Super Soldier in the City
Chapter 2789 - 2851: Daughter of a Wealthy Family
For Zhang Bai, this was an opportunity, one of the biggest opportunities in his life, because the document clearly stated that Wu Shuwei was unmarried, and it was said that she didn’t even have a boyfriend. Moreover, her resume... was quite impressive, half a page filled with the companies and positions Wu Shuwei had held over the years, along with the deals she had signed. These elements demonstrated one thing: Wu Shuwei had strong personal capabilities. Indeed, her father’s influence might have helped, but Zhang Bai wasn’t foolish; he knew personal ability was essential to accomplish such feats.
This proved one thing... Wu Shuwei was not just a pretty face; on the contrary, she was a career woman, and an exceptionally attractive one at that. The materials indicated that Wu Shuwei was a notable socialite in Capital City, though not as famous as some others, but that was due to her modesty and commitment to work!
"Phew! Opportunities, this is a tremendous opportunity!" Zhang Bai tapped his phone screen, having reviewed Wu Shuwei’s details twice in half an hour, to the extent that he didn’t even bother to look at the information on Li Yifei, since he was searching for a woman like Wu Shuwei—strong family background, not just a pretty face, and notably attractive.
Since Zhang Bai himself was good-looking, he didn’t want to settle for an average-looking woman. Of course, if he was just playing around, he could find plenty of beautiful women, but the one at home couldn’t be too unattractive. A woman like Wu Shuwei was truly to his liking.
However, the challenge was also significant; a woman like Wu Shuwei couldn’t be won over that easily. It required tremendous efforts, or else someone would have won her over already.
"Tsk, how could such a woman live with that Country Bumpkin? Could they have known each other before? It’s possible. But the previous incident was quite a coincidence; Xiang Ba was a bit arrogant in his actions, which is a pity I arrived late. Otherwise, I could have shown some dominance too." Zhang Bai muttered to himself, lighting a cigarette. As he took a slow puff, the smoke seemed to outline Wu Shuwei’s image, prompting Zhang Bai to squint his eyes and begin plotting how to meet Wu Shuwei and win her heart. In this regard, Zhang Bai was somewhat confident. The data collected suggested that money and power wouldn’t sway a woman like Wu Shuwei; only something else could... perhaps sincerity!
Many young people might think that to find true love in society, one must first have money, enough to satisfy the demands of love. But Zhang Bai had surpassed this phase, feeling that fostering an emotion—specifically, love—is paramount, the emotion sparked upon meeting Wu Shuwei, particularly because Wu Shuwei wasn’t just a pretty face; she was a successful woman with profound thoughts and high cultural standards. Ordinary tricks would be useless on her, so only sincerity would do.
This emotion stemmed genuinely from the heart, without any pretense, and Zhang Bai was now set to cultivate it.
He ended up forgetting to look at Li Yifei’s information again. Now it seemed unimportant, but who knew what it might lead him to.
Li Yifei helped Wu Shuwei with her luggage, taking charge of delivering it upstairs. He still didn’t receive any pleasant expression, so he only raised his eyebrow slightly and, feeling somewhat embarrassed, went downstairs, back to his room, where he sorted out his clothes, hanging some and stowing others neatly. Some personal items were also arranged tidily. He might not be frequently staying here, but it still needed to look presentable.
Actually, Li Yifei felt a bit bored. Tomorrow was the official start of classes; he arrived today, and since everyone was unfamiliar, it seemed like there was nowhere to go. Of course, Li Yifei could wander around campus and maybe meet a few classmates, but the crux was that Wu Shuwei was upstairs, and leaving her alone didn’t seem proper.
He felt a bit awkward since he hadn’t seen her for months, and she had seemingly returned to her previous aloof demeanor, ignoring him entirely, even deliberately distancing herself from him—that made Li Yifei uncomfortable. If she didn’t want to be too close, she didn’t need to step in to save the situation today; in the end, it would just be Li Yifei retaliating against the other party. He was on the right side, certainly wouldn’t give up the villa, and Wu Shuwei letting go of her villa made Li Yifei feel slightly guilty, so he dutifully stayed downstairs without occupying the other room upstairs.
Rubbing his chin, Li Yifei’s expression grew peculiar. He could clearly sense Wu Shuwei upstairs—if he wanted, he could hear her breathing, perceive her presence, even know some of her movements. However, he refrained, thinking she would naturally come down if she wanted to, no need to sneak around.
