Stripping For My Devil Ex Husband
Chapter 181: The Hollow Devil
Before Victoria could process the sudden, cryptic concession, Damian turned on his heel. He caught the brass handle of Room 412, pushed the heavy door open, and stepped back into the suite, letting the latch click shut firmly behind him.
Victoria stood alone in the wide, echoing corridor, the sterile fluorescent lights humming faintly overhead.
A chill settled deep in her chest.
In all her years of navigating the Sterling empire, she had never heard her son speak with such detached, fatalistic certainty. Damian was a man who never surrendered territory, never gave up leverage, and never let go of an asset once his claws sank in.
One thing had become terrifyingly clear to her... Damian wasn’t keeping Anastasia Vance by his side out of love, or even obsession.
It was something else. A calculated timeline.
When the time is right.
Victoria’s hands tightened around her leather handbag, a cold dread washing over her as she stared at the closed door.
The heavy suite door shut behind Damian with a dull, hollow thud, cutting off the corridor and the remnants of his mother’s voice.

Valerie, who had been hovering nervously near the edge of the mattress, snapped her head up. The moment she caught the terrifying, dead-eyed stillness rolling off her brother, her breath hitched.
"I’ll... I’ll give you two some space," Valerie whispered quickly, looking between Damian and the bed. She touched Ana’s hand briefly in a hurried gesture of comfort, skirted wide around Damian’s towering frame, and slipped out the door, the latch clicking shut behind her.
Silence settled over Room 412... heavy, suffocating, and thick with tension.
Anastasia remained propped against the pillows, her back rigid. Her cheeks were blotchy and red from crying, but she had dried her eyes, her chin tilted slightly upward in a desperate attempt to salvage whatever dignity she had left.
She watched him warily beneath the plastic oxygen tubing, expecting another explosive outburst, another bruising grip on her jaw, or another barrage of vicious insults about her weakness.
None of that came.
Instead, Damian walked over to the foot of the bed with slow, measured steps. The wild, combustible fury that had burned in his eyes thirty minutes ago was completely extinguished. In its place was something far more unnerving... a cold, clinical detachment that made him look like a total stranger.
He didn’t touch her. He didn’t even look her in the eyes.
Damian reached for the digital chart hanging from the metal rail, his fingers casually tapping the touch display to review her corticosteroid dosage and oxygen saturation levels.
His posture was stiff, formal, devoid of any trace of the unhinged beast who had shattered glass and shoved a needle through her thigh on a blood-slicked dance floor.
Ana watched his hands move over the screen, a cold prickle of unease creeping down her spine. The fiery rage she hated had at least carried heat... it proved he felt something, however twisted and toxic.
But this sudden, vacant hollow in his demeanor felt worse. It felt like being cataloged in a warehouse.
"What did your mother say to you?" Ana asked, her voice cracking slightly, raw and strained from the intubation.
Damian didn’t look up from the screen. "Nothing that concerns you."
"Damian..."
"The attending physician will clear your IV line at five," he interrupted smoothly, his gravelly tone stripped entirely of emotion, sounding like an executive reading off an invoice. "The swelling in your airways is down to safe margins. A private medical transport will meet us at the underground service bay at five-thirty. You are being discharged into the penthouse. The convoy will run under armed escort."
Ana’s brow furrowed, a knot of confusion and hurt tightening in her throat. She searched his impassive, chiseled face, but found only an impenetrable stone wall.
"I’m not a package on a shipping dock, Damian," she whispered, the tremor in her words betraying her fragile state. "You don’t get to yell at me, kiss me like you want to tear me apart, and then turn around and speak to me like a stranger. Look at me."
Damian smoothly clicked the digital chart back into its cradle with a sharp snap.
Only then did his obsidian eyes drift up to meet hers. There was no venom in them. No possessive fire. Just an empty, endless dark that sent a violent chill rippling across her skin.
"Get some rest, Anastasia," Damian said quietly, his voice hollow as an open grave. "You have a long ride ahead of you."
***********************
The heavily armored Maybach glided through the rain-slicked evening streets, flanked on both sides by tinted black SUVs. Inside the climate-controlled cabin, a partition wall sealed them off from the driver, leaving Anastasia and Damian in heavy, insulated quiet.
Ana sat curled against the buttery leather of the rear seat, wrapped in a heavy cashmere coat Victoria had brought for the ride. The oxygen cannula was gone, but her throat still carried a raw, burning ache, and her body felt weighed down by lead.
Across from her, Damian sat rigid, staring out the rain-streaked window at the blurring city lights, his profile carved from cold, unreadable marble.
The car took a sharp, sudden swerve around a construction barricade.
The centrifugal pull jarred Damian sideways against the armrest. A sharp, involuntary intake of breath hissed through his teeth, his hand flying to his left ribcage as his features contorted in a momentary flash of agony.
A small wince broke through his iron mask, the healing bullet wounds from his recent syndicate ambush clearly tearing against the strain of carrying her through the hospital chaos earlier that morning.
Ana’s instincts took over before her pride could stop them.
"Damian," she murmured, her raspy voice soft as she shifted across the leather seat toward him. Her hands hovered near his side, careful not to touch the bandages beneath his charcoal shirt. "Let me help you sit back. You shouldn’t be twisting like that, the stitches are going to tear..."
Damian didn’t shift away, but his large, calloused hand shot out, catching her wrist in mid-air.
He didn’t squeeze, yet the grip was immovable, halting her fingers inches from his chest. Slowly, his dark head turned toward her. His obsidian eyes, bloodshot and shadowed with sleepless exhaustion, locked directly onto hers.
He searched her hazel eyes with an intense, brooding bewilderment... as if she were a riddle that was slowly driving him mad.
He thought of Valerie sobbing over her in the trauma bay, Julian openly breaking ranks to coax a smile out of her, and his own mother... a woman who had watched empires burn without shedding a tear... standing in a hospital hallway accusing him of cruelty.
"What kind of magic do you put on people, Anastasia?" Damian rasped, his gravelly voice scraping the quiet air of the luxury cabin.
Ana blinked, her brow furrowing slightly in genuine confusion. "What?"
His grip remained firm on her wrist, his thumb resting over her rapid pulse. "My sister cries for you. Even my mother stands ready to draw blood on your behalf. Why is everyone so hell-bent on protecting you? What makes them think you’re worth the ruin?"
The bitterness in his tone was familiar, but beneath the armor, Ana heard the quiet, fractured frustration of a man who couldn’t fathom why the entire world seemed drawn to the fragile stray he kept caged.
Ana didn’t pull her hand back. She looked past the dangerous, hardened lines of his face, seeing the raw fatigue etched deep around his eyes and the unmistakable phantom ache he carried in his chest.
A small, faint smile touched her pale lips... soft, tired, and laced with a quiet, undeniable truth.
"Not everyone matters to me, Damian," she whispered, her hazel eyes holding his gaze without a shred of fear. "Only you."
