Chapter 472: Potential of a Fate Usurper
"If you can't endure it, your body dies and the Dao dissolves. But once you survive, you'll be a fish leaping over the dragon gate, and your destiny will be firmly in your own hands." Blind Liu's words seemed to hold a trace of profound mystery. He lowered his voice. "Do you know what it means when heaven wants you dead, yet you don't die?"
"What does it mean?" I had a faint sense that Blind Liu was about to tell me something incredibly important.
"It means you succeeded in usurping fate!"
"Usurping fate?!" My heart gave a jolt. I couldn't be more familiar with that term.
"Having jumped out of the River of Destiny, you possess the qualifications to become a Fate Usurper. Among those who dare to usurp fate, which of them isn't a madman playing chess against heaven itself?" A hint of awe laced Blind Liu's voice. "Of the three thousand Great Daos, Fate Usurpers walk the most perilous path. At the slightest misstep, their body dies and the Dao dissolves, turning them to ash. They treat heaven and earth as a cage and use their own bodies to shake the laws of nature. They are all lunatics! I wasn't going to tell you this, but I do see a trace of a Fate Usurper's potential in you. It's possible the Heavenly Dao sensed it too, which is why it struck first to nip the threat in the bud, fixing a date for your death!"
"I have the potential to be a Fate Usurper?" My expression shifted. I had never considered myself the same kind of person as the Two-Faced Buddha. "Didn't you tell me ages ago that I had the worst aptitude you'd seen in five hundred years? Why change your tune now? Being a Fate Usurper is no easy task."
"First Destiny, Second Luck, Third Feng Shui, fourth accumulating merit, fifth studying books. Cultivating destiny ranks number one, and those who meet the requirements are incredibly rare. Back when we first met, how could I have known a kid like you had such great capabilities?" The more Blind Liu spoke, the more convinced he became. "Your fate star is shrouded in fog, and the hexagrams cast for you have never been accurate. Every time you encounter a deadly snare of Nine Deaths and One Life, you manage to find that single thread of survival. Thinking about it now, it's highly suspicious."
"Let's talk about this Fate Usurper business after I survive today. I didn't call you here to listen to your brainwashing." I glanced left and right, paying attention to the slightest rustle in the wind, but didn't spot any danger. Instead, I noticed a crowd of onlookers staring at the odd duo of me and Blind Liu.
"There's a saying: the will of heaven is hard to defy. You either accept your fate, or you risk everything and fight back. No one else can help you." After saying this, Blind Liu took a step back. "Your current situation is incredibly dangerous. To say you are plagued by bad luck doesn't even begin to cover it. The slightest misstep will cost your life. Anyone staying near you could be dragged down and sent straight to the Yellow Springs. So don't blame this old priest for lacking loyalty. Farewell."
"You're leaving already?!" I wanted to say a few more words to keep him here, but Blind Liu's departure was decisive. Without even looking back, he broke into a jog and hurried away."Should I buy myself an insurance policy?" To be honest, I was giving it some very serious thought.
"Sir, are you unwell?" A hospital security guard had had his eye on me for a while. Seeing me looking so out of it, standing alone with a shoulder pole and two yellow Divine Talismans stuck to my suit, he had hesitated for a long time before finally walking over.
"You're the one who isn't unwell!" The retort slipped out before I realized how wrong it sounded. Gripping the shoulder pole, I prepared to hail a cab and leave.
"Sir, if you're sick, you need to go to the hospital for treatment. All that Taoist priest stuff is just feudal superstition. I heard everything he said to you just now, and he was just conning you! Whatever you do, don't fall for it. Don't joke around with your own life. If you miss the optimal window for treatment, it'll be too late for regrets!" The security guard was quite enthusiastic and dutiful, continually trying to persuade me.
"I'm not sick. Step aside." Not wanting to entangle myself further with the guard, I waved at the opposite side of the road. A taxi began pulling over toward me.
"You're so young, why would you believe in all those monsters and demons? Wake up! One look at that old priest and anyone can tell he isn't a decent person. He had a black cloth over his eyes, yet he dared to jog down the street—he's definitely faking being blind! I've explained it so clearly, how do you still not understand?" In the security guard's eyes, I had definitely been scammed. The bystanders around us were also pointing and whispering, feeling that my behavior was a bit abnormal.
Before I could say anything else, two electricians walked out of the hospital gates. One of them happened to be the guy I had seen in the restroom earlier. Carrying his toolbox, he spotted me arguing with the security guard and immediately ran over.
Before I could even figure out what he was trying to do, the guy grabbed the security guard's arm and whispered, "He's a psycho! I saw him with my own eyes, talking to himself in the restroom and writing on the mirrors and walls with water. Whatever you do, don't interact with him!"
