Strongest Incubus System

Chapter 441: The Network Says No

  • Next Chapter

Damon kept staring at Caelum.

No answer.

That seemed to please him.

"Finally understood."

"No."

Caelum’s smile diminished slightly.

Damon pointed his sword at him.

"I understood that you believe that."

Aurelia took a deep breath.

"Caelum..."

He looked at her.

There was no hatred in his expression.

What there was was worse.

Familiarity.

"Aurelia."

"You knew I was alive."

"Naturally."

"And you never tried to remove me from suspension."

"You fulfilled a useful function."

She closed her eyes.

Damon let out a humorless laugh.

"There. Back to normal."

Caelum looked at him.

"You believe you know me because you disagree with what I did."

"No."

Damon tilted his head.

"I know your type because every son of a bitch who decides to turn people into tools ends up using the same excuses."

The black lines beneath the tower moved.

Ester stepped to Damon’s side.

Chen Mo did too.

Caelum did not even look at them.

"You restored Adaptation."

"Yes."

"Transfer."

"Yes."

"Dominion."

"Yes."

"Observation abandoned blind obedience."

"She seems to have developed common sense."

"You introduced Refusal where my Architects failed."

Damon became serious.

Caelum opened his arms.

"You removed the fragility."

Xue Lian understood first.

"That was what kept the artificial network from functioning."

Caelum looked at her.

"Not entirely."

"But it was the main flaw."

"Yes."

Aurelia lost color.

"The vessels broke."

"Some."

"Others rejected."

"Yes."

"And when you removed their ability to reject..."

Damon finished.

"The system had to force compatibility."

Caelum smiled.

"Not anymore."

Silence.

Aria gripped the plate more tightly.

Damon looked at him.

"You’re saying Refusal improves the system."

"No."

Caelum took another step.

"I’m saying it makes the system sustainable."

Damon did not like that.

Caelum continued.

"A bearer capable of refusal is more stable than a bearer who must be broken. A function capable of adapting paths without destroying its foundation is more efficient. Transfer between accepted routes loses less integrity. Dominion without an owner removes internal disputes."

Aurelia went still.

"You want to use all of it."

"Yes."

"Even without being able to possess."

Caelum looked at her.

"You remain trapped by the wrong word."

Damon narrowed his eyes.

"Then what’s the right one?"

"Necessity."

The black lines touched the first white line of the network.

It recoiled.

Caelum did not force it.

He simply waited.

"A network does not need to belong to me."

Another black line advanced.

"It needs to conclude it cannot function without me."

Damon felt something go cold in his chest.

Xue Lian noticed too.

"No."

Caelum smiled.

"Yes."

Aria’s plate erupted with messages.

The three cores still synchronized lit up at the same time.

They did not reveal names.

It no longer mattered.

The functions began to operate.

Far away.

Very far away.

The true network trembled.

Damon felt thousands of paths changing at once.

Not breaking.

Entering conflict.

Heshan.

Mirath.

Arven.

Regions he did not even know.

Flows trying to pass through the same routes.

Energy being redirected in incompatible directions.

Overlapping priorities.

Xue Lian went pale.

"He’s creating divergence."

Caelum nodded.

"Finally."

Damon raised his sword.

"You just created a problem so you could offer the solution afterward."

"That is an emotional description."

"It is an exact description."

The plate shone.

FUNCTIONAL CONFLICTS EXPANDING.

Dominion responded.

COORDINATION REQUIRED.

Damon lost his smile.

Caelum opened his arms.

"Look."

The black symbol of Central Authority appeared behind him.

"You defined the criterion yourself."

Damon went still.

Caelum spoke slowly.

"Preserve first that whose loss would close the greatest number of paths."

Dominion’s gold shone.

EXTERNAL COORDINATION AUTHORITY AVAILABLE.

Aurelia turned white.

"No."

Caelum looked at Damon.

"Your principle."

Another message appeared.

EVALUATING INTEGRATION.

Ester turned.

"Damon."

"I know."

"Do something."

"I’m trying to think."

"Faster."

"That never helps."

Caelum almost smiled.

"You cannot refuse on behalf of the network."

