Sunblind Serpent: The Zodiac Without A House
Chapter 120: The Vacant Keeper
The black lines at the edge of Rhovan’s wound tightened when Sareth moved.
Marek felt the pull beneath his palm before he saw it. The cut itself was deep, but it was still only an injury. The thin black lines clinging to it were something else, and they leaned toward Sareth’s shadow whenever it stretched across the road.
"Marek." Rhovan’s voice came out tighter than usual. "Do not take the wound."
Marek looked at him without answering.
Rhovan caught the look and glanced down at the blood soaking through his coat. "Right. You know."
"I do."
"Good. I would prefer to keep that part of myself."
"Then, stop moving."
Dario reached them before Rhovan could answer. Marek shifted aside just enough to guide his hands over the wound.
"Hold pressure here. If the black lines spread into the skin around the wound, tell me immediately. Don’t use your Authority on them."
Dario’s eyes dropped to the black marks at the edge of the torn cloth before returning to Marek. "Go."
Marek stood and faced Sareth.
Several meters away, Sareth had already recovered. His shadow reached toward the shelter again, but Rafe called out the movement before it could get far. Kellan forced Sareth aside, and Eren pushed the spreading route away from the entrance before it could reach anyone inside.
They were not strong enough to bring a Cycle VIII Astrant down, but they did not need to. They only needed to keep him occupied long enough for Marek to understand what he was looking at.
At some point, all six of them had started trusting that he would.
None of them had planned to stay this long. They had already helped Marek find his sister and his mother, even though none of them had been obligated to do either. They could have left after that, and nobody would have blamed them.
Well, Rhovan might.
But despite all that, they stayed.
Part of it was practical. Walking away from Rhovan, who knew more about the Prime Continuum than anyone they had met, and Marek, who kept finding answers to problems none of them understood, would have been a terrible decision while Earth was still changing around them.
But that was no longer the only reason.
Sareth had dragged things out of them that none of the six had expected the others to see. Memories they would rather have kept buried, accusations that had followed some of them long before Day 367, and choices that were much harder to explain once somebody removed the context.
Nobody had turned away. Nobody had looked at Dario, Nadia, Kellan, Silas, Eren, or Rafe afterward and decided Sareth’s version was enough.
They had covered for one another without being asked.
Maybe that was why none of them hesitated when Marek needed them to hold the line a little longer.
Another black line scraped across the road ahead of Marek before Kellan forced Sareth back again. Marek barely followed the exchange. His attention had already returned to what Sareth had shown them.
None of it had been fake. The old hall had existed. The memories he showed the six had happened, and the traces he followed to Earth had been left by real people and real events. Sareth’s Scorpius Authority had allowed him to find those traces.
Black Errancy was what allowed him to keep them open long after the events themselves were over.
Sareth had done the rest himself.
Whenever he found something people had buried or ignored, he refused to let it stay buried. At first, maybe that had only meant making sure the truth was seen. But somewhere along the way, he had started treating that responsibility as ownership.
If nobody else would carry a truth, Sareth would. If everyone else moved on, he would keep dragging it back into the present.
That was what connected every route he had used against them.
Marek opened a Case.
Marek did not try to contain Sareth himself. He also left out the old hall, Rhovan’s wound, and the memories Sareth had already exposed.
Those things were real.
What Marek targeted was the claim tying all of them back to Sareth. It was the idea that because he had found those truths, he had the right to keep them open forever.
[SUBJECT: SARETH VENN.]
[CONDITION: FALSE PERMANENT OWNERSHIP.]
[SOURCE: SARETH VENN.]
[ROUTE: UNCLOSED WITNESS CONNECTIONS.]
[CASE BOUNDARY ACCEPTED.]
[RECOGNITION ONLY.]
[NO INTAKE ROUTE OPEN.]
Marek understood it more easily than the words made it sound. Sareth was the subject, but Sareth himself was not what Marek needed to contain. Neither were the truths he had uncovered.
The problem was what Sareth had done with them.
He had witnessed things other people ignored, buried, or abandoned. Black Errancy kept those connections from closing, but Sareth had gone a step further.
Because he was the one still carrying those truths, he had started treating them as his to keep.
That claim was the condition.
The black witness-lines were only the routes keeping it attached to everything he had refused to let go.
Pain tightened across Marek’s shoulder as the boundary settled.
Sareth noticed and sent his shadow toward the nearest broken window, splitting it when that route failed. Marek registered both changes, but neither changed what he had placed inside the Case. Degree IV allowed him to hold the same definition even while Sareth kept changing the routes around it.
"You think defining it changes what happened?" Sareth asked.
"No."
"Then you understand nothing."
Marek kept the boundary steady. "I understand what belongs to you and what doesn’t."
A black line cut across the road.
Rafe shouted from behind Marek, but he was already moving. The line passed beside his leg and struck the remains of a concrete barrier. Another followed before the first had stopped spreading, forcing Marek farther from Dario and Rhovan.
He kept the Case narrow.
Holding it there was harder than opening it had been.
There were plenty of things Marek could have pulled into the Case. The memories Sareth had exposed were still fresh inside the shelter. The black lines remained along the edges of Rhovan’s wound, and the two occupied gray Scales beneath Marek’s Mark reacted to the same familiar pressure.
Marek left all of them alone.
The two gray Scales already held their own Cases.
Then a third, empty Scale began to ache.
Marek understood what it wanted before the interface gave him anything else. The Case needed custody, but if he took the truths and memories Sareth had claimed as his own, Marek would only be replacing Sareth’s ownership with his own, as though those truths had to belong to whoever held them.
So he accepted Sareth’s false ownership over them instead.
The third Scale responded immediately, but Marek kept it closed until he was sure the boundary hadn’t changed. Sareth remained the subject. The truths remained outside the Case. The only thing allowed through was the ownership Sareth had forced over them.
[VESSEL ACCEPTANCE: ESTABLISHED.]
Marek deliberately opened the third Scale to the condition he had defined. The route formed immediately, but he kept the boundary narrow enough that nothing else could cross with it.
The ache in Marek’s shoulder sharpened as a thin gray line appeared inside the empty Scale. It spread slowly while the pressure surrounding Sareth pulled toward the route Marek had opened, separating from the memories and traces it had been holding onto.
The gray continued spreading through the third Scale as Sareth’s false ownership separated from the truths it had attached itself to. Marek held the boundary until nothing else was trying to cross with it.
Only then did the Scale close.
The false ownership was now under his custody.
Gray settled across the third Scale, and the connections around Sareth became easier to distinguish.
They had never been one enormous truth.
Every event still came from somewhere else. Every memory remained part of the life that had produced it. Some belonged to people who could still speak for themselves. Others had ended long before Sareth found them. None of those differences created a natural line declaring him their permanent owner.
Sareth’s expression shifted. "You cannot keep what has no owner."
Marek breathed through the pressure beneath his Mark. "I’m not trying to."
Sareth paused, and something about the silence finally made the title Rhovan had told Marek weeks ago feel different.
Vacant Keeper.
