Summoner of Nightmares

Chapter 64: The Dark Manuscript

  • Next Chapter

The summoning room had become Gene’s favorite place to think.

Not because it was peaceful.

Far from it.

Half the room contained artifacts that could potentially end civilizations.

The other half contained artifacts that Gene had forgotten were dangerous.

Which somehow felt worse.

Still, it was quiet.

The large puzzle box sat inside its containment field.

The Collector’s Disc rested nearby.

The Archivist’s Grimoire remained open on a table.

And Gene sat at a desk with a notebook.

A very normal notebook.

A rare thing in his life.

He tapped the pencil against the page.

Then began writing.

⸻

The Dark Chapel had been growing.

At first it had been little more than a joke.

A strange idea.

A horror-themed religion created to give Mother Sarah and the other nuns something meaningful to do.

Now?

Now it was becoming a real part of Mystic Blood Valley.

People were curious.

Some of the townsfolk had already started visiting the church.

Several merchants had attended services.

A few travelers had stopped by to listen.

Gene wasn’t entirely sure how he felt about being responsible for a religion.

The idea was mildly terrifying.

Still…

If it was going to exist, then he wanted it to be something worthwhile.

So he wrote.

Peace.

Kindness.

Compassion.

Acceptance.

The understanding that appearances could be deceiving.

The belief that creatures of darkness were not automatically evil.

That monsters deserved to be judged by their actions rather than their appearance.

That fear could be overcome.

That knowledge should be pursued.

That family mattered.

That mercy should be offered whenever possible.

That even those who had fallen into darkness deserved a chance to rise again.

Gene leaned back.

It wasn’t perfect.

But it felt honest.

It felt like something he actually believed.

The Caretaker.

Lilith.

Mother Sarah.

Jesse Belle.

Every single one of them looked terrifying.

Every single one of them had become family.

Gene smiled.

“Good enough.”

The summoning machine hummed.

A few minutes later a massive black book appeared.

It landed with enough force to shake the room.

BOOM.

Gene nearly fell out of his chair.

“Okay.”

He stared.

The book was enormous.

Nearly four feet tall.

Its cover appeared to be made from strange black leather.

Silver runes moved across its surface.

The pages glowed faintly.

Athena immediately began scanning it.

NEW ITEM DETECTED.

ANALYZING.

Gene waited.

Several seconds passed.

Then:

ITEM IDENTIFIED.

THE DARK MANUSCRIPT.

Gene grinned.

That was exactly what he had hoped it would be called.

The cover slowly opened by itself.

The pages flipped.

Words began appearing.

Not printed.

Written.

As if an invisible hand was actively recording the contents.

Gene’s ideas.

His beliefs.

The principles he had written down.

Everything flowed into the manuscript.

The process took nearly five minutes.

Then the book snapped shut.

A pulse of black light rippled outward.

The Dark Chapel had officially gained a holy text.

Gene wasn’t entirely sure how he felt about that.

⸻

His attention shifted toward the puzzle box.

The strange cube sat silently inside its containment chamber.

Waiting.

Patient.

Watching.

Or at least it felt like it was watching.

Gene crossed his arms.

“Athena.”

YES?

“I want a deeper scan.”

The AI paused.

CAN I REFUSE?

“Absolutely not.”

FINE

OF COURSE NOONE SEEMS TO LISTENS TO AI THESE DAYS.

Athena sounded resigned.

The Collector’s Disc activated.

Its black surface unfolded.

Blue energy scanned the puzzle box.

The room filled with warning alarms almost immediately.

Gene sighed.

“That can’t be good.”

IT IS NOT.

The scan continued.

Reality itself seemed to distort slightly.

The air rippled.

The walls stretched.

For half a second Gene could have sworn the room was upside down.

Then everything snapped back.

The scan completed.

The Collector’s Disc glowed.

A new entry appeared.

Gene’s eyes widened.

⸻

Gene stared.

Then stared some more.

Then quietly slid the box farther away.

“Nope.”

Athena agreed.

WE CAN ALWAYS BURY IT.

The Collector’s Disc updated again.

A new category appeared.

Forbidden Artifacts

The Puzzle Box immediately occupied the first slot.

Gene rubbed his face.

“I accidentally created a nightmare even I wouldn’t use.”

Athena paused.

THIS DESCRIPTION APPLIES TO APPROXIMATELY SEVENTY-TWO PERCENT OF YOUR CREATIONS.

“…Fair point.”

⸻

Gene considered the information carefully.

The item was useful.

Dangerous.

Extremely dangerous.

Potentially catastrophic.

Which made it perfect.

For someone else.

Specifically the cult.

