Stronger by Paying Salaries and I Have 1 Billion Employees
Chapter 641 - 458: Further Investing in DJI, 47,000 Units in 3 Days! Chen Yansen: I Just Want to Be Your Daddy
At five in the afternoon, golden sunlight spilled over the windowsill and scattered across the floor.
People began trickling out of the buildings of companies like Orange Technology, Pinbei Mall, Today Technology, Orange Pay, and Tiangong Technology. Some took the company shuttle back to the city, while others drove their own cars home.
Their schedule was nine to five with a two-hour lunch break, meaning they actually worked six hours a day. While plenty of people stayed for overtime, a great many also left right on time.
Chen Yansen glanced out the window. It was the height of summer in August, and the sky was still as bright as day. The sun showed no sign of setting.
He opened DJI’s official overseas website. The cumulative sales for the Phantom 1 Pro had already surpassed 47,000 units. It had been online for less than three days, yet its sales had already reached what the Phantom 1 had achieved in an entire month.
To make DJI the first drone company in the world to use the Deep Blue Battery, Wang Tao had once again transferred 10% of his equity to Senlian Capital. In exchange, he received Chen Yansen’s additional support and 15 million US Dollars.
As an upgraded version of the DJI Phantom 1, the Phantom 1 Pro was equipped with a 4600 mAh Deep Blue Battery. On a full charge, its flight time could reach 35 to 40 minutes.
Compared to the Phantom 1’s 10-to-15-minute flight time, the Phantom 1 Pro’s endurance had more than tripled.
Of course, the price also rose from 679 US Dollars to 769 US Dollars.
Back in 2013, outdoor sports and photography enthusiasts, especially users in Europe and America, were not short on cash.
A mere 90-US-Dollar price hike for more than double the flight time was an absolute bargain.
The roaring success of the Phantom 1 Pro put 3D Robotics’ founder, Chris Anderson, in a tight spot. His company’s two newly launched drones, the Iris and Iris+, were instantly ignored by the market.
Setting aside the flight control, navigation, and payload systems, its flight endurance alone was completely crushed by the Phantom 1 Pro.
The Iris+ was listed on their official website for 750 US Dollars, and that was without a gimbal.
Its battery capacity was 3500 mAh, and the officially claimed flight time was 10 to 15 minutes. In reality, tests showed it lasted 12 minutes at most.
When used with a gimbal, the flight time dropped to just 8 minutes.
Its price was almost the same as the Phantom 1 Pro, but its flight time was several times worse. Even customers in the North American Region with the worst math skills knew which product to choose.
After discussing it with the other co-founder, Holdi Munoz, he decided to personally travel to China. He hoped to move Chen Yansen with his sincerity and convince Deep Blue Technology to lower its minimum purchase requirement.
But how could they have known? Chen Yansen had always been the type to care about money, not people.
Sincerity?
’Can that stuff be sold for money?’
Drone companies like Parrot from France, Microdrones and Aibotix from Germany, and Swiss Drones from Switzerland all called one after another to inquire.
To all of them, Ma Zhi Ao’s reply was identical: "Deep Blue Battery is very willing to cooperate with your esteemed company. However, our production capacity is currently limited, so we are temporarily unable to supply you."
To put it bluntly, he was looking down on the small orders from these companies.
After all, the boss had made it clear long ago: they wouldn’t accept any contract worth less than 500 million US Dollars.
By that logic, DJI shouldn’t have been qualified to receive any supply either. However, after they proactively offered up 10% of their equity, they received special approval from Chen Yansen.
The high-energy, high-density Deep Blue Battery had turned Chen Yansen into the ’daddy’ that countless drone companies were scrambling to suck up to.
When Wang Tao learned of this industry trend, he was immediately beside himself with anxiety. He was terrified that Chen Yansen would disregard DJI’s survival and sell the Deep Blue Battery to competitors like 3D Robotics, Parrot, or Microdrones.
He thought for a moment, then took out his phone. In the pinned contacts at the top of his address book, he found Chen Yansen’s private number and dialed it.
