She couldn’t guarantee whether the client would be willing, of course.

Hearing her say that, they were all sharp enough to read between the lines. It was clear that getting a follow-up would be difficult.

Just as everyone was about to continue trying to persuade Jian Shiwai, a senior manager from the regional branch suddenly approached from a distance.

Seeing her, the various sub-branch governors quickly called out, "President Dong."

A middle-aged woman smiled and said, "A whole group of grown men, ganging up on a single woman like this."

"President Dong, you must be joking."

They looked a little awkward at her words. "We were just sharing our experiences with Vice Governor Jian."

"In that case, mind if I cut in? I’d also like a word with Vice Governor Jian."

"Of course, President Dong. Please, go ahead."

The crowd immediately dispersed.

With a senior manager from the regional branch stepping in for her, they couldn’t very well keep pressuring her to agree right then and there.

After all, she was a manager at the regional branch—the second-in-command, in charge of both human resources and the savings division.

Offending a superior like that was simply asking for trouble with your career.

Jian Shiwai shot a grateful glance at the senior manager who had come to her rescue. "Thank you, President Dong," she said with a smile.

"Sometimes, you have to learn to say no when it comes to work. Don’t feel bad about it."

The middle-aged woman, Dong Hongping, said, "That wasn’t them asking for business opportunities. They might as well have been openly trying to steal your client."

"No, no, it wasn’t like that."

Jian Shiwai didn’t just agree with her superior. Instead, she came to their defense. "The current business climate is tough, so it’s perfectly normal for everyone to be under pressure. I understand completely.

If our branch hadn’t gotten lucky this year, we’d probably be in the same boat, worrying just like them."

"You’re a kind one."

Dong Hongping smiled and asked, "The main reason I came over was to get your thoughts on something. Would you be interested in transferring to the regional branch after the New Year?"

"Aren’t I a bit underqualified?"

"Technically, your years of service and seniority are a slight issue, but..."

Dong Hongping’s tone shifted. "However, Headquarters has been emphasizing the need to rejuvenate our ranks by promoting capable young people. I think you’d be a perfect fit.

I’ll bring it up at the next leadership meeting. I doubt anyone will have any objections."

"President Dong, if this is an official personnel appointment, then I’ll follow the arrangement."

Jian Shiwai smiled. "But if you’re asking for my personal preference, could I take some time to think about it before I give you an answer?"

"Of course. Just let me know once you’ve made up your mind."

Dong Hongping added a friendly reminder, "But, Vice Governor Jian, even though your position at the regional branch might not be as high, and you might not have as much authority...

...you’re still young. The regional branch is a better training ground, a better platform. It will give you a higher starting point and a higher ceiling for your career."

"I understand. Thank you for thinking so highly of me, President Dong."

"My appreciation alone wouldn’t be enough. It’s your own capability and your results that matter."

Dong Hongping smiled. "Thanks to your sub-branch, our General Manager was brimming with confidence at yesterday’s meeting at the Capital Headquarters. Even our Chairman said he never expected Jiangcheng to be hiding such a big fish."

Jian Shiwai was baffled.

’A four-billion-yuan client might be a huge deal locally, enough to get the regional branch’s full attention,’ she thought. ’But on a national scale, it’s not enough to catch the eye of the Chairman of the Board at Headquarters. That just doesn’t make sense.’

Seeing the confused look on her face, Dong Hongping asked, "What’s wrong? You don’t know?"

"Know what?"

Dong Hongping replied, "The General Manager called today. He said the balance in that local tycoon’s personal account has already surpassed ten billion.

I didn’t announce it at the meeting today, though. I didn’t want the other branches to find out and start getting ideas.

The General Manager also instructed me to let you know. We need to see when the client is available. After the GM gets back from his report at Headquarters, he wants to pay him a personal visit to thank him for his trust and support in our bank."

Jian Shiwai was utterly floored.

’Xu Yun’s personal account... has more than ten billion in it?’

’Why didn’t I know about this?!’

Jian Shiwai subconsciously glanced into the distance at Governor Gao, who was laughing and chatting animatedly with some of his peers. Her expression darkened.

’After all, besides him, there was no one else who could have kept this from me for so long.’
