Chapter 1468: Chapter 1458: Making Mistakes

"Mm, okay!" The doctor had no idea how he’d managed to offend this little girl Mengmeng. He watched her lower her head in silence, feeling a bit embarrassed himself. Jiang Cheng had finally given him a way out, so he immediately went off to handle the procedures for patient Li Juan’s physical examination.

It wasn’t long, not even half an hour later, when the ambulance pulled up at the hospital entrance.

Jiang Cheng followed behind the patient’s gurney and rushed straight to the doors of the operating room, completely ignoring the enthusiastic hospital director waiting at the emergency center, and just ran in with Li Juan toward the operating room.

Because Li Juan was about to be taken into surgery, her and Director Liang’s son couldn’t go in with his mom. Mengmeng had no choice but to hold him and slowly walk to the operating room door.

By the time Mengmeng slowly carried the two?year?old over to the operating room waiting area, the red "In Surgery" sign outside the operating room had already lit up.

"Brother Jiang Cheng, what’s the situation inside now?" Mengmeng looked at Jiang Cheng and asked.

Jiang Cheng straightened up a little and took Director Liang and Li Juan’s child from Mengmeng’s arms, then slowly sat back down on the chair in the operating room waiting area reserved for family. He answered slowly, "I had the hospital open a special green VIP channel. That red ’In Surgery’ light is on, but they actually haven’t started operating yet. They’re using the most advanced equipment to run tests first."

"Testing for what? Didn’t they see Li Juan already passed out? Why aren’t they doing emergency treatment?" Mengmeng asked, a bit flustered. Jiang Cheng raised an eyebrow and patiently explained to her, "On the way here, based on the monitor readings and the doctors’ examination, there’s no bleeding in Li Juan’s body or her skull. So her collapse has nothing to do with hemorrhaging."

"So what then? Brother Jiang Cheng, keep going!" Mengmeng realized she’d interrupted him and saw Jiang Cheng looking at her with a hint of displeasure, so she said timidly.

Jiang Cheng copied Dong Ran’s signature gesture, curling his lip as he said, "So, before emergency procedures, we have to first figure out the cause of Li Juan’s illness. Otherwise, even if Hua Tuo were alive today, that old Hua Tuo wouldn’t know what to do either."

Half comprehending, Mengmeng nodded. After all, everyone has their own field of expertise. She worked in computers—how could she be expected to understand medical theory?

The "tick?tock, tick?tock" sound from the clock drifted over as time passed, minute by minute.

Finally, after more than twenty minutes, the doctor the hospital had assigned specifically to examine Li Juan "creak" — pushed the door open and came out of the operating room.

"Doctor, what’s the situation inside now? How is patient Li Juan?" Jiang Cheng, holding Li Juan’s child, wasn’t in a position to get up easily, so Mengmeng immediately ran forward to ask.

The doctor adjusted the glasses above his blue surgical mask and slowly said, "The patient’s collapse isn’t due to external trauma. It should have been triggered by a certain kind of emotional stimulus."

Hearing the doctor’s answer, Mengmeng cheered and said, "Oh... that’s good. As long as it’s not something major! Their kid is only two, still so little. His dad ended up like that, half dead in prison. If his mom has something happen too, how is this child supposed to live?"

Jiang Cheng noticed the doctor still looked like he had more to say, his brows tightly knitted, and sensed that something else was wrong. He gently handed the child back to Mengmeng, then turned to the doctor and asked, "Doctor, if it were purely emotional shock, her lips wouldn’t be turning purple. And with all this time gone by and CPR already done, she wouldn’t still be unconscious. If you have something to say, just say it straight. What exactly is going on with Li Juan?"

"The patient is already in the late stage of gastric cancer. The value of further treatment is minimal. You’d best be mentally prepared." The doctor spoke slowly.

At this news, Mengmeng’s body trembled and she froze on the spot. Jiang Cheng also just stood there, rooted, unable to react for a long moment.

Mengmeng turned around, her voice shaking as she said to Jiang Cheng, "President Jiang, what should we do? The child is still so little..." Jiang Cheng shook his head; his mind was a complete mess at that point, like a heavy stone was pressing down on him.

Right then, as if sensing something, Li Juan’s child started crying again. His little body shook violently, and he cried harder and harder, as if he understood he was about to lose his mother.

He cried until his voice turned hoarse, tears streaming down like beads off a broken string, completely out of control. Sweat and tears mixed together and rolled down his cheeks.

Mengmeng thought of how the child’s father was still in prison, his life or death unknown, and now his mother had stomach cancer and the doctor had already said there was no hope of treatment. Her heart ached unbearably.

Such a cute yet pitiful child—what kind of sins had he committed to have to bear things no child his age should have to endure!

The more Mengmeng thought about it, the more her heart hurt. Even though she wasn’t a mother yet, she could still empathize, because there was a maternal glow in her heart too. After thinking it over, Mengmeng decided to take the child back to her place for the time being.

Keep him close to her, take care of him herself—maybe that would make her own heart feel a bit better too. But at midnight, which is prime time for a child to open up their vocal cords, Jiang Juan’s child was no exception.

The child kept wailing nonstop, with no signs of calming down. His crying even startled the birds outside the window. All at once, the crows in the trees were awakened; with flapping wings, a whole flock took off. Also awakened were Jiang Cheng and Mengmeng.

Jiang Cheng was already exhausted from everything that had happened during the day and had wanted to finally get some proper rest. But he just couldn’t take it anymore. He yelled at the child, "Cry, cry, cry—crying all day long. What are you crying for?"

The child’s emotions were unstable to begin with, and now the man in front of him was shouting at him again, so he only cried harder, as if using his crying to vent his discontent. Hearing the child cry even louder, Jiang Cheng grew more and more irritable, a nameless anger rising in him with nowhere to go.

Seeing this, Mengmeng immediately tried to soothe them: "Baby, baby, let’s stop crying, okay?" Jiang Cheng heard Mengmeng comforting the child and turned his head away dismissively, trying to show just how annoyed he was.

"President Jiang, don’t be mad. The child isn’t doing it on purpose. You know he doesn’t have his parents and lacks a sense of security." Mengmeng tried to calm Jiang Cheng down as she spoke. Jiang Cheng blinked, looked at Mengmeng, then at the child.

He replied, "Why is this kid always crying? Are we not allowed to sleep? He’s really driving me crazy!" "Haha, all little kids are like that. Didn’t you cry and fuss when you were little? He just misses his mom." Mengmeng said with a laugh.

Seeing Mengmeng laugh, the child also started laughing. One adult, one child, big eyes staring into little eyes—you smile at me, I smile at you—and in the end the two of them burst out laughing together. Watching the child laugh like a little angel, a softness rose in Jiang Cheng’s eyes.

Jiang Cheng scratched his own hair, like a child who knew he’d done something wrong, grunted an "Mm" and stayed by Mengmeng’s side.

Gradually, maybe because he’d cried himself out, the child calmed down under Mengmeng’s soothing and soon, still sniffling, drifted off to sleep. Looking at the peacefully sleeping child, Jiang Cheng felt a sharp pain in his heart—part heartache, part pity.

Such a tiny child, and already he’s lost his father’s love and his mother. Growing up without his parents’ guidance, how is a child like that supposed to face the world in the future?