Chen Yansen picked up his phone. Seeing the caller ID, the corners of his mouth turned up slightly in a wry, knowing smile.
"President Chen, it’s Wang Tao. I heard... that Chris from 3D Robotics is planning to purchase the Deep Blue Battery?"
Wang Tao was a pragmatist and exceptionally capable. He was a lot like Zhou Shouzhi—both were extreme workaholics.
He had a bit of a short temper, and his opening words carried a hint of accusation.
"Are you trying to tell me how to do my job?" Chen Yansen retorted.
The moment Wang Tao heard that, he panicked. Realizing his tone was inappropriate, he quickly explained, "President Chen, I didn’t mean anything by it! It’s just that 3D Robotics’ core business is also in North America, overlapping with DJI’s market. I’m worried it will affect the Phantom 1 Pro’s sales and, in turn, harm Senlian Capital’s interests."
The implication was that Senlian Capital held 23.5% of DJI’s equity; they were all in the same boat.
"I can’t possibly harm Deep Blue Technology’s interests for the sake of DJI’s business," Chen Yansen stated, rejecting him flatly.
Wang Tao’s mind went a little blank, and a wave of regret washed over him.
’When we signed the equity transfer agreement back then, why didn’t I also sign an exclusivity agreement?’
But that was just a fleeting thought. He knew very well that the 10% equity from DJI’s Series B financing was solely to secure special procurement privileges.
Otherwise, given DJI’s shipment volume, they could never fulfill an order of 500 million US Dollars in a single year.
Wang Tao was a smart man. Seeing that Chen Yansen couldn’t open his mouth without mentioning "interests," he understood the subtext.
He took a deep breath and asked with a smile, "President Chen, if DJI wants to obtain exclusive procurement rights, what price would we have to pay?"
Chen Yansen smiled. ’Talking to a smart person really saves effort. You don’t have to spell things out for them to get it instantly.’ He got straight to the point. "I’d like to add another 15 million US Dollars in exchange for another 10% of DJI’s equity. That way, I’ll have something to report back to the group."
’A justification?’
’You’re the big boss of Senlian Capital, who do you need to justify anything to?’
Wang Tao saw through the excuse but didn’t call him out on it.
From his perspective, DJI operated on a dual-class stock system. After accounting for the 15% option pool, the 13.5% held by management, and Senlian Capital’s 23.5% stake, he still held 58% of the equity, and each of his shares had ten times the voting power.
Because of this, even if his equity was diluted by multiple future financing rounds, he could still maintain firm control over all decisions.
The current question was, was it worth it to bind DJI so deeply with Senlian Capital?
Wang Tao mulled it over for about ten seconds before answering honestly, "Thank you for your faith in DJI Technology, President Chen. This time, I’d also like to sign an exclusive procurement agreement."
"Done." Seeing that Wang Tao knew what was good for him, Chen Yansen readily agreed.
Having dealt with Wang Tao, he hung up the phone without another word.
When you held cutting-edge technology in your hands, you could afford to be blunt.
His willingness to invest in DJI was him doing Wang Tao a favor.
As for companies like 3D Robotics, Parrot, or Microdrones, he had never even considered working with them.
After finishing up the trivial matters at hand, Chen Yansen stood up and walked out. He took the elevator to the underground parking garage and was driven back to Delta.
「Meanwhile.」
Zhang Peng held a pregnancy test, a joyous expression on his face, unable to suppress the grin spreading across his lips.
After more than two months of "diligent plowing," he finally saw two lines.
"It’s not too late to regret it now," Chen Fengling, who was beside him, reminded him quietly, her expression complex as she looked at Zhang Peng.
"Regret? No way! I’m going to be a dad!"
Zhang Peng shot to his feet and swept his former boss, current girlfriend, and future wife into his arms, his face alight with excitement.
A warmth spread through Chen Fengling’s heart, and she subconsciously touched her stomach.
"Will your... dad agree?" Chen Fengling asked after a moment of silence, her brow furrowed slightly.
"I’ll call him right now." Hearing this, Zhang Peng turned to grab his phone.
Chen Fengling waited, feeling anxious.
