Strongest Incubus System
Chapter 436: Teaching Dominion to Accept No
The first thing to disappear was the black line in Aurelia’s eyes.
It did not fade.
It moved.
It slid down through the golden iris, crossed the corner of her eye, and emerged beneath her skin as an extremely thin thread that began traveling across her face.
Aurelia grabbed her own chest.
Ester caught her before she fell.
"Pulse spiking."
Damon moved forward.
"Dominion is entering her?"
"No," Aurelia replied through clenched teeth. "It’s removing what I put into it."
Xue Lian became serious.
"What restriction exactly?"
Aurelia raised her eyes.
The gold was already visible beneath her skin.
"An impossibility."
Damon frowned.
"That explains nothing."
"Dominion was created to possess."
"You just said you kept it ownerless."
"Exactly."
Another wave passed through Aurelia.
She screamed.
The golden lines of the capsule responded and began connecting to her body.
Damon looked at the point on his arm.
The small mark was doing the same thing.
Two ends.
One function.
"You altered the definition."
Aurelia nodded with difficulty.
"Dominion needed a primary bearer to exist stably."
"You."
"Yes."
"But you didn’t want to become the owner."
"No."
Xue Lian understood.
"So you accepted being the bearer without accepting the authority."
Aurelia looked at her.
"You were always quick."
Xue Lian froze at the words.
Aurelia continued before she could ask.
"I didn’t destroy Dominion. I couldn’t. I also couldn’t give it to someone else. So I agreed to carry the reference."
Damon understood the rest.
"But you refused the function."
"I refused to be the owner."
Silence.
It was far too familiar.
Damon looked at Xue Lian.
She had noticed too.
Center without possession.
Bearer without authority.
Aurelia had reached something close to the same answer centuries earlier.
Only alone.
"That’s why you entered suspension," Damon said.
"Yes."
"As long as you continued to exist as the primary bearer, Dominion couldn’t choose another person."
"Yes."
"And as long as you refused to possess..."
"It would have no owner."
Damon exhaled.
"A living lock."
"I preferred ’restriction.’"
"Lock is shorter."
Aurelia almost smiled.
Then the gold crossed her neck.
The smile vanished.
RESTRICTION: REFUSAL OF POSSESSION.
Damon looked at the message.
"Very specific."
Another appeared.
ORIGIN: PRIMARY BEARER.
Then:
INCOMPATIBLE WITH ARCHITECT OBJECTIVE.
Aurelia laughed without humor.
"Of course it is."
Vorn, leaning against the wall, went still.
"Then the Architects knew."
Aurelia slowly turned her head.
"Knew what?"
"That you blocked Dominion."
"Eventually."
"And they left you here."
"No."
Vorn frowned.
Aurelia looked toward the open capsule.
"I put myself here."
Silence.
Damon raised an eyebrow.
"So it really was voluntary."
"I said so."
"I wanted to confirm. Ancient systems have a very creative interpretation of that word."
"It was my choice."
Xue Lian approached.
"Why?"
Aurelia looked at her for several seconds.
Then answered.
"Because killing the bearer did not destroy Dominion."
Damon became serious.
"It would choose another."
"Immediately."
"Then you couldn’t die."
"No."
"And you couldn’t remain awake."
Aurelia smiled weakly.
"I had enemies."
Damon looked around.
"I can imagine."
"If they captured me, they could try to force my acceptance."
"That’s why you went into suspension."
"A bearer alive enough to remain the reference, unconscious enough not to be coerced."
Damon let out a short laugh.
"That is annoyingly intelligent."
Vorn looked offended.
Aurelia looked at him.
"You’re still here?"
Damon started laughing.
"Please continue."
Vorn closed his eyes.
"I regret coming down here."
Ester was too busy to participate.
She pressed two needles into Aurelia’s chest.
"This is getting worse."
Damon returned to the subject.
"What exactly happens when the restriction is removed?"
Aurelia fell silent.
Damon did not like that.
"Aurelia."
"I’ve never seen it happen."
"Excellent."
Ester looked at him.
"No."
"That was involuntary."
Aurelia breathed with difficulty.
"If Dominion manages to remove my refusal from its own structure..."
Xue Lian finished.
"You become a valid bearer for possession again."
"Yes."
"Then it can force you to assume authority?"
"Not exactly."
Damon narrowed his eyes.
"What’s the worse part?"
Aurelia looked directly at him.
"It can use my position as primary bearer to authorize a successor."
Silence.
Everyone looked at Damon.
He lowered his eyes toward the golden point on his arm.
"Me."
"Yes."
"So recovering you wasn’t about using you."
"It was about removing the blockade."
Damon smiled without humor.
"I hate when ancient systems have reasonable plans."
The golden point pulsed.
PRIORITY SUCCESSOR: AVAILABLE.