Damon remained quiet.

"No."

"You cannot order Dominion."

"No."

"You cannot destroy three distant functions before the collapse spreads."

"Probably not."

Xue Lian looked at him.

"Probably?"

"I’m trying to keep options open."

Caelum raised one hand.

The black lines advanced farther.

The true network began accepting them.

Not as domination.

As an emergency response.

CENTRAL INTEGRATION: 03%.

Aurelia lost her breath.

"It started."

Damon looked at the plate.

Observation.

"Present?"

PRESENT.

Caelum turned his head.

For the first time, genuinely attentive.

Damon noticed.

"You don’t like her."

"Observation has limited function."

"But it sees."

Silence.

Damon slowly smiled.

"Aria."

She understood before he finished.

"Observation. Origin of the current conflicts."

The plate vibrated.

Caelum raised one hand.

A black line shot forward.

Chen Mo stepped into its path.

He did not block it.

His void touched the connection.

The line disappeared.

It did not break.

It simply ceased to exist along that segment.

Caelum looked at him.

Finally.

"Interesting."

Chen Mo answered with his usual empty expression.

"No."

Damon smiled.

"He learned too."

The plate responded.

ANALYZING CAUSALITY.

CENTRAL INTEGRATION: 07%.

Xue Lian looked around.

"He’ll try to stop Observation."

"Then we stop him."

Ester drew her needles.

Caelum watched.

"Combat does not alter the outcome."

"Good," Damon replied. "Because I’m tired of solving everything by hitting it."

Ester looked at him.

"Lie."

"Deeply."

Caelum moved his hand.

Space around Aria folded.

Transfer responded immediately.

PATH NOT ACCEPTED.

Nothing happened.

Caelum went still.

Damon smiled.

"That one I fixed."

Another attempt.

Pressure fell over Xue Lian.

Adaptation reacted.

EXTERNAL OBJECTIVE ABSENT.

The pressure dissolved into dozens of paths that led nowhere.

Damon raised an eyebrow.

"That one too."

Caelum’s face finally lost its perfect serenity.

Barely.

"You believe you removed my tools."

"No."

Damon pointed at the network.

"I gave them back the possibility of not being yours."

The plate vibrated.

CAUSALITY IDENTIFIED.

Everyone looked.

Caelum too.

Aria read.

PRIMARY ORIGIN OF CONFLICTS: CENTRAL AUTHORITY.

Silence.

Dominion’s gold stopped.

CENTRAL INTEGRATION: 11%.

Stopped.

Caelum narrowed his eyes.

Damon smiled.

"Now we have the problem and the cause."

Dominion analyzed.

PROPOSED SOLUTION IS SOURCE OF CONFLICT.

Aurelia started laughing.

Quietly.

Almost in disbelief.

Caelum did not look at her.

PRIORITY REJECTED.

The black lines were expelled from the network.

All at once.

Caelum slid half a step backward.

Damon grinned.

"My principle."

For the first time, Caelum became irritated.

Not much.

But enough.

"Observation was supposed to record."

The plate answered on its own.

CORRECT.

"Not interpret."

CAUSALITY IS RECORD.

Aria covered her mouth with one hand.

Damon looked at her.

"Are you teaching sarcasm?"

"Wasn’t me."

"Concerning."

Caelum closed his hand.

The plate cracked.

Aria almost dropped it.

"Hey!"

Damon advanced.

Caelum pointed.

The world became heavy.

Not Dominion.

Something older.

Direct authority.

Damon fell to one knee.

Ester too.

Xue Mei lost her balance.

Aurelia hit the ground.

Chen Mo remained standing for another second.

Then fell.

Xue Lian was the only one who recognized it.

"Region."

Damon managed to look at her.

"What?"

She clenched her teeth.

"He is still a region."

Caelum approached.

The lines beneath his feet were not artificial.

They were white.

True.

Ancient.

Aurelia had warned them.

The true network had been forced to treat a person as territory.

Caelum was not commanding that pressure.

His body was releasing excess like a spiritual region.

"You corrected my functions," he said.

Another step.

"But you never corrected this."

Damon tried to stand.

Could not.

Caelum stopped in front of him.

