Chapter 1622: Chapter 98: Fox and Rat Game (8)_2
Even if it’s me, do I dare to resist Your Majesty?
Perhaps, if she wants to, I would give everything, everything I have, including my flesh and soul, to resist anyone.
He hates her, but as long as she says a word, he would burn everything he has without hesitation; he would burn everything for her without hesitation, yet he hates her from the bottom of his heart.
But in the end, she never spoke up.
Was it just for this?
Just for love that cannot be obtained?
How shallow, how vulgar, the platitudes even Marvey wouldn’t want to write.
No, that’s not right, this is also an illusion, a facade to cover up the bloody truth, not deep enough, not cruel enough. It must cut through the skin like a butcher’s knife, slice through the flesh, smash the bones, until the soul.
At this moment, the root of all Siegfried’s pain isn’t love unattained; that’s just his own deception.
The one he truly hates, the one he hates to the core, wishes to devour and skin alive, isn’t Elizabeth Li Yang.
Elizabeth Li Yang is just a target, one might even say a scapegoat.
The person he truly hates.
Is himself.
He has fantasized countless times that he is a superhuman, a cold, heartless predator who could live on indifferent even if the world perished, leaving only himself.
But he isn’t.
He isn’t that kind of person.
He longs to be loved.
Deep inside, he is still that insecure, sensitive, tearful little boy, wearing shabby old clothes, standing timidly in front of the gates of the Royal Military School, not daring to look inside.
He hates this version of himself, wishes to tear it apart, but he is powerless to change.
This is the true root of his pain.
She is not the cause; she shouldn’t be hated; on the contrary, she is the light that saves him.
So, when he and she left the Empire, his heart sparked with joy, ecstasy, filled to the brim.
For a moment, he really thought he could abandon everything and wander the world with her.
To be accurate, until he was caught, he was vaguely expecting.
Yet, he never thought Marvey would be Your Majesty’s secret agent.
Does he hate Marvey?
At first, the feeling of betrayal did cause him unbearable pain. He never thought that of his only two friends, one approached him with a purpose, he even began to doubt the other half.
But soon, the pain of betrayal was overshadowed by another emotion.
All presumed courage turned out to be nothing but child’s play in the eyes of adults.
Elopement?
Laughable.
Helplessness consumed Siegfried.
He just wanted to laugh aloud.
Haha, let the adults worry, children should have no care, easier indeed.
So Siegfried burped, gestured for the jailer to take away the tableware, and strolled back to bed, lying heavily.
He planned to sleep well, preferably never waking up.
At that moment, he sharply heard about three or four people approaching his cell.
Jailer shifts always involve two people, all strong young men. Three or four people, footsteps mixed, definitely not jailers.
But Siegfried lazily ignored, still lay sideways, eyes closed.
"Sentinel—" the order came from outside, "Salute!"
"Ha," Siegfried thought, "a big shot has come."
The door creaked open, uneven footsteps entered the building, stopping in front of his cell.
Siegfried still lay on the bed.
"Hey!" The jailer spoke for the first time in days, knocking the iron bars with a stick, shouting sternly, "Get up!"
Siegfried ignored.
The jailer clicked his tongue, pushed open the cell door, strode to the bedside, and reached to grab Siegfried’s shoulder.
Just as the fingers touched his shoulder, Siegfried grabbed the jailer’s hand, flipped him onto the bed.
"Imperial Dog!" The subdued jailer cursed, "Let go of me!"
Siegfried sneered, applied pressure, the jailer’s arm twisted unnaturally, almost audibly tearing.
The jailer was tough, face turning blue, about to bleed, yet no scream of pain, still cursing.
"Enough," a voice seasoned by life’s hardships resonated in Siegfried’s ear, "Earl, stop bullying our student."
Siegfried’s heart skipped, yet his face remained calm; he pulled the jailer from the bed, pushing him aside.
The jailer nearly stumbled, others quickly held him.
The cell briefly plunged into silence, Siegfried seizing the chance to survey the arrivals:
The forty-something, tired-looking middle-aged soldier was obviously the visit’s star, immediately controlling him if necessary;
The young officer seemed to be the middle-aged soldier’s adjutant, looked sharp, but only had one leg, could target;
Also a sixteen-seventeen-year-old soldier, immature, inconsequential;
The toughest opponents were still those jailers.
"Student?" Eight days of silence and Siegfried spoke for the first time, "What is this place?"
"This is the Fengshi City Army Officer Academy," the middle-aged soldier responded calmly.
"Who are you?"
"I am the principal, John Jeska."
"So it’s Lord Jeska, what an honor to brighten this humble abode," Siegfried with eyes measuring the distance between them, paced as he asked with a false smile, "May I know why your unannounced visit?"
As soon as he moved, the middle-aged soldier’s entourage watched him intently.
"Hard," Siegfried thought.
As Siegfried rapidly sought a breakthrough strategy, the middle-aged soldier spoke.
"I just wanted to see, after thirty-six years the hero who defeated Suleiman of the Public Teaching World, what he looked like."
At that remark, all present were startled, every one of them turned their eyes to Siegfried.
Identified again, and accurately so, Siegfried didn’t bother disguising anymore.
"Now that you’ve seen?" Siegfried asked sarcastically, "Are you satisfied?"
"Seen? No," the middle-aged soldier said, "because I’m totally blind now, had you come a year earlier, maybe I would’ve had the chance to witness ’the terror of the world subdued.’"
The cell was dimly lit, hearing this, Siegfried realized, before him the man had empty eye sockets, like two holes.
"As for satisfaction," the middle-aged soldier slowly grinned, "Mmm, very satisfied, very satisfied."
The words weren’t really heard by Siegfried, he was fixated on her, with his identity unveiled, was her existence known too?
What to do?
What to do?
Who didn’t keep the secret?
Was it Marvey?
No, Marvey might be loud, but he’s the hardest to pry secrets from, also, being the Emperor’s spy, he shouldn’t disclose Elizabeth’s existence and identity.
Then who? Who else?
As Siegfried forced down his worry for Elizabeth, urging himself to think calmly, the middle-aged soldier spoke again.
"It was Princess Elizabeth who informed us of your identity," though eyeless, Siegfried felt the words pierce his heart, "Rest assured, the Princess is safe, she’s been taken good care of."
"Well taken care of?" Siegfried scoffed, "Like me?"
Expecting polite words, he was surprised by the straightforward answer: "About the same."
"You!" Siegfried fumed, lunged towards the middle-aged soldier.
Others quickly shielded the middle-aged soldier.
"If you dare harm a single hair of the Princess," Siegfried fiercely scanned the insurgent gang, clenching his teeth warningly, "I promise, you’ll witness the Emperor’s most terrifying wrath."
The rebel soldiers looked contemptuous, the middle-aged soldier’s words nearly made Siegfried cough blood.
"Why would we touch the Princess’s hair?" the middle-aged soldier inquired, "and hasn’t the Pretender Emperor’s wrath been witnessed many times?"