The thought slowly formed.

A cult-controlled world.

An unstable cursed artifact.

Chaos.

Madness.

Monsters.

The possibilities were endless.

Gene smiled.

Then immediately stopped smiling.

“Actually let’s save that idea for later.”

The last thing he needed was accidentally creating another apocalypse.

⸻

Before leaving the facility he added several protections that only he would know about.

Athena integrated them immediately.

All of the main people of the hotel received immunity protocols.

Any insanity effects generated by the Puzzle Box would automatically fail.

The artifact was then placed into:

  • Triple containment.
  • Magical suppression fields.
  • Reality anchors.
  • Physical locks.
  • Tamper-proof storage.

The final container resembled a vault inside another vault.

Athena seemed pleased.

CONTAINMENT SUCCESSFUL.

Gene nodded.

“Let’s keep it that way.”

⸻

A short while later Gene headed toward the church.

The Dark Chapel had undergone noticeable changes.

The building looked larger.

Darker.

More impressive.

Black stone towers reached skyward.

Colorful stained-glass windows depicted monsters protecting children.

The symbolism made Gene smile.

That had been intentional.

Monsters weren’t always villains.

Sometimes they were guardians.

Sometimes they were heroes.

Sometimes they were family.

The chapel doors opened.

Mother Sarah stood waiting.

Behind her were the three newer nuns.

All four immediately noticed the manuscript.

The reaction was immediate.

The younger nuns froze.

One gasped.

Another dropped to one knee.

The tallest nun actually bowed.

Gene blinked.

“…Wow.”

Mother Sarah carefully accepted the massive book.

The moment her hands touched it—

The runes glowed.

The church itself seemed to react.

Dark energy flowed through the walls.

Candles ignited.

Shadows danced.

The younger nuns looked awestruck.

One whispered:

“This Manuscript…”

Another crossed herself.

The tallest simply stared.

Gene suddenly felt like he had accidentally started an actual religion.

Which technically he had.

Mother Sarah opened the book.

The pages flipped automatically.

Then words appeared.

A message.

The entire church fell silent.

DARK CHAPEL UPGRADE AVAILABLE

Requirements:

Two Nuns Minimum

Compatible Members Required

Gene blinked.

“Huh.”

Mother Sarah adjusted her glasses.

“It appears we can use information in this to evolve.”

The younger nuns looked excited.

The tall nun looked concerned.

Gene rubbed his chin.

“Before we start fusing people together…”

Everyone looked toward him.

“…you nuns still need names.”

Silence.

Mother Sarah blinked.

“Oh.”

The other nuns looked at each other.

Then looked embarrassed.

They had somehow forgotten they didn’t actually have names.

Gene stretched before sitting down.

“This might take a while.”

⸻

The voting process lasted almost two hours.

It was significantly more chaotic than expected.

One nun wanted something elegant.

Another wanted something intimidating.

The tall nun wanted something simple.

Mother Sarah acted as mediator.

Eventually names emerged.

The shortest nun chose:

Sister Abigail

A calm and thoughtful woman.

The second chose:

Sister Miriam

Known for her beauty and intelligence.

The tallest chose:

Sister Beatrice

A towering and imposing figure.

Mother Sarah remained Mother Sarah.

The group seemed pleased.

Gene applauded.

“Congratulations.”

The nuns smiled.

For the first time they felt less like summoned creatures.

And more like individuals.

Family.

Residents.

People.

⸻

The manuscript glowed once more.

The church lights dimmed.

The pages turned automatically.

A new message appeared.

UPGRADE CONDITIONS MET

Compatible Pair Located

Mother Sarah

+

Sister Beatrice

New Fusion Available

The church became completely silent.

Gene slowly looked up.

Mother Sarah looked calm.

Sister Beatrice looked nervous.

The other nuns looked excited.

The manuscript continued glowing.

Dark energy drifted through the room.

Outside, thunder rolled across the sky.

Athena’s voice echoed through Gene’s earpiece.

ENERGY LEVELS INCREASING.

Gene smiled.

Of course they were.

Nothing in his life could ever be normal.

Mother Sarah closed the manuscript.

Then turned toward Sister Beatrice.

The tall nun straightened.

Both women exchanged a look.

Determination.

Curiosity.

A little fear.

But mostly anticipation.

The future of the Dark Chapel was about to change.

And everyone in the room knew it.

Gene folded his arms.

“Well.”

The shadows deepened around the altar.

The manuscript pulsed.

The stained-glass windows glowed.

And as Mother Sarah and Sister Beatrice stepped toward the center of the chapel—

The first evolution of the Dark Chapel prepared to begin….
