Steampunk: Sixth Era Epic
Chapter 2177: Sword and Light
Chapter 2177: Chapter 2177: Sword and Light
Having agreed on a time to meet Miss Belindel again tomorrow, Shard finally returned to his home in Tobesk after a tiring day.
Since Emilia was temporarily staying here, the house naturally had its lights on. Luviya’s shoes were in the first-floor hallway’s shoe cabinet, indicating that the purple-eyed Miss Diviner had taken Emilia to tour the Prophet’s Society this afternoon and then returned together.
The keen-eared Mia habitually ran downstairs to greet Shard, while upstairs, Luviya, who was discussing life at Saint Byrons Academy with Emilia, laughed and said to the Elf girl:
"Shard’s cat is so smart that its intelligence always surprises us. Shard has often asked me to divine if Mia is..."
"Meow~ Meow~"
She paused mid-sentence and looked towards the staircase with Emilia. They had recognized the sound of a "warning" from a cat, followed by Shard’s somewhat "panicked" explanation:
"What are you doing this for? Don’t you recognize me? Wait, I haven’t cuddled any other cat. Why are you angry... But that was a Ghost Cat... No, can souls have a scent? How did you detect it? I was helping it find its owner, and as a thank you, it brushed against me. I really only held it for a moment and let it sit on my shoulder."
"Meow!"
Luviya stood up with a smile, and when she reached the entrance of the living room, she just saw Shard still playing around with the cat.
She didn’t intend to help Shard; instead, she reminded him:
"Go change your clothes and prepare for projection to meet Miss Danester. About an hour ago, your poetry manuscript page conveyed her invitation to meet you, which I accepted on your behalf. I think it’s probably about the Moon Bay incident."
"Got it, I’ll go right now. Oh, Luviya, please help me keep Mia under control. Mia, where does your competitiveness come from? Emilia, Emilia, come help me."
But Luviya stopped the Elf girl:
"That’s what you get for always flirting outside. You finally made Mia angry, huh?"
It’s hard to say if her words held any other meaning.
On this Tuesday evening, Miss Danester arranged to meet Shard, of course, because of the Moon Bay Dock incident from last weekend during the blizzard night. The projection of the Evil of the Deep Sea appeared near Moon Bay, and the news of the subsequently appeared "Moonlight Dragon" couldn’t be concealed from the Three Major Academies. Compared to them, the three dragons found by the Dragon Feast Cult and those Dragon Knights seemed less significant.
When Shard appeared at the familiar central clearing of Saint Byrons Library, the red-haired sorceress sitting on the sofa immediately made the photograph on the glass coffee table float in front of Shard:
"Shard, don’t try to say this has nothing to do with you."
Since it was taken at night and the photographer’s hand was trembling, the scene in the black and white photo from the blizzard night at Moon Bay was quite blurry, and the silhouette of the Silver Great Dragon was even more indistinct. Compared to the photos Dorothy took of Shard on Green Island, this photo had no artistic beauty whatsoever, and if Shard hadn’t been there, he almost didn’t recognize the blurry object as a glowing Silver Great Dragon.
Seeing Shard’s investigative look at the photo, Miss Danester teased him before he could reply:
"So the high ring sorcery you consulted me about last week was actually a Dragon Transformation spell?"
She was implicitly affirming Shard’s identity as the Silver Great Dragon, but Shard put down the photo and immediately denied it:
"The sorcery I consulted you about isn’t this; the transformation spell was just an accident. Besides, I can’t easily transform into a dragon again; I’m only a Seventh Ring; I don’t have that powerful of power."
He didn’t deny that he was the dragon.
The photo flew back into Miss Danester’s hand, and she glanced at the dragon then at Shard, as if trying to forcefully connect the two:
"So you still insist that anyone could be The Chosen One, but only you can’t be, right?"
"Yes, although I’ve transformed into a dragon, the Brightness’s Chosen One must have nothing to do with me."
Shard said with confidence, leading Miss Danester to shake her head with a smile:
"Every time I see you speak seriously about something, I find it amusing. So I believe you again this time, just like the previous times. This time, I called you here just to confirm the dragon affair; you really surprised me. I didn’t know you were so skilled in transformation spells before."
Upon finishing, she glanced at the dragon again:
"During the background investigation, it wasn’t found that you were Dragonborn. Does a dragon transformed by a non-Dragonborn shapeshifter still be so pure... But I must remind you, personal transformation should be progressive, transitioning from ordinary creatures to supernatural creatures gradually for the normal sequence. Transformation into a dragon is considered the most difficult transformation spell for someone like us without any Dragon species bloodline."
