Stripping For My Devil Ex Husband

Chapter 179: The Devil’s Fight

The heavy elevator chimes broke the corridor’s suffocating stillness.

Julian rounded the corner first, flanked by two sharp suited figures flashing federal credentials at the Sterling security detail posted along the ICU wing. The lead investigator, Special Agent Sloane... a seasoned, stone-faced man with greying temples... carried a ruggedized, biometric locked Pelican case.

Damian pushed off the wall, smoothing the front of his rumpled shirt as his features instantly snapped back into an impenetrable, cold mask.

"Damian," Julian said, his voice clipped and strictly professional as he came to an abrupt halt. "This is Special Agent Sloane, head of the regional field task force, and Senior Tech Analyst Miller. They oversaw the extraction and secured the digital chain of custody from Nocturne."

Agent Vance offered a curt nod, his eyes measuring the tension radiating off the younger Sterling. "Mr. Sterling. We coordinated directly with the hospital’s attending toxicologist on arrival. The preliminary blood panel pulled from Ms. Vance’s charts align with synthetic prussic acid derivatives found in concentrated bitter almond extract. Given her registered medical profile, this crossed the threshold from a city health code violation to federal attempted homicide before sunrise."

"I don’t care about the statutory classification, Agent Sloane," Damian replied, his gravelly voice dropping to a low, lethal cadence. "I care about names and faces."

"We have them," Sloane countered calmly.

"Let’s get off the public corridor," Julian intervened, cutting between the two men and gesturing toward a private consultation room across the hall. "The tech is ready. We run it in here."

The four men stepped into the soundproof room. Julian secured the deadbolt while Analyst Miller placed the rugged case onto the central conference table, popping the latches and booting up an encrypted, multi-display terminal.

Within seconds, nine high-definition security feeds from Nocturne bloomed across the screens, synchronized to an exact timeline...01:14 AM.

"The club’s management attempted to claim the subterranean servers had an automatic wipe protocol," Miller said, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard. "They didn’t. We pulled the raw, unedited feeds from every angle... main floor, VIP mezzanine, service stairwells, and the sub-basement staging pantry."

Miller brought the primary display to full screen, focusing on Camera 7... the service pantry directly beneath the VIP lounge.

"Here," Sloane pointed with a pen tip. "Timestamp 01:22 AM. The pastry platter is being assembled by the night sous chef. Pure honey glaze, standard fruit garnish. The chef steps into the walk-in cooler at 01:25."

Damian leaned forward, his palms planting flat against the mahogany table, his obsidian eyes burning into the monitor.

At 01:26, a young server in standard black livery slipped into the frame from the service corridor door. The man was glancing repeatedly over his shoulder, his movements rushed and erratic.

He pulled a small, unmarked glass dropper vial from his inner vest pocket. With shaking hands, he unscrewed the cap and soaked the crushed crumb topping on the top tier of the pastry display, tucking the empty vial back into his pocket before lifting the silver tray.

"Wait," Damian ground out, his jaw ticking violently. "Rewind Camera 12. The service corridor outside that door, two minutes prior."

Miller hit the keystrokes.

The screen jumped back. A dark figure in an oversized trench coat, silk scarf, and large sunglasses stood half-concealed in the shadow of the concrete stairwell, pressing an envelope into the waiter’s hand before slipping him the vial.

Damian’s knuckles cracked against the wood. Even through the grainy infrared feed, the angle of the jaw, the manic tilt of the head, and the distinct signet ring on her right thumb were undeniable.

Vivian Stark.

"We have an active federal warrant out for her arrest," Agent Sloane stated, his voice hardening as he watched the footage loop. "And vehicle tracking picked up a black town car with altered plates leaving the service alley four minutes later, heading straight toward the North Shore corridor."

Damian straightened up slowly, his broad frame casting a long shadow across the illuminated terminal. His face was entirely void of human warmth, stripped clean of the raw panic that had choked him in the trauma bay, leaving behind only the cold, methodical calculation of an executioner.

"Cancel the warrant, Agent Sloane," Damian rasped, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly quiet whisper that made the analyst freeze over the keyboard. "She doesn’t belong to the state."

Agent Sloane’s jaw hardened, his posture stiffening as the federal authority in the room asserted itself.

