Chapter 477: Hive Of Shapeshifters [Bonus Chapter]
Within minutes, the vast chamber of Mine BVR Star was filled with the hypnotic music of industry.
Tink! Tink! Tink!
The sounds were crisp and precise.
The veterans, having practiced the technique from the last couple of women who mined, worked with fluid mesmerizing grace.
Slabs of dark basalt cleaved cleanly away from the veins, tumbling down to be broken into manageable chunks and hauled over to the grounded golem.
The recruits struggled at first, their swings occasionally hitting too heavy or missing the fault lines, but under Durna’s sharp barking instruction, they quickly found the rhythm.
Sweat began to sheen across their exposed collarbones and bare shoulders, glistening in the soft ambient glow of the Star-Iron.
As the work progressed, the competitive tension melted into a lively infectious rhythm.
"Hey, Lyra!" one of the younger girls called out, heaving a thirty-pound chunk of glittering midnight-blue rock into the golem’s side bin with a dull thud. "That’s three loads for me! If you keep babying that chisel, the Lord is going to be rewarding me long before you even wash the dust off your face!"
"In your dreams, rookie!" Lyra shot back, swinging her pickaxe with a clean tink that dropped a massive slab of basalt. "The Lord likes women who know how to handle heavy tools with endurance! You’ll be crying for a water break before midday!"
"Oh, please!" another recruit chimed in, wiping her sweaty forehead with the back of a leather-gloved forearm, her chest heaving against her harness. "Neither of you has a chance! Did you see the way he looked at all of us during the morning briefing? He wants someone who can keep up with him in the field and in the sheets! I’m mining ten carts today if it kills me!"
From her position at the mobile workstation mounted near the golem’s primary manifold, Durna let out a hacking laugh, furiously scribbling weights and names into her vellum ledger.
"Keep flapping those gums, girls!" Durna yelled over the chime of the picks. "The more you argue, the faster you swing! At this rate, we’ll fill the chassis before the noon bells ring in the Keep!"
Down at the far end of the chamber, an older veteran with a clear melodic voice suddenly began to hum a rhythmic low-tempo marching tune.
Within seconds, she put words to the beat... a rough spirited work-song about bleeding in the snow, serving the black banner of Blessed Land, and coming home to the warm hearth of their Lord.
One by one, the other women picked up the melody.
Their voices rose together, blending into a rich, echoing chorus that filled the cavern vault, turning the grueling labor into an exhilarating unified celebration of strength.
Tink! Tink! Clang!
Every strike landed on the beat of the song.
The Phase 2 Golem remained resting on its belly, its massive alloy bins steadily filling with heaps of glittering constellation-flecked ore, unharmed by the careful deliberate loading.
Tasmin stood near the eastern wall, watching the squad with a satisfied smile.
She had already put in thirty minutes of heavy labor herself.
Utilizing her native shadow-affinity, she had condensed the darkness around her boots into dense whip-thin tendrils of solidified shadow, using them like auxiliary pry-bars to pop loosened slabs of bedrock away from the deep veins with effortless efficiency.
Her personal bin on the golem was already piled high with high-grade Star-Iron.
’It’s good work,’ Tasmin thought, looking at the glowing blue ore reflecting in the sweat on her arms. ’Clean yield and fast extraction... My Lord will certainly be pleased with the ledger.’
She lowered her pickaxe, leaning the heavy steel head against the cavern floor.
Her amber eyes narrowed as a dark frustration bubbled beneath the surface.
’...But it’s not enough.’
Mining a few hundred pounds of Star-Iron was standard duty.
Every girl in this room was doing it... Even if she broke the squad record and hauled five carts back to the Sovereign Distribution Nexus, it wouldn’t set her apart.
It wouldn’t make Silas look at her with that sudden electrifying intensity.
It wouldn’t earn her the right to kneel in his private office, to look up into those piercing blue eyes, and to have his hands tangled in her hair while she took him into her mouth.
To get that kind of recognition from her Lord, a woman had to bring him something extraordinary.
...A breakthrough or an eliminated threat.
