Chapter 405: Two Letters
The light from the phone illuminated the ceiling. With the sound of the door closing, the hallway plunged into dead silence.
The middle-aged man clutched a golf club, his back pressed against the wall as he scanned his surroundings. His eyes darted back and forth, and his palms sweated. It took a long time before he finally moved to pick up his phone.
"Stupid bitch, making a fuss over nothing. I'll teach you a lesson once I get the lights on."
I could hear his heartbeat clearly even from a distance. He was putting on a brave face, but he was actually more terrified than the woman.
"The gods watch from above; the wicked seal their own doom." I stroked the second jade bead, and Tian Teng's fat body appeared behind me. Back in the Adult Shop, Tian Teng hadn't lost any ground against Leng Qingxuan's Butcher. A Filthy Ghost's combat power was far greater than a Seductive Ghost's.
Summoning two ghosts at the same time doubled my Yin energy consumption. I stopped toying with the couple in the room and set my plan in motion.
The middle-aged man gathered his courage and groped his way to the breaker box. He breathed a sigh of relief and was about to flip the switch when his outstretched hand brushed against something. It was cold, and felt exactly like human skin.
He yanked his hand back as if he'd been shocked and aimed his phone's flashlight at the spot. There was absolutely nothing on the breaker box.
"False alarm." But before he could even catch his breath, something slid across the back of his neck. It was icy, like the scales of a venomous snake.
"Who is it!" He swung the golf club fiercely behind him but hit nothing. Only the sound of rushing wind reached his ears.He stood frozen, looking around. It felt like something extra was lurking in the pitch-black hall. Before he could turn his head, a sharp pain shot across the back of his hand, and he instinctively dropped his phone.
The screen flashed as the phone hit the floor. A moment later, the light vanished, plunging the massive manor entirely into darkness.
"Is anyone there? I'm the acting chairman of the Li Group, Li Changgui's son, Li Chunqiang! Whatever you want, we can sit down and talk!" he yelled, crouching down to feel for his phone. He groped around the floor for a long time but couldn't find it.
"So you still remember that you're Li Changgui's son?" I was standing not far from him, my foot resting on his phone.
"Who said that?!" Li Chunqiang swung the golf club wildly, like a cornered beast.
Of course, I wasn't stupid enough to expose myself. I commanded the Filthy Ghost to knock Li Chunqiang down.
A Lesser Vehicle ghost already possessed the ability to harm the living. Since Li Chunqiang hardly seemed like a good person, I didn't tell the Filthy Ghost to hold back.
A chilling wind blew. Li Chunqiang's legs trembled. The manor's breaker box was right in front of him, yet those few short steps felt like an uncrossable chasm.
'There's a ghost in the house?' As soon as the thought formed, it wrapped around his heart like a poisonous vine, strangling him until he couldn't breathe.
In the darkness, he looked toward the bedroom where Li Changgui's portrait was kept. His facial muscles twitched. Disregarding the woman hiding in the room, he moved toward the door alone.
"Trying to run?" I pointed at him and waved a hand at the Filthy Ghost.
The chilling wind howled, and an invisible force in the darkness knocked Li Chunqiang over. He slumped to the floor, shouting and swinging his golf club like a rabid dog.
He propped himself up with one hand and frantically crawled toward the door. He was a very cunning man. He pretended to be completely terrified and out of his mind, but his escape route hadn't actually changed; he had merely slowed down.
I stayed silent to avoid giving away my position, letting the Filthy Ghost continue to teach him a lesson. I didn't walk toward him until he was nearing the doorway.
Li Chunqiang was absolutely terrified, but his will to survive was incredibly strong. He dragged himself to within three or four meters of the door before suddenly freezing.
The fingers supporting his body brushed against something on the floor. He looked down, but because the room was so dim, he had to press his face almost directly against it before he could see clearly.
They were a woman's feet—very delicate and beautiful.
He looked up along her calves, tilting his head back ninety degrees, only to find himself face-to-face with the woman standing in front of him.
It was such a familiar face. The owner of this face had courted his favor countless times in the past, hoping he would help her escape her sea of suffering, but he had ignored her every time.