"Step back, Mr. Sterling," Sloane warned, his tone flat and unyielding. "This is an active federal attempted-homicide investigation. I suggest you remember your boundaries. You will not interfere with our field operations, and you will not obstruct federal jurisdiction to run a private vendetta."

Damian let out a sharp, derisive scoff, a sound dripping with utter contempt.

"Your jurisdiction?" Damian leaned in, towering over the agent with a predator’s menacing calm. "She has been a fugitive roaming free for over a month. In that time, your brilliant, airtight system has allowed her to strike Anastasia twice... first at the abandoned dock warehouse, and now poisoning a plate right under heavy security. Your badges didn’t stop her throat from closing, and your protocols didn’t keep her breathing on that gurney."

Vance didn’t flinch, though his eyes darkened at the harsh truth. "We are currently running an internal sweep across the eastern field offices. Vivian Stark is receiving high-clearance logistical shielding. We are actively hunting the moles within the state apparatus who are flagging our checkpoints and scrubbing her vehicle transponders to let her slip through the net."

"Then your department is rotten to the core," Damian fired back, his obsidian eyes burning with unvarnished fury.

He didn’t raise his voice, but the chilling gravity behind each word made the air in the consultation room freeze. He swept an icy glare between the two federal agents, dismissing their badges, their laptops, and their warrants with a single, ruthless breath.

"I don’t give a damn about your internal sweeps or your paperwork, Sloane. I am done waiting for the law to do what it’s clearly too incompetent to finish," Damian said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying promise. "I want Vivian Stark brought to her knees at my feet. And I will get her... with your help, or straight through you."

The elevator doors slid open with a soft, mechanical chime, revealing Victoria Sterling stepping briskly onto the private ICU wing.

Even under the harsh fluorescent lights of Mount Sinai, she carried herself with the poised, commanding elegance of a woman who had survived the ruthless collapse of the Sterling empire and raised two formidable children from the ashes.

Her sharp, discerning gaze swept past the armed guards stationed along the corridor until she locked onto Valerie, who was huddled miserably on a low vinyl bench, clutching a cold paper cup of untouched coffee.

"Valerie," Victoria called out, her heels clicking rhythmously against the linoleum.

Valerie snapped her head up, her eyes rimmed with red and still swollen from crying. She scrambled to her feet, her voice trembling. "Mom... you’re here."

"Where is she?" Victoria asked without missing a beat, her tone brisk yet steadying as she placed a gloved hand on her daughter’s shoulder. "Which room is Anastasia in?"

"Room 412," Valerie choked out, gesturing vaguely down the quiet hallway toward the closed wooden door. "Mom... I’m so sorry. I didn’t know. I just wanted us to have fun. I wanted one normal night where we could dance and drink without security breathing down our necks, and now... now Damian wants to kill me, and Ana almost..."

Victoria stopped her with a heavy, quiet sigh, reaching up to gently cup Valerie’s tear-stained cheek.

"Breathe, darling," Victoria murmured, her voice warm, layered with an ancient resilience born from decades of syndicate violence.

"It is wise to be careful, Valerie, but it is not a life to be kept completely caged. You did nothing wrong by wanting to breathe, by wanting to pull her out into the world to have some joy. What happened in that kitchen was calculated malice... it was completely, entirely out of your control. Damian will scream because fear makes your brother cruel, but this is not your cross to bear."

Valerie let out a shuddering breath, nodding weakly against her mother’s hand as Victoria drew her in and guided her toward Room 412.

Victoria gently pushed the heavy door open, stepping inside with Valerie close behind.

The soft, rhythmic hiss of the oxygen cannula greeted them in the dim amber light of the suite. But the moment their eyes fell upon the bed, both women froze in complete, stunned disbelief.

Anastasia was curled small beneath the stiff hospital blanket, facing the cold glass of the window. Her delicate shoulders trembled violently, muffled, breathless sniffles breaking through the quiet room as she tried... and failed... to choke back her tears into the thin cotton pillow.

Valerie gasped softly, her hand flying to her mouth, while Victoria’s poised composure cracked into immediate, maternal alarm.

"Anastasia...?" Victoria murmured, closing the distance to the bedside in three swift strides, her heart clenching at the sight of the younger woman breaking apart in the dark. She placed a warm, steadying hand on Ana’s trembling shoulder. "Darling, look at me... What happened? Why are you crying like this?"