Should he play hero saving beauty? After reminiscing about past attempts, he realized it might really have required such intervening to evoke her memories, to make the atmosphere less awkward.
Thinking of playing hero, Li Yifei laughed mischievously, acknowledging his slight unscrupulousness. He should wish for better outcomes, not Wu Shuwei encountering danger again.
Upstairs, Wu Shuwei’s expression wasn’t pleasant—not due to physical discomfort but emotional. She even pouted for a while, displaying a cute and feminine side, upset clearly at Li Yifei, wondering how a man smiling like a cunning businessman could act this way. Despite her unease, she had openly agreed to share a villa with him in front of everyone. Wasn’t that hint clear enough? What more could she do? Given her personality, such a hint was already very obvious.
Wu Shuwei wouldn’t be more explicit, yet this man stayed so calm, not coming to find her, not even saying nice things to her.
Li Yifei misunderstood, thinking Wu Shuwei had returned to her old self. In reality, she indeed had partially reverted, but she couldn’t forget Li Yifei. This encounter reopened Wu Shuwei’s heart, making her recall many past events, especially in the last one or two hours, reminiscent scenes spun rapidly in her mind like a movie—moments of facing danger survived together in adversity. Those were unforgettable experiences for life, shared between her and Li Yifei.
"Shared experiences," these five words were indelibly etched in Wu Shuwei’s mind.
After waiting for a while, seeing Li Yifei hadn’t come upstairs, Wu Shuwei contemplated rolling her eyes, making faces—anyway, no one else would see. She even muttered softly, "What a heartless man, a flirtatious one, truly unreliable!"
After a few seconds, she sighed again, saying, "Well, with so many beautiful wives at home, how could he think of me? Wake up, Wu Shuwei, he’s probably forgotten about you. Yet here you are, foolishly staying at the same villa with him. You better move out quickly before rumors spread."
After hesitating for a bit, Wu Shuwei appeared annoyed, saying, "Or maybe give him one more chance. If he doesn’t come up within five minutes saying a bunch of nice things, I’d better pretend I don’t know him."
Five minutes passed, Wu Shuwei turned over, sprawling on the bed, staring blankly at the ceiling light, and after a moment, she exhaled deeply, sighing, "Ugh, I already gave you a chance!"
Wu Shuwei forgot that earlier when Li Yifei tried to start conversations, she had responded coldly, leaving him unsure of how to proceed. Of course, during moments like these, a woman might not be reasonable; even a sophisticated beauty like Wu Shuwei wasn’t exempt from falling into the norm. During this solitary time, Wu Shuwei attributed the current situation between them to Li Yifei’s various missteps, believing those led to the present predicament.
Had there been a camera capturing Li Yifei and Wu Shuwei simultaneously at this moment, it could have shown both their actions, expressions, facial nuances through windows, revealing that Li Yifei waited as well. In this private space within the villa, one might wonder if Wu Shuwei would drop the recent ’facade’ to see him.
Thus, the two awkward individuals remained at a standstill for over two hours. It was already past three o’clock in the afternoon when Li Yifei couldn’t hold up, taking a nap and waking to find that time had flown by, meanwhile hearing the doorbell. Li Yifei in slippers went out, opening the door to see a staff member holding a large platter of fruit at the door.
"Hello... Mr. Li, right? These are fruits prepared by the school for you. If you eat them, you can call this number, and we’ll deliver more." The staff member said.
"Oh, oh, thank you! It’s really considerate, sending so much fruit!" Li Yifei quickly replied, remembering Wu Shuwei upstairs, who liked fruits.
"You’re welcome. Any fruits you’d like to eat are available, as long as they’re purchasable. This expense will be deducted from your tuition!" The staff responded.
"That’s okay, but thanks for your hard work." Li Yifei accepted the fruit, and the staff turned away.
The fruit basket contained a variety of fruits, some were seasonal, while others were warehouse-stored. Li Yifei took them inside, washed a platter of fruits in the kitchen, making them look water-fresh and appetizing. He then went upstairs, calling from a distance, "Shuwei, freshly delivered fruits, washed up, bringing them to you."
"Shuwei?" Li Yifei waited a few seconds but heard no response, so he popped a fruit into his mouth, chewed a few bites, relishing the sweetness, and reached the door, knocking only to find Wu Shuwei’s room door locked from within.
"No way..." Li Yifei’s expression appeared exaggerated. In this house, just the two of them, Wu Shuwei’s locking the door from inside clearly meant she was guarding against him.
