Chapter 129: Humans Poisoned the Forest
Chapter 129: Chapter 129: Humans Poisoned the Forest
By this time, the others had mostly finished eating. Tonight, they were happier than if it were the New Year. Many licked their fingers, relishing the lingering taste of the pork and still wanting more. The trauma of their earlier encounter with the wolf pack had entirely dissipated, replaced by the sheer joy of a heavy meat dinner. For now, all was well.
That was, until the dead of night.
PFFT, PFFT, PFFT!
PFFFFFFT!
No one knew who let out the first stinky fart, but a second quickly followed, then a third. Soon, the resting area was engulfed in an endless, deafening barrage of flatulence.
Surrounded by the noxious fumes, many couldn’t hold back and began to vomit. Once the first person threw up, a second followed, then a third. In fact, many weren’t even sickened by the stench itself; hearing the revolting sounds of others retching triggered their own gag reflexes, causing a chain reaction of vomiting.
The Ling Family was awakened by the commotion. Fortunately, they were stationed at the very tail end of the camp and upwind from the disaster zone, so the stench wasn’t nearly as overpowering. Still, Ling Qianjun quickly led his family further away to spare them the misery.
The government officers, however, were not so lucky. Stationed at the very front of the camp, they were directly downwind. The breeze carried the concentrated miasma of chain-farting straight toward them. The government officers coughed violently and puked their guts out. It was an absolutely revolting ordeal.
The next second, those who had been passing gas sprinted madly into the woods. The scene was nothing short of spectacular.
"Hurry! Run!"
"I can’t hold it much longer! Out of the way, you guys in front!"
"Oh God, I’m losing it, I’m losing it!"
"..."
As they charged into the forest, a continuous cacophony of explosive diarrhea mixed with earth-shattering farts echoed out. No, it wasn’t just noise—it was a polyphonic symphony of bowels. It sounded something like this: PFFT-POP! SQUELCH! PFFT-SPLAT!
The stench literally smoked the birds out of the trees. SWOOSH! They flushed out of the canopy and darted high into the sky. Some birds flew in wobbly, erratic circles, seemingly dizzy from the fumes. Even the wild animals inside bolted out of the forest as fast as their legs could carry them.
If anyone could understand their frantic squeaks and howls, they would know the sheer agony and terror the woodland creatures were experiencing. The animals were practically screaming, "Ah! Help! The humans are dropping poison gas in the woods!"
Dozens of people emptying their bowels all at once was indeed a monumental event.
After the government officers finally stopped throwing up, they were spooked, wondering, "What is going on? Is it mass food poisoning?" But they had eaten the wild boar meat tonight too and were perfectly fine. Why was everyone else afflicted?
Just as they were puzzling over this, Ling Qianjun walked over. Luo noticed that aside from his men and the Ling family, everyone else had fallen ill. He cast a suspicious glance at the Ling Family.
To his surprise, Ling Qianjun spoke up in a seemingly casual tone. "Their diets have been too plain lately. Eating so much rich food all at once tonight, especially all that fatty meat, was too much for their stomachs. It gave them the runs."
After a brief pause, Ling Qianjun looked at Luo and added, "You officers have meat in your daily rations, so naturally, you wouldn’t suffer the same fate. As for us, well, you know I hunt wild game frequently, so my family’s stomachs can handle it well enough."
His reasoning was flawless. Ling Qianjun always caught something whenever he entered the woods. Moreover, his family had opted for the spareribs tonight, which didn’t have much fat. Considering the usual meager diet of the exiled prisoners compared to what they gorged on today, it was obvious Ling Qianjun was right.
Luo believed his explanation. However, he was still slightly dissatisfied. "Then why didn’t you warn everyone earlier?"
He thought, "If he had given them a heads-up, couldn’t this whole mess have been avoided?"
The other government officers also shot Ling Qianjun reproachful glares. But then, Ling Qianjun delivered his next line.