Tasmin stepped away from the active rock face as she casually tossed her pickaxe aside, letting the tool clatter against a pile of discarded basalt rubble.
"Take a breather, Captain?" Durna called out from the golem, looking up from her vellum ledger.
"I’m going to run a perimeter sweep along the deeper fissures," Tasmin replied, her voice cool and authoritative as she adjusted the leather harness across her chest. "Keep the rhythm going, but keep your ears open... Watch the cavern mouth for any monsters that might catch our scent. You’ve got five veteran blades on the floor, so I’m not worried, but don’t get sloppy."
"Understood," Durna nodded, returning to her notes. "Don’t wander too deep... These basalt formations can run for miles."
Tasmin gave a dismissive wave and turned toward the far shadowed eastern wall of the cavern, well away from the torchlight and the singing recruits.
She approached a massive irregular fissure where the bedrock had buckled inward centuries ago.
The ceiling dropped low here, casting deep ink-black shadows across the rubble. Tasmin closed her eyes, exhaling a slow breath as she extended her shadow perception.
Her internal mana surged but she didn’t push her senses outward like an elemental mage... she sank them downward, letting her consciousness bleed into the literal shadows pooling across the stone floor.
To Tasmin, darkness was not an absence of light but rather an interconnected liquid web that touched every crack, every seam, and every hidden void in the world.
Almost immediately, her perception hit an anomaly.
’...What is that?’
Directly ahead, resting against the lowest section of the wall where the floor met the bedrock, was a colossal rounded boulder roughly nine feet wide.
To the naked eye, it appeared to be a solid, impassable wall of fallen granite.
But through the liquid lens of her shadow-sense, Tasmin felt the gap.
There was a continuous hollow draft seeping around the jagged perimeter of the boulder as the stone wasn’t an integral part of the mountain but rather a plug.
It had been wedged into an existing passage.
More importantly, brushing against the fringes of her mana from the other side of that stone plug was a distinct sickening spiritual signature.
It was a foreign greasy mana carrying the unmistakable rotten stench of a monster she hated.
’Monsters,’ Tasmin thought, her eyes snapping open as her amber pupils narrowed into vertical slits. ’Right on the other side of our perimeter wall.’
She didn’t call for the squad as instead, Tasmin stepped directly into the darkness pooling beneath the overhang.
Her physical body dissolved, melting into pure liquid blackness with a soundless shhhk.
She became a shadow.
Frictionless, weightless, and entirely two-dimensional, Tasmin glided across the stone, sliding effortlessly into the narrow half-inch gap between the massive boulder and the bedrock wall.
Behind her, a couple of the recruits paused their singing for a second, glancing over at the empty space where their captain had just been standing.
"Captain just went into the shadows," the young chestnut-haired girl noted, blinking at the dark wall.
"Good," Lyra smirked, swinging her pickaxe with a clean tink. "That means she’s not hauling ore. More quota for the rest of us! Keep swinging, girls, the Lord’s reward is practically mine!"
On the other side of the boulder, Tasmin emerged from the narrow seam, reconstituting her shadow against the floor of a new subterranean world.
’What the actual fuck...’ Tasmin thought, her mind reeling as she took in the layout.
This wasn’t a simple cave pocket.
Behind the stone plug lay a colossal descending subterranean fracture system that stretched far deeper into the mountain roots than Mine BVR Star ever did.
The stone here was jagged, black, and slick with a foul-smelling translucent slime.
The boulder that sealed the entrance had been deliberately placed... if someone stood on the outside and moved the rock even an inch, they would find only narrow fist-sized crevices resembling crude eyeholes, carved specifically to allow something inside to peer out into the mining chamber without being seen.
It was an observation blind.
Tasmin didn’t linger as she remained in her liquid shadow state, flowing across the wet stone floor like spilled ink, completely silent as she descended the winding passage.
She hadn’t traveled thirty yards down the dark tunnel before her senses screamed...
A figure was slinking up the incline, moving directly toward the boulder plug.
Tasmin paused her drift, flattening herself into the seam between the floor and the wall.