"Because this is not artificial."

Silence.

Damon looked at the white lines crossing Caelum’s body.

And understood why the network did not reject him.

It recognized him.

Not as an owner.

As a place.

"Son of a bitch."

"Now you understand."

"A little."

Caelum raised his hand.

"The network cannot refuse a region for existing."

Xue Lian raised her face.

"But it can stop treating you as one."

Caelum turned.

Damon smiled.

"Thank you."

Xue Lian closed her eyes.

Caelum advanced immediately.

Ester tried to stand.

Could not.

Damon shouted.

"Chen!"

Chen Mo raised one hand.

Not toward Caelum.

Toward the ground.

His void touched a single white line.

It disappeared.

The pressure dropped for an instant.

Damon stood.

Caelum struck.

Damon blocked with his sword.

The impact went through his arms and threw him several meters backward.

He fell.

Rolled.

Stood.

"That hurt."

Ester shouted.

"Good!"

"Don’t start!"

Caelum advanced again.

Damon did not try to win.

He only dodged.

One strike.

Two.

Three.

Every movement Caelum made caused the network to respond as though mountains were being shifted.

Damon retreated.

Waited.

Bought seconds.

"Xue Lian!"

"I know!"

She was looking at the lines.

Not at Caelum.

At the definition.

Region.

Anchor.

Territory.

Continuity.

The same functional lie maintained for centuries.

Aurelia managed to sit up.

"It’s not enough to say he’s a person."

Xue Lian looked at her.

"I know."

"He accepted being a region."

"I know."

Damon dodged another strike.

"Can either of you know faster?!"

Caelum hit his chest.

Damon flew.

Ester tried to run.

He raised one hand from the ground.

"I’m fine."

"Lie!"

"Later!"

Caelum walked toward him.

"You keep looking for Refusal."

Damon spat blood.

"It works a lot."

"Not on me."

"Everyone says that."

Caelum stopped.

"I chose this."

Damon went still.

So did Aurelia.

Xue Lian closed her eyes.

There it was.

The problem.

Caelum had not been forced to become a region.

He had accepted it.

Refusal could not free someone from something they still chose.

Damon slowly stood.

"Then we’re not going to free you."

Caelum watched him.

Damon wiped the blood from his mouth.

"We’re going to free the network."

His expression changed.

Slightly.

But Damon saw it.

"Finally."

Caelum attacked.

Damon did not dodge.

Chen Mo erased the line beneath Caelum’s right foot.

The functional balance shifted.

Damon partially took the blow, grabbed his arm, and turned.

Caelum went through the stone floor.

The white surface exploded.

He stood almost immediately.

Damon was already backing away.

"Aria!"

"I’m searching!"

"For what?"

"The initial record!"

Caelum went still.

That confirmed it.

Damon smiled.

"Good."

Aria noticed.

"He doesn’t like that."

"Then keep going."

The plate was cracked, but Observation remained active.

"Observation. First record of Caelum as a region."

Pause.

Caelum vanished.

Damon barely saw him.

Ester did.

A needle struck Damon’s knee.

He fell.

Caelum’s blow passed over his head.

Damon looked at Ester.

"This is becoming a habit."

"Be grateful."

"I’m trying."

Caelum turned.

Xue Lian stepped between them.

No ice.

No authority.

Only herself.

Caelum stopped.

For an instant.

"Move."

"No."

"You no longer have the power to face me."

"I know."

"Then move."

"No."

Caelum looked at her.

Xue Lian held his gaze.

"You turned me into a region too."

Silence.

Damon went still.

Caelum did not answer.

"Not personally," she continued. "But it was your project. Your idea."

Her mother’s memory returned.

The blood.

The authority forced into a child.

"You decided people could be turned into points in the network."

Caelum remained silent.

"I spent centuries believing my power was part of me."

She breathed.

"Until I discovered it was only an imposed function."

Caelum answered.

"You survived because of it."

"Yes."

"Millions survived."

"Yes."

"Then it worked."

Xue Lian smiled.

Sadly.

"That was always your flaw."

"What?"

"You confuse functioning with being right."

The plate shone.

RECORD LOCATED.