She didn’t probe into Shard’s actions at the time but instead questioned:
"Would you like me to recommend a few professors skilled in the study of transformation? Both the Political Economics and Chemistry Academy have some transformation masters."
"No need for now, my transformation spell is different from ordinary transformation spells."
As Shard declined, Miss Danester did not insist and shifted the topic:
"I don’t care what you’re doing in Moon Bay, but you must be careful. The appearance of that unusual Silver Great Dragon was already two days ago, and the news has probably spread to every corner of the Material World. The Academy is also discussing when to send someone to Moon Bay, but the current problem is, there aren’t clear clues pointing to the Chosen of Light being in Moon Bay."
Although many things have indeed happened in Moon Bay, the mere appearance of the Dragon Feast Cult already sparks imagination, there is still no definite evidence.
"The fragment of the Poem Chapter possessed by the Academy and Church, doesn’t it contain information about the seventh Chosen One?"
Shard asked curiously, and Miss Danester nodded;
"After you brought me news from Moon Bay last time, I did take some time to investigate. In fact, there are quite a few fragments regarding the ’Brightness’ Chosen, but most lack directional content. ’Righteousness’ and ’Dragon’ and ’Light’, are the three most important keywords about this Chosen One. Besides, from the messages shared by Zaras Literary Academy, the Chosen One Ceremony this time involves very complex elements, related to a sword."
"Oh?"
Shard immediately perked up, the message brought by the black cat in the evening, "The Dragon is unimportant, what’s important is Righteousness, the Sword Bearer is also Righteousness" includes "sword", but his current understanding has never mentioned "sword".
Miss Danester said:
"Before the Ancient God: Radiant Dragon left in the Early Second Era, he used his massive power and tailbone to forge a ’Sword of Light’. The fragment held by Zaras Literary Academy indicates the Chosen One Ceremony this time is related to pulling out that sword."
Seeing Shard still doubtful, she understood:
"Not only you, even I am hearing about the so-called ’Sword of Light’ for the first time. These days while you’re busy in Moon Bay, I haven’t been idle either. You know, the Dawn Church actually is quite connected to the Ancient God: Radiant Dragon’s cult, they seem to know some truths, but they haven’t been confirmed yet. But what can be confirmed is that the ’Light Worshipper Training Association’ already appearing in the Moon Bay region is similarly related to that ancient cult, they very likely know some things too."
Since mentioning this matter, Shard also had news to share:
"The Dragon Feast Cult is actually also connected with that Ancient Dragon God of Light and Dragon."
"What?"
Miss Danester asked puzzled:
"Isn’t the Dragon Feast Cult a group composed of followers of that Evil God? What’s the connection with the Ancient God?"
"During my investigation in Moon Bay, which was last Sunday night, I discovered some ancient secrets: The Great One ’Dragon Devourer’ is very likely the unnamed Firstborn of the Ancient Dragon God."
Though this involves divine information, even a Thirteen-Ring Sorcerer hearing it won’t have issues due to the inherent pollution of the information. Miss Danester was startled, it’s indeed the first time she heard this matter; the birth of the Old God and the departure of the Ancient God has always been unfathomable taboos, even she as a Thirteen Rings is no exception.
But if what Shard said is true, then she even less understands why the Ancient God’s Firstborn would want to devour the dragon:
"There’s such a thing... Anyway, while you investigate in Moon Bay, keep an eye out for rumors related to the sword. It can’t be confirmed if the sword is a Relic, nor even if the sword has a physical entity. But once the sword’s location is identified, or the ritual to summon the sword, it basically identifies the Chosen One Ceremony this time."
Shard noted these contents, thinking in his heart that since humans don’t know, maybe the dragons know about the sword’s matters. Although he doesn’t know dragons nowadays in the Sixth Era, if he could meet Fiona again, Fiona might provide some insights.
"Also, that kind of glimmer used by the Light Worshipper Training Association you mentioned last time that can melt matter, I found out about it."
While Shard was pondering, Miss Danester said again:
"This investigation revealed a major problem."
The document bag on the table flew towards Shard, automatically opening and presenting multiple files and photos before Shard:
"Where to start... You might have heard, from a few hundred years ago, there’s been repeated tales of bodies spontaneously combusting under the sun."
"Yes, I’ve heard. Even records from those older Eras mention one or two similar cases, but there are many bizarre happenings in the Material World, whether it’s true or not is unknown, even if true, it’s difficult to explain it clearly."
As Shard read the materials, the librarian reminded:
"These are not rumors, but mutations of glimmers. For unexplained reasons as of yet, in an extremely rare probability, the seemingly harmless glimmers around us can assimilate any objects that touch the glimmers into light."
