Super Rich by Doing as You Please
Chapter 723: What, You Think My Daughter Isn't Good Enough for You?
“What’s the condition?”
“For the investment and construction project on the peninsula, your government must give me its absolute support on the policy side. I can’t get bogged down in red tape and corruption with all the various procedures.”
Xu Yun said, “Otherwise, I’m out.”
“That’s not a problem. I can guarantee it.”
The city leader said with some concern, “It’s just the funding… Are you sure you won’t have any problems? Your previous old district renovation project still requires a two-billion-yuan investment.”
“That’s not something you need to worry about, sir.”
Xu Yun smiled. “I don’t have any other special skills. I just happen to have a *bit* of money.”
“Alright, then we have a deal. You can start making arrangements, and I’ll go back and hold a standing committee meeting to get this project finalized.”
Seeing that his objective was met, the city leader said with a smile, “On behalf of the government, I welcome this investment from President Xu.”
“From now on, when I see you, sir, I’ll be sure to keep my distance.”
Xu Yun shook his head. “Otherwise, at this rate, you’re going to completely drain what little family fortune I have.”
“Young man, you need to think more long-term.”
The city leader chuckled. “Your initial investment might seem huge now, but later on, as the biggest landowner in Jiangnan District, your various returns will be substantial. Who knows, it might just make you the richest man in Jiangcheng overnight.”
“I have no interest in making money.”
Xu Yun pursed his lips. “Next time you have such a great opportunity, please, sir, go find someone else.”
“Huaimin was right. You’re a slick kid, but you’re a good person.”
The city leader laughed. “He really lucked out, finding a great son-in-law like you. Talk about a blind squirrel finding a nut.”
“I never said I was his son-in-law.”
Xu Yun retorted, “Don’t believe him. He was definitely just bragging to you.”
“Is that so?”
The city leader teased, “I have a daughter, about the same age as you, and she’s not bad-looking. How about it? You want to be my son-in-law?”
Xu Yun was stunned for a moment, then said, “Never mind. I think I’ll just be his son-in-law after all.”
“What, you think my daughter isn’t good enough for you?”
“It’s I who am not good enough for your esteemed daughter.”
Xu Yun shook his head. “What if one of your political rivals loses their mind and slaps us with a label of government-business collusion? We’d be finished.”
“I suppose that makes sense.”
The city leader chuckled. “Alright, I’ll stop chatting with you. Go have a good talk with the principal. You’re the man of the hour at the school now, an honored guest.”
Xu Yun was speechless.
‘This is what 1.5 billion gets you!’
After the city leader left, the principal returned right on cue, as if he had a security camera installed in the office.
‘However, he didn’t think the principal had the guts to do that.’
‘It wasn’t because he himself was so formidable, but because the city leader was.’
The two of them briefly discussed the follow-up matters regarding the donation. Then, the principal asked for Xu Yun’s personal information, since his name would be appearing on the wall of distinguished alumni.
Regarding this, Xu Yun simply stated that he was in the investment industry. As for specific company information, he brushed it off with a “not at liberty to disclose.”
If Xu Yun had said this before meeting the city leader, the principal definitely wouldn’t have let it slide.
But now, after seeing the city leader’s attitude towards him, he had already begun to suspect that Xu Yun was no ordinary person.
‘He might even be the young master of one of the big families from up top.’
‘Coincidentally, among the 18 great families, there was one with the surname Xu whose ancestral home was from this area.’
So, he didn’t press the matter further.
When the time came, he would just write some basic information for Xu Yun on the distinguished alumni wall. That was the gist of it.
After finishing his talk with the principal, Xu Yun left the academic building, ready to head back.
But who would have known that he would be stopped by a group of people after just a few steps?
He took a closer look. ‘Well, what do you know. Weren’t these the distinguished alumni the school had invited back today?’
Xu Yun asked with a smile, “Gentlemen, how can I help you?”
“President Xu, let’s get acquainted.”
Everyone politely handed him their business cards, saying, “We’ve come back to the school so many times, but this is the first we’ve heard that our alma mater has produced such an outstanding young talent.”
Even though he looked young, not yet 30, a person who could donate 1.5 billion in one go and be treated with such respect by a ministerial-level leader from the provincial capital was worth them lowering their stances and extending an olive branch to befriend him.
As the saying goes, more friends mean more opportunities. Plus, they were all fellow alumni. What if they had a chance to cooperate in the future?
Or what if he could help them out?
“You’re too kind, gentlemen. How could I possibly compare to you all?”
Xu Yun said self-deprecatingly, “I’m just a bit luckier than most, with a tiny bit of success.”
“President Xu, you’re joking.”
The group said, “Actually, we’re planning a dinner gathering tonight for everyone to get together. No leaders, no bosses, just seniors and a junior. We were wondering if you’d like to join us, President Xu?”
“I’m terribly sorry, seniors.”
Xu Yun said apologetically, “I already have plans with someone tonight. How about another time? We can get together when there’s another chance, my treat. I have your contact information now anyway. We’ll have plenty of time in the future.”
“Alright, then.”
Disappointment showed on their faces. They said, “Since you have something to do, junior, we won’t insist. But if you have time to visit our cities in the future, you must give us a call and let us play the part of good hosts.”
“No problem. I’m the kind of person who loves a free meal.”
Xu Yun said, “Just don’t get tired of me when the time comes, seniors.”
“Of course not, of course not! We’d be thrilled to have you.”
After chatting for a few more moments, the two parties went their separate ways.
Xu Yun glanced at a text message on his phone, then drove to Yang Siqi’s company to prepare for the big event tonight.