Caelum turned.

Too late.

Aria read aloud.

"Caelum. Initial binding."

His face changed.

"Aria."

She continued.

"Previous classification..."

Silence.

Damon smiled.

"Say it."

Aria raised her eyes.

"Human."

The entire network trembled.

Caelum went still.

Aria continued.

"Later classification: Artificial Coordination Region."

Damon looked at the white lines.

"Artificial."

Aurelia slowly stood.

"Not the network."

"Him."

Xue Lian understood.

"Artificial transformation using a true function."

Damon smiled.

"Finally."

Caelum advanced.

Chen Mo placed both hands on the ground.

His void expanded.

Not over Caelum.

Over the relationship between him and the lines.

One.

Two.

Five.

Ten connections disappeared.

Caelum staggered.

Damon ran.

He did not attack the body.

His sword struck a white line on the ground.

It did not cut.

It marked.

"Observation!"

PRESENT.

"Is Caelum a natural region?"

Pause.

NO.

"Was he transformed?"

YES.

"Can he exist as a person without this classification?"

Caelum roared.

The first completely human expression he had shown.

"SHUT UP!"

Damon smiled.

"That seems to be the question."

The answer came.

YES.

Silence.

The true network reacted.

Not against Caelum.

In favor of the information.

The thousands of lines connected to him lit up.

CLASSIFICATION INCONSISTENT.

Caelum opened his arms.

"I accept."

The network hesitated.

Damon became serious.

Caelum smiled.

"You forgot."

The lines stabilized.

"I chose."

Aurelia closed her eyes.

Xue Lian did too.

Damon kept looking at him.

Then started laughing.

Caelum frowned.

"What?"

Damon shook his head.

"You still don’t understand Refusal."

"I do not refuse."

"I know."

Damon pointed at the network.

"But it can."

Silence.

Caelum went still.

Damon continued.

"Consent requires both sides when there is a bond."

Xue Lian opened her eyes.

Aurelia lost her breath.

Damon smiled.

"You accepted becoming a region."

The white network exploded with light.

"But no one asked whether the network still accepts carrying you."

Caelum finally lost all serenity.

"No."

Damon raised one hand.

Did not order.

Did not define.

Asked.

"Do you want to keep Caelum as a region?"

The entire world fell silent.

For one second.

Two.

Aria’s plate showed no message.

Dominion did not answer.

Adaptation did not answer.

Transfer remained silent.

The answer came from the true lines.

From thousands of paths.

A single word.

NO.

Caelum screamed.

All the connections broke at once.

They were not destroyed.

They withdrew.

Like roots leaving soil they no longer wanted to occupy.

Caelum fell to his knees.

The pressure disappeared.

Sector Zero’s black sky cracked.

The tower behind him trembled.

The three synchronized functions began to flicker.

CENTRAL AUTHORITY LOST.

CENTRAL AUTHORITY LOST.

CENTRAL AUTHORITY LOST.

Aurelia took a deep breath.

"It’s over."

Damon did not answer.

Because Caelum started laughing.

Quietly.

Tiredly.

Humanly.

He raised his head.

Without the network, he looked older.

Not centuries old.

But definitely not eternal.

"No."

Damon raised his sword.

"Of course not."

Caelum looked toward the tower.

"You removed my classification."

"Yes."

"My authority."

"Yes."

"My regional continuity."

"Yes."

Caelum smiled.

"But my body has already been reconstituted."

Damon became serious.

Caelum stood.

This time without thousands of lines.

Without the network.

Without Central Authority.

Only energy.

A lot of it.

Raw.

Accumulated over centuries.

The ground cracked beneath his feet.

Damon tightened his grip on the sword.

Caelum raised his hands.

"Then we finish this as men."

Damon looked at Ester.

Then Xue Lian.

Chen Mo.

Xue Mei.

Aurelia.

Aria.

All alive.

All there by their own choice.

He looked back at Caelum.

"No."

Caelum frowned.

Damon smiled.

"You finish as a man."

The sword rose.

"I brought friends."

Ester started laughing.

Xue Lian did too.

Caelum finally understood.

And the final battle of that volume began.
