragment to follow my mind here, but could this Black Jade Pixiu also be a hidden pawn planted by the Live Show?'

I couldn't figure it out, so I looked down at the third item...
