Chapter 533: Mark IV Sovereign Suppression Arrays [Bonus Chapter]
The King leaned forward with his heavy star-iron signet ring dragging a hollow line across the polished white marble.
"Specifically," the King said, his voice dropping into that deep tone that resonated directly within the ribcages of every delegate in the room, "the operational status of the regional Suppression Engines..."
The shift in the room was instantaneous as the courtly paranoia and petty bloodline jealousies evaporated, replaced by the cold survival-driven tension of nine nations facing the reality of their own crumbling borders.
Every leader at the Grand Table understood the architecture of the civilized world.
The primary Suppression Engine... the titanic ancestral anchor that stabilized the dimensional fabric of the entire globe existed in a classified sector whose coordinates were known to nobody alive except the King himself.
But beneath the bedrock of each of the Nine Major Powers lay an immense regional sub-engine, buried leagues beneath the continental crust.
Those nine colossal machines ran continuously, humming day and night, pumping harmonic stabilization frequencies through the planet to keep the Sovereign Realm’s chaotic spatial tides from breaching the crust and drowning humanity in horrors.
Without those nine sub-engines running at full operational capacity, the planar gates would collapse inward, tearing the countries apart from the mantle up.
Yet, keeping them running was an economic and military nightmare.
Over the past four decades, merchant syndicates, ruling oligarchs, and state-backed guilds had grown dependent on anti-suppression dampeners... obscenely expensive technological counter-arrays capable of temporarily neutralizing an engine’s harmonic field over a tight sector.
The mechanism was simple which was by temporarily cutting off the suppression waves over a specific valley or ocean trench, influential factions capable of buying the hardware could artificially pry open controlled gates directly into the Sovereign Realm.
Through those artificial gates flowed the lifeblood of the global economy... high-tier beast cores, refined ether, mineral ores, and alchemical marrow.
It was an endless multibillion-credit engine of greed and the friction from thousands of unsanctioned mining gates cycling open and closed every fiscal quarter was slowly grinding the ancient planetary machinery into scrap.
Prime Minister Sir Arthur Pendelton of the Albion Concordat leaned forward first.
The silver-haired statesman rested both hands on his cane with the polished star-iron orb on its pommel clicking against the table’s beveled edge.
His pale hawk-like face was lined with deep exhaustion and his tailored navy three-piece suit remained uncreased despite the humidity that had spiked after the kinetic display.
"Your Imperial Majesty," Pendelton began, his voice carrying the clipped precision of the western administrative houses. "Albion must place a formal urgent grievance upon the docket... Over the past four quarters, the seismic monitoring arrays stationed along our Channel trench have recorded an eight-point-four percent harmonic drift in the regional sub-engine’s core frequency so the dampening field is no longer uniform and it fluctuates during peak lunar tides."
Beside him, Chancellor Henri de Montmirail of Europa adjusted his wire-rimmed spectacles, tapping his terminal to project a rotating volumetric wireframe of his own stats into the air between them.
"Europa’s geodetic networks corroborate the Albion data, Majesty," Montmirail stated. "The Alpine faultline sub-engine is exhibiting identical symptoms... The harmonic resonance is slipping by nearly nine cycles per minute during heavy gate cycles. These sub-engines were constructed by the ancestral architects centuries ago and they were engineered to endure, yes... built with the assumption that their internal power would last forever but they were never designed to withstand the violent spatial backwash caused by hundreds of private industrial syndicates activating synthetic anti-suppression dampeners every single day."
Montmirail looked up through his lenses with his gaze sweeping across the other rulers.
"The structural cooling channels within the sub-engines are calcifying and hey require an immediate maintenance overhaul."
The chamber erupted into an immediate tense rustle of shuffling parchment, muttered arguments, and shifting boots.
Several delegates from the secondary tiers exchanged skeptical defensive looks.
Questioning the integrity of the ancestral machines was always dangerous... it bordered on suggesting that the royal bloodline’s foundational craftsmanship was flawed.
President Julian Vanderbilt Senior of Columbia scowled, his broad heavy shoulders bunching against his charcoal pinstripe suit.
He slammed both palms onto the table with the signet rings on his thick fingers clicking sharply against the stone.
"An immediate maintenance overhaul?!" Vanderbilt barked, his iron-gray hair catching the harsh downlight. "Do you have any concept of the industrial fallout, Henri? You speak like an academic who has never had to balance a national power grid! If you take a regional sub-engine offline for maintenance... even with secondary stabilization grids, you have to sever every commercial rift gate within six hundred leagues! Half the manufacturing foundries in Columbia depend entirely on raw core imports from the western basins! Indirectly, you would trigger an immediate catastrophic energy depression across three continents!"