The creature was walking on two legs.
It possessed the silhouette of an ordinary human... in fact, it wore the rough linen trousers and laced boots of a Blessed Land frontier scout.
But as it stepped beneath a patch of bioluminescent moss clinging to the ceiling, the truth was laid bare.
The skin was too tight and the joints moved with a jerky, unnatural elasticity, like meat being puppeted by invisible wires.
And most damning of all: as the creature passed directly beneath the glowing moss, the floor beneath its boots remained completely illuminated.
It cast no shadow.
’A shapeshifting wolf...’ Tasmin thought, a cold violent revulsion rippling through her core.
Tasmin and the others had went into deliberation, again it was still very crazy that these monsters could see your face once and copy it and not only that but it seemed like they could access surface memories too.
They didn’t seem all that strong but still... Tasmin wanted nothing more than to slaughter all of them.
The creature was sniffing the air, its nostrils flaring as it caught the faint scent of sweat and female laughter bleeding through the eyeholes of the boulder ahead.
It bared its teeth, revealing a double row of serrated, needle-thin wolf fangs behind a human mouth as it was heading straight for her squad.
’Tch.’
From within the deep blackness of the floor, Tasmin struck.
She didn’t manifest nor did she give the abomination a single second to comprehend its death.
FZZZZT-SHKLK!
Four massive pitch-black Shadow Spikes violently erupted directly from the floorboards beneath the creature’s feet.
The solid spear-like constructs tore through the beast’s knees, impaling its thighs and driving straight upward through its torso, lifting the creature bodily off the ground.
Before it could emit even a muffled hiss, a fifth spike shot from the wall, punching cleanly through the base of its skull and pinning its head to the jagged basalt with a wet splintering crunch.
Black foul-smelling ichor hissed against the stone.
The creature’s human flesh melted away in death, dissolving into the mangled, mangy gray fur of a six-foot wolf but Tasmin didn’t even pause to watch it die.
She disengaged her mana, leaving the carcass pinned like a butterfly to the rock, and surged downward through the descending tunnel.
It was a long steep dive.
The fissure plunged hundreds of feet into the subterranean bedrock, twisting and turning through ancient vents.
As she neared the lower terminus, a diffuse illumination began to wash over the dark stone.
’Light?’ Tasmin wondered with her shadow-form accelerating. ’This deep underground?’
The narrow tunnel abruptly ended.
Tasmin’s shadow shot out into the open air for a fraction of a second before her instincts kicked in.
She snapped her mana upward, shooting like a streak of black lightning across thirty feet of empty space and anchoring herself seamlessly into the dense pitch-black shadows blanketing the cavern ceiling.
She clung there, perfectly flat, looking down at the horror below and the cavern was colossal.
It was a hollow that dwarfed even the central plaza of Blessed Land.
The ceiling vaulted nearly eighty feet overhead, but the most striking feature was a colossal fissure in the high stone roof... a natural skylight that opened directly to the surface of the Umbral Basin.
Through that massive hole, the iron-gray daylight of the morning bled downward, accompanied by a swirling drift of pale white snow that fluttered silently through the freezing draft.
Beneath that falling snow lay an entire civilization of nightmares.
It was a massive, thriving hive of the shapeshifting beasts.
Hundreds of them were moving across the cavern floor.
Some prowled in their native wolf forms but dozens of others were walking on two legs, wearing the stolen faces of human beings.
Tasmin’s breath caught in her throat, a cold suffocating fury seizing her chest.
’I fucking hate them...’
They had even constructed crude makeshift dwellings out of shattered bedrock, frozen timber, and the gnawed ribcages of massive basin megafauna.
And in the center of the cavern, bathed directly in the beam of daylight and falling snow, sat the alpha.
It was an enormous four-armed abomination, twice the size of a standard wolf, its flesh shifting constantly between scarred human muscle and dense armored wolf hide.
A suffocating oppressive aura of high-tier corrupted mana bled from its body, sending ripples through the cold air.
’It’s Tier 3, huh...? Maybe even beyond that...’