As someone who cultivated the Profound Truth Dao, my five senses far exceeded those of ordinary people, so I naturally heard him loud and clear. My face instantly darkened. But I had no way to explain myself. I couldn't exactly tell them that I had adopted a ghost who couldn't speak, and dipping our fingers in water was the only way we could communicate, could I?
"Forget it. I'm not going to stoop to your level."
The taxi made a wide U-turn and stopped right in front of me. The driver rolled down his window and asked, "Where to?"
I gave him the address. Just as I was about to get in, a sharp crack rang out in my palm!
"What's going on?" I looked down at Blind Liu's Ancestral Shoulder Pole. A highly conspicuous new crack had appeared on it. "A warning? I can't take this car?"
A great figure had emerged from the ancestors of the Liu family, so I had a lot of trust in Blind Liu's Ancestral Shoulder Pole. I immediately shut the car door. "Sorry, I'm not taking the ride."
"Not taking it? I made a huge U-turn to get over here, are you messing with me?" The driver was extremely impatient, feeling that I was costing him money.
"Driver, seeing as I was once saved by another veteran driver, I'll give you a piece of advice. Get out of the car right now, and absolutely do not take any more fares today." I spoke with complete sincerity, afraid that under the influence of the will of heaven, he would be dragged down with me.
"Are you sick in the head? If you're not getting in, step aside. You're wasting my gas."
His attitude was incredibly unfriendly. I curled my lip, but on second thought, this was a living, breathing human life after all. I gripped the car door and refused to let go. "I'm telling you one last time. Leave this car immediately, or your life will be in danger."
"Do we have some kind of grudge? Cursing me to have an accident for no reason?!" The driver rolled up his sleeves, the flesh on his face bunching up. It looked like he was ready to step out and beat me up.
"Calm down, calm down." Seeing the situation escalating, the security guard hurriedly ran over and muttered to the driver, "He's a patient. There's something wrong with his brain. Don't stoop to his level."
With the security guard holding him back, the driver cursed his rotten luck, started the taxi, and prepared to drive off.
The security guard offered the driver an apologetic smile, then walked over to me with a stern face. "Sir, you're taking this a bit too far. Do you have any family? I can help you contact them to take you home."
"You actually think I'm sick?" I tilted my head to look at the guard and let out a soft sigh. "You meant well, but you did a bad thing. If my guess is right, that driver is absolutely going to get into an accident on the road!"
"Yes, yes, yes, you're right. Now, can you tell me your family's contact info?" The security guard looked completely dismissive, yanking on my arm and refusing to let go. The crowd of onlookers was growing larger, and some pedestrians were even pulling out their phones to take pictures of me.
"You fools!" Gripping the shoulder pole, I completely ignored the gawking bystanders. I activated my Judging Eye, staring dead at the taxi. "Heaven wants me dead, so it shouldn't harm the innocent. Perhaps because I didn't get in the car, that driver won't get into an accident either."
"Heaven wants you dead? You really are seriously ill." The electrician recalled the scene he had witnessed in the hospital restroom, feeling a wave of lingering fear. "Isn't it dangerous for a psychopath to run around everywhere? It would be safer to call the police."
I shook off the security guard's arm, my eyes fixed firmly on the taxi. To be honest, I was also very curious to see exactly how the will of heaven intended to kill me this time.
The driver drove off with a taut face. As he approached the intersection next to the hospital, the green light happened to have only a few seconds left. Since he was already in a bad mood, he slammed on the gas, planning to speed right through.
However, around the corner, a three-wheeled auto rickshaw saw that its red light was about to end and started moving early.
The two vehicles spotted each other simultaneously at the turn. The taxi driver slammed on the brakes just in time for the auto rickshaw to scrape past his front bumper.
The taxi driver rolled down his window, just about to unleash a torrent of curses, when the entire car suddenly gave a violent jolt.
"Crash!"
Following close behind the taxi was a moving company's box truck packed full of furniture. The truck driver had intended to follow the taxi through the light, but when the taxi braked so suddenly, he couldn't react in time and smashed right into its rear end.
What made my scalp tingle even more was that a wooden wardrobe tied to the very top of the truck somehow burst its ropes. Carried forward by the momentum of the crash, it smashed straight down into the taxi's backseat.
Glass shattered everywhere. A corner of the wardrobe wedged deeply into the taxi—right in the exact spot where I had been planning to sit!
Several sharp gasps sounded beside me. The security guard loosened his numb grip on my arm, pointing dumbly at the taxi, while the electrician stared at me with his mouth wide open. The look in his eyes was like he was looking at a monster from a horror story.