"And what happens if an engine suffers an uncontained harmonic rupture, Julian?!" Pendelton countered sharply, his voice cutting through Vanderbilt’s bluster like a razor.
The silver-haired Prime Minister leaned over his cane with his eyes blazing.
"They need to be checked for the safety of the world! Do you think your quarterly manufacturing quotas will matter if the Alpine sub-engine fractures?! Even if a single country experiences an uncontrolled outbreak, the loss of human lives would be simply too catastrophic to count! A breach of that magnitude would bleed across the shared continental faultlines, triggering chain-reaction failures in the neighboring grids! We would be burying entire metropolitan sectors under concrete and artillery within seventy-two hours..."
The argument hung in the air...
Pendelton was right, and every leader at the table knew it.
The economic disruption of an engine shutdown was terrifying, but the alternative was planetary extinction.
The King didn’t interject as he sat back with his arm still resting loosely behind Kiera’s back, listening to the two statesmen bicker with the detached unhurried patience of a ruler who already held the ledger.
He raised his right forefinger by half an inch.
TAP!
The stone rang and the room fell instantly silent.
"The Prime Minister makes a valid point," the King said. "The ancestral machines were built for a different world. My forebears did not anticipate an era where private mining cartels would run hundreds of anti-suppression dampeners concurrently to maximize quarterly ether yields... The wear on the harmonic crystals are real."
A visible wave of relief washed over Pendelton and Montmirail with their shoulders dropping slightly.
"Therefore," the King continued, sweeping his sapphire gaze across the nine rulers, "the Crown will intervene. I shall assemble an imperial delegation of Royal Engineers... technicians trained exclusively in the ancestral architectural styles and harmonic frequencies and dispatch them across the Nine Major Powers to perform harmonic recalibrations on every regional sub-engine."
He paused, his eyes narrowing to cold slits.
"However... recalibration is merely a stopgap, a temporary patch on an aging foundation if you will. To permanently resolve the structural degradation of the world, the Crown has not remained idle."
The King reached forward, tapping a series of complex runes directly onto the celestial marble surface of the Grand Table.
HUMMMMMM!
The center of the ring lit up with a brilliant flash of cyan light as the wireframe of the old continental engines dissolved, replaced by a massive intricately detailed three-dimensional holographic schematic that expanded until it filled the center of the pit.
It was a titanic multi-tiered monolith of void-iron and star-iron conduits, wrapped in concentric interlocking rings of compressed mana-crystals that pulsed with an oceanic blue glow.
It was vast and terrifyingly complex... an inverted fortress designed to be driven directly into the molten mantle of the earth.
A collective gasp swept through the mezzanine galleries as the technical advisors and guild scribes leaned forward, scrambling to record this.
"For the past decade, working under my personal design directives and utilizing the proprietary archives of the Throne, the Royal Engineers have been fabricating the next generation of planetary dampeners," the King announced. "The Mark IV Sovereign Suppression Arrays."
The leaders of the Nine Nations stared at the blue schematic in stunned silence.
"These units," the King explained, his hand tracing the outer rotation of the crystalline containment rings, "utilize an active harmonic compression spell... Rather than passively dampening spatial turbulence through raw suppression, the Mark IV actively absorbs the dimensional friction bleeding from the Sovereign Realm, refining it into ultra-dense stable ether currents that can be channeled directly into continental defense grids or stored in national reserves. They are vast and their structural footprint is four times the scale of the ancestral models but they will soon be ready... perhaps within a year or two."
He withdrew his hand, resting it flat on the table once more.
"However... because of their scale and the unprecedented pressure of their compression chambers, the Mark IV cannot be calibrated in a controlled laboratory environment. It requires live real-world deployment over an active country."
The King’s sapphire eyes swept slowly across the nine rulers, lingering on each of their faces.
"The Crown requires a nation to volunteer its soil for the initial prototype testing phase."
The Great Assembly Chamber went dead quiet.
Volunteer your own land?
Every president, king, and governor in the room immediately began running the brutal calculations.
If the Mark IV functioned as the King promised, whichever nation hosted the prototype would instantly become the most fortified energy-abundant superpower on the globe, completely immune to the spatial decay threatening the rest of the world.
But if the prototype suffered a containment collapse during its initial core ignition cycle... the resulting spatial implosion would tear through the tectonic crust, vaporizing an entire province into the void.
Before Grand Tsar Volkov of Borealis could weigh the risks, and before King Zhao of Shogya could consult his diviners, a voice rang out with sharp finality.
"The Federal Union of Amazonia volunteers."