After Li Changgui's death, he had even given the woman a generous payoff, all to cover up the real cause of the old man's demise.
"Wang Yuchun? Why are you here? Didn't I give you money and tell you never to come back?" His brief confusion was swiftly replaced by terror, because her familiar face was deathly pale and cold, devoid of any sign of life.
"Get lost!" Terror flooded his body, twisting into hysterical madness. He gripped the golf club and repeatedly smashed it at the woman in front of him, but it was as if they existed in entirely different worlds.
The club bent as it slammed against the floor. The familiar, charming woman smiled brightly as a flower, lunging through the darkness to bite him.
"Impossible! Absolutely impossible!" Every hair on Li Chunqiang's body stood on end. He already had a guilty conscience, and in that moment, his inner terror was magnified a thousand times over. He let out a hoarse, cracked shriek, and then he did something I never expected.
Throwing aside the golf club, he launched himself at the hall window like a sprinter in a hundred-meter dash.
Glass shards exploded in every direction. Li Chunqiang tumbled to the ground outside, covered in blood. Howling wildly, he scrambled to his feet and ran away from the manor.
He probably hadn't run that fast in half his life. By the time I thought to chase after him, he had already reached the manor's main gates.
"Was it really that terrifying?" I didn't bother going after Li Chunqiang. Since he had smashed the window to escape, it wouldn't be long before he brought people back to search the place. I didn't have much time left.
With the two ghosts clearing the way, I headed deep into the hallway, took out the Skeleton Key, and unlocked the room where the woman was hiding.
The bedroom's decor was incredibly luxurious. Most of the furniture was handcrafted, especially the massive bed in the center of the room, which could easily fit four or five people.
The night wind ruffled the curtains. The window was half-open, but unfortunately for her, security bars were installed outside. The woman had nowhere to run.
"Where did you hide?" I tilted my head, inspecting the room. It was a rare chance to experience a scene straight out of a horror movie, even if I was the one playing the evil spirit.
I opened the wardrobe, which was stuffed with barely worn designer clothes, and then bent down to check under the bed.
Our eyes met. The woman's shriek echoed through the manor; she sounded like a sparrow about to be tossed into a boiling pot.
"The will." I had the Filthy Ghost drag the woman out, then spoke in an even hoarser, disguised voice. "Give me my will!"
The woman was scared witless. It took her a long time to understand what I was saying. Trembling, she walked out of the bedroom and led me to a study.
Perhaps because it involved her fundamental interests, she stopped in front of the study's safe and hesitated. Her greed was actually beginning to slowly overcome her fear.
She turned her head to look at me by the doorway. But since the room was pitch-black, she could only sense that someone was there without being able to see my face.
"The will! Give it to me!"
The chilling wind blew past. It was like standing in the freezing winter rain wearing nothing but thin clothes. She shivered, crouched in front of the safe, and entered the password.
She typed very slowly, pausing for a long time on every single digit. I used my Judging Eye to memorize the numbers she input, then commanded the Seductive Ghost to sit on top of the safe.
As two slender legs dangled and swayed gently beside her, the woman let out another shriek. Gritting her teeth, she finished entering the digits and pulled an urn out of the safe.
This urn had been placed right between stacks of cash and Gold Bricks, showing just how important it was.
I didn't go over to take it myself. Instead, I made the woman place it at the doorway and had the Seductive Ghost watch her while I opened the urn out in the hall.
The space inside the urn was quite large, but it only contained two simple letters.
The first letter had been written five years ago. The gist of it was that Li Changgui felt his health was deteriorating and wanted to handle his affairs ahead of time. It contained detailed instructions for dividing his assets. To my surprise, Li Changgui clearly stated in the letter that he was willing to donate sixty percent of his total assets to medical causes, establish a charitable foundation, and help society search for missing children.
The envelope also contained a certificate issued by the Xinhu Notary Office, which meant he hadn't just written this casually; he had genuinely intended to do it.
A brutal old man who had lost his abilities in a certain area and enjoyed abusing others actually possessed such an unknown side. Human nature really was a complex thing.
I made no judgments about Li Changgui. I tucked the first letter away and opened the second one.
The second letter had no signature and no date, but the handwriting was exactly the same as the first.