BEEP... BEEP... BEEP... The dial tone droned on from the receiver.
CLICK. The call connected!
"Dad, I’m going to be a dad!" Zhang Peng said casually.
’Going to be a dad?’
Zhang Peng’s father was stunned. It took him a moment to process it. He lowered his voice and asked, "Is your boss there with you?"
"She’s my girlfriend, not my boss. I’ve already resigned from Ping’an," Zhang Peng corrected him.
"Is she really pregnant?" Zhang Peng’s father asked in disbelief, thinking it was just another one of his son’s tricks.
"Hold on!" Zhang Peng sent him a photo of the pregnancy test.
Zhang Peng’s father opened the image and felt his vision go dark. With an air of resignation, he passed the phone to his wife.
Neither of them wanted to accept the reality of the situation. But now that they had a grandchild on the way, they couldn’t exactly teach their son to be a deadbeat, could they?
"Tell your girlfriend to give her parents a heads-up. Our families should meet as soon as possible to set the dates for the engagement and the wedding," Zhang Peng’s father said, his face grim and his tone reluctant.
"Dad, you agree?" Zhang Peng asked, pleasantly surprised.
’President Chen’s trick really worked!’
"You bastard! If I didn’t agree, were you just going to get rid of my grandchild?" his father roared.
"Could be a granddaughter, you know," Zhang Peng muttered with a pout.
"A granddaughter either!" the old man bellowed, the roar making Zhang Peng’s eardrums ache.
Even though he was being cursed out, Zhang Peng’s face was covered in a brilliant smile.
Giving the old man a grandchild was more persuasive than any words he could have said.
Ten minutes later, Zhang Peng couldn’t stand the old man’s nagging any longer and abruptly ended the call.
Chen Fengling covered her mouth to hide a faint smile. Seeing her young puppy get chewed out so viciously actually put her in a much better mood.
"Sister Ling, I’ve applied for a transfer to the ’Semir Online’ project. The process should be completed in the next day or two," Zhang Peng said.
"I applied too. Not many employees at Ping’an are interested in ’Semir Online,’ so there are plenty of open spots. Here, take this card. Once we’re both transferred to the Luzhou Headquarters, we’ll buy a house first."
Chen Fengling pulled a bank card from her pocket and pressed it into Zhang Peng’s hand.
"Sister Ling, this is your salary card," Zhang Peng said, his heart warming and his nose tingling. He tried to hand the card back.
"We have to buy a house eventually. You’re the child’s father. Be good and take the money," Chen Fengling coaxed him gently.
There was a total of 300,000 yuan on the card, more than enough for a down payment on a three-bedroom apartment in Luzhou.
Zhang Peng had his own savings, but he had only been working for a few days. His entire net worth added up to less than 100,000 yuan.
"Sister Ling, you’re the best."
"Stop messing around! And you’d better behave yourself for the time being."
"But I want to."
"You want my ass!"
...
...
At Delta No. 108 Villa, Chen Yansen was lying on a soft recliner by the pool, his eyes closed. His right hand dangled into the water, where two plump koi gently nibbled at his fingertips.
An unknown amount of time passed before he suddenly opened his eyes. He lifted his hand to check his watch—only ten minutes had gone by.
"I haven’t dreamed in a long time. Why would I dream about Ye Qiuping?"
Chen Yansen chuckled in spite of himself, shook his head, and muttered under his breath.
Ever since his Spiritual Power and constitution had broken past 100, his sleep duration had grown shorter and shorter. He would automatically wake up after only forty or fifty minutes of sleep each day.
He had tested it before. Even if he went seven days straight without sleep, he wouldn’t feel the slightest bit drowsy.
For him, sleeping was more of a habit than a necessity.
"Boss, dinner is ready," a soft, sweet voice called from behind him.
Thinking of the dream he just had, Chen Yansen felt a fire ignite within him.
Dinner?
’The hell with dinner!’
President Chen strode into the kitchen, lifted Ye Qiuping onto the counter, and began to feast on his "seafood appetizer."
Ye Qiuping bit her lip. She could feel that Chen Yansen was particularly fiery today.