Every eye in the amphitheater snapped toward High Marshal-President Valeria Da Silva.
The Amazonian leader sat tall with her posture rigid as an iron pike and her feline dark eyes locked straight onto the King without a single flicker of hesitation.
The jagged scar running down her neck caught the blue light of the holographic engine.
"The Amazonian river basin contains the densest and most volatile rift clusters on the globe," Da Silva stated, her commanding voice cutting clean through the chamber’s silence. "Our soil is already saturated with mana from the Sovereign Realm so if your Mark IV array can hold the line beneath the canopy of our southern trenches, it can hold anywhere on Earth... Amazonia will provide the testing ground, the raw labor, and the military perimeter defense so we would be happy to assist the Crown."
Aki watched the Amazonian president from her low-tier seat with her eyes narrowing slightly.
’Smart woman,’ Aki analyzed ruthlessly, feeling the cold logic behind the move. ’She just watched Father erase one of her honor guards without lifting a finger and her delegation was on the verge of diplomatic isolation. She knew her standing with the Crown took a direct hit... Volunteering for the prototype is a much better way to get back on the good side of the King. She wipes away the stain of her dead soldier, eliminates the King’s displeasure, and positions Amazonia at the front of the line for imperial engineering priority. A ruthless gamble indeed.’
The King’s mouth curved into a slow approving smile.
The residual coldness in his sapphire eyes receded, replaced by the satisfaction of a ruler whose bait had been taken instantly.
"Decisive as always, High Marshal," the King nodded, his tone carrying genuine warmth. "The Crown accepts the volunteer petition of the Federal Union of Amazonia... We shall continue the operational discussions regarding the deployment protocols and testing schedules at a later time."
Da Silva placed her right fist over her heart, dipping her chin three inches.
"Amazonia thanks the Sovereign."
With the foundational matters settled and the prototype allocated, the King shifted his posture slightly.
Princess Kiera remained poised upon his lap, adjusting her skirts with quiet grace, her golden eyes watching the room with that same serene untouchable poise.
The King turned his attention toward the secondary tier of the Grand Table, where the two outside noble titans sat in their tailored finery.
"Now," the King said. "Let us address our two newest additions to the table. Patriarch Sterling and Matriarch Bloom... Your reputations precede you."
Lohan Sterling stood immediately.
He didn’t hesitate for a fraction of a second.
The Patriarch of the Sterling Financial Conglomerate stepped forward, his silver robes shimmering under the white overhead lamps like polished mercury, his long fingers adjusting the cuffs of his embroidered sleeves as he offered a flawless bow from the waist.
Like Kiera, it was neither too low to appear subservient and nor too stiff to seem insolent.
’Tch... so this bastard has a bit of sense after all.’ Etilga thought.
"House Sterling is profoundly honored by the gracious invitation of the World Council and the Throne," Lohan said.
He didn’t waste time with flowery imperial poetry or theatrical humility as he handled his business with cold executive perfection.
Nobody wanted to listen to the other ramble on and on... All that paid off was action at the end of the day!
With a flick of his signet ring, he transmitted an encrypted financial ledger into the center of the ring, projecting a sleek silver holographic interface into the air before the heads of state.
"We come before this assembly with a comprehensive business prospect," Lohan continued, his sharp eyes sweeping across the gathered rulers. "Currently, the logistical pipeline supporting the northern perimeter defense is bleeding twenty-eight percent of its operating capital on transport tariffs, incompatible ammunition gauges, and fragmented supply chains split across six different private contractors... Why?.. Because the northern frontier relies on outdated, disparate manufacturing standards that fail under sustained sub-zero mana combat."
He tapped a sequence of keys on his terminal, highlighting the northern rail networks in bright amber.
"The Sterling Financial Conglomerate," Lohan proposed, his voice smooth as warmed oil, "is prepared to fully underwrite the construction of ten automated heavy-munitions foundries directly along the northern railway corridor. We will standardize all artillery, mana-core casings, and void-iron penetrators to the military standard, cutting replenishment times by sixty percent."
He paused, letting the numbers sink into the minds of the military ministers before delivering his terms.
"In exchange, House Sterling requests an exclusive fifteen-year procurement concession for all raw titanium and unrefined void-iron deposits extracted from the newly stabilized northern trench sectors."
President Julian Vanderbilt Senior’s face darkened instantly.
The Columbian corporate titan leaned forward, opening his mouth to vehemently contest the concession on behalf of his own domestic defense contractors—
THUD!
Grand Tsar Nikolai Volkov of Borealis slammed his massive bear-like fist onto the celestial marble!