"No," Damon replied immediately.
The message continued.
PRIMARY BEARER AUTHORIZATION PENDING.
Aurelia clenched her teeth.
"It needs me to authorize it."
Damon looked at her.
"Then it’s over."
"No."
"You’re not going to authorize it."
"I don’t intend to."
"Then it’s over."
Aurelia grabbed his arm.
Far too strongly for someone who could barely remain standing.
"It’s removing my ability to refuse."
Damon lost his smile.
Xue Lian froze.
"What?"
Aurelia looked at the golden lines climbing her own arm.
"My restriction wasn’t an order engraved into Dominion."
"It was you," Damon said.
"My decision."
Aurelia breathed with difficulty.
"Dominion doesn’t need to erase my memories. It only needs to separate that decision from the function."
Damon understood.
Just as the network had separated Adaptation from Vorn.
Dominion was doing the opposite.
Separating Aurelia’s refusal from itself.
"So you’ll still think you don’t want it."
"Yes."
"But it will stop having functional weight."
"Yes."
Damon became very quiet.
"Son of a bitch."
Ester looked at him.
"Damon."
"It deserved that."
Aurelia almost agreed.
The gold exploded.
She arched her body.
A white line emerged from her chest.
Not golden.
White.
Xue Lian’s eyes widened.
"The restriction."
The line tried to pull away from Aurelia.
Damon grabbed it.
The pain came immediately.
Not physical.
Conceptual.
A refusal that was not his passed through his mind.
I DO NOT POSSESS.
Damon lost his breath.
It was not a sentence.
It was a decision maintained for centuries.
Aurelia screamed.
"Let go!"
"No."
"It isn’t yours!"
"I know."
"Then let go!"
"That’s exactly why I can hold it."
Xue Lian understood.
The Fourth Door.
Damon knew how to distinguish an external decision from his own identity without needing to destroy it.
He looked at the white line wrapped around his hand.
"This is yours."
The line stabilized.
Dominion reacted.
UNAUTHORIZED INTERFERENCE.
Damon smiled.
"You’re inside my arm."
The gold intensified.
"Let’s not argue about authorization."
The white line tried to escape again.
Damon held it.
He did not absorb it.
He did not accept it as his own.
He merely stopped it from being discarded.
Aurelia looked at him.
"You can separate it."
"I’ve had practice."
Xue Lian approached.
"But you can’t hold that indefinitely."
"I know."
Damon looked at Aurelia.
"Then we give it back."
"Dominion will remove it again."
"Not if we put it somewhere else."
She frowned.
"Where else?"
Damon looked at the capsule.
Then at the tree above.
Then at the white lines of the original network still passing through the structure.
His smile returned.
Xue Lian saw it.
"You’re thinking about removing the restriction from the bearer."
"Yes."
"And turning it into a function of the network."
"Exactly."
Aurelia went still.
"No."
Damon looked at her.
"Why?"
"My refusal doesn’t belong to the network."
"Correct."
"Then you can’t simply insert it."
"Also correct."
"Then why are you smiling?"
"Because we don’t need to insert your decision."
Damon raised the white line.
"We need to teach the possibility."
Xue Lian went completely still.
So did Aurelia.
Damon continued.
"The true network has Refusal."
"Yes," Xue Lian said.
"Dominion doesn’t."
"No."
"So the problem isn’t preserving your specific sentence."
He looked at the golden point.
"It’s making Dominion recognize that a bearer can say no."
Aurelia slowly understood.
"You want to add Refusal to Dominion’s protocol."
"Not add it."
Damon pointed toward the white network.
"Reconnect what the Architects removed."
The golden point reacted violently.
FUNCTION ALTERATION FORBIDDEN.
Damon laughed.
"We got it."
Aurelia still looked frightened.
"You don’t know if it will work."
"No."
"It could destroy Dominion."
"Is that really a problem?"
"It could destroy you with it."
Damon looked at Ester.
She was already staring at him.
"Don’t even think about it."
"I wasn’t going to—"
"Lie."
"A little."
Xue Lian placed a hand over the white line.
She did not take it.
She only felt it.
"We don’t need to use Damon as the bridge."
He looked at her.
"You have a better option?"
"Yes."
She pointed at herself.
"Me."
Xue Mei immediately grabbed her mother’s arm.
"No."
Xue Lian looked at her.
"Mei."
"You just got rid of an authority."
"Exactly why."
Damon understood.
"She refused to be the center."
Xue Lian nodded.
"My structure has already been recognized by the network as someone who ended possession."
Aurelia looked at her.
"But you aren’t a bearer of Dominion."
"I don’t need to be."
She placed her hand near the line.
"I only need to demonstrate a refusal recognized by the true network."
Damon thought.
"As reference."
"Yes."
"Without becoming the owner."
"Yes."
Xue Mei clearly hated the idea.
"This is dangerous."
Xue Lian smiled at her daughter.
"Now you get to say that to me."
"I’m serious."
"So am I."
Damon looked at the white line in his hand.
Then at Xue Lian.
"If it goes wrong, I let go."
Ester replied.
"You’ll let go before that."
"If it goes wrong."
"Before."
"Bad negotiation."
"Damon."
"Fine."
Xue Lian placed her hand on the line.
The reaction was immediate.
Cold.
Not authority.
Memory.
The old centrality that had once defined entire regions tried to respond out of pure habit.
Xue Lian closed her eyes.
"No."
The white network shone.
The word appeared.
REFUSAL RECOGNIZED.
Dominion trembled.
The golden point on Damon’s arm burned.
EXTERNAL FUNCTION NOT APPLICABLE.
Damon looked at it.
"Because she isn’t your bearer."
Xue Lian opened her eyes.
"Then it needs someone who is."
Everyone looked at Aurelia.
She took a deep breath.
"Me."
Damon slowly released the white line.
Not completely.
He handed its end to Aurelia.
The woman grabbed it.
Her entire body trembled.
Dominion tried to tear it away.
She held tighter.
"Do you want to keep that decision?" Damon asked.
Aurelia looked at him.
"Yes."
"Not because you need to block someone."
"No."
"Not because it’s your duty."
Aurelia fell silent.
That question reached deeper.
Damon waited.
"If there were no Architects."
Silence.
"If Dominion didn’t exist."
Aurelia closed her eyes.
"Would you still choose not to possess other people?"
The answer came without hesitation.
"Yes."
The white line exploded.
Not outward.
Into her.
Dominion reacted.
RESTRICTION RESTORED.
Damon smiled.
"It’s not over."
Xue Lian placed her hand on the floor.
The lines of the true network responded.
"Now."
Aurelia understood.
She did not speak to Dominion.
She spoke to the network.
"My refusal is not a restriction."
The gold vibrated.
"It is a choice."
The white lines crossed through the capsule.
"It should not exist only while I live."
The network pulsed.
Damon felt the golden point try to retreat.
"It’s understanding."
Aurelia took a deep breath.
"Any bearer must be able to refuse possession."
Silence.
Then the network answered.
COMPATIBLE PRINCIPLE.
Dominion exploded into light.
Damon dropped to one knee.
Ester grabbed his shoulder.
"Mark!"
"I know!"
The golden point expanded across his entire arm for an instant.
Then it began to break.
Not disappear.
Reorganize.
The circle lost its center.
It became an open ring.
Aurelia looked.
Her golden eyes changed too.
The black line in her iris split.
Opened.
No longer a vertical line.
An incomplete circle.
Dominion responded.
For the first time, the voice lost that absolute certainty.
PRIMARY BEARER.
Aurelia looked at it.
"Yes."
AUTHORIZE SUCCESSION.
"No."
Silence.
REFUSAL RECORDED.
Damon smiled.
"Better."
The next message came.
PRIORITY SUCCESSOR.
Damon raised his arm.
"Also no."
Another pause.
REFUSAL RECORDED.
The silence that followed was almost absurd.
Vorn started laughing.
Everyone looked at him.
He was sitting against the wall, pale, bleeding, and apparently enjoying himself.
Damon frowned.
"What?"
"You taught Dominion to accept no."
Damon thought.
"Yes."
Vorn laughed harder.
"The Architects would be sick."
"That makes it much better."
Aurelia did not laugh.
She was looking at her own body.
"It isn’t over."
Damon became serious.
"Why?"
"The blockade changed."
"For the better."
"Yes."
"Then?"
Aurelia raised her eyes.
"I am still the primary bearer."
Damon fell silent.
She continued.
"Now Dominion cannot force succession. But as long as I remain the reference, it remains tied to me."
Xue Lian understood.
"You want out."
Aurelia looked at her.
"I have spent enough time inside a capsule."
Damon exhaled.
"Then redefine it."
Vorn laughed again.
"You talk about that like changing clothes."
"It’s been working."
Aurelia studied the open symbol in her own eye.
"A bearer without possession is still a bearer."
Damon nodded.
"Then the next problem is simple."
Ester immediately looked at him.
"When you say simple, something explodes."
"Rarely."
"Damon."
"Frequently."
Xue Lian already knew where he was going.
"Dominion needs to exist without a bearer."
Aurelia went still.
"That has never happened."
Damon smiled.
"Adaptation said that too."
He looked toward the white network.
"We already have precedent."
The golden point reacted.
BEARERLESS STRUCTURE: INVALID.
Damon raised an eyebrow.
"Let’s discuss that."
Aurelia looked at him.
"You’re going to try to free Dominion too."
"No."
She frowned.
Damon smiled.
"I’m going to try to free you from it."
