Chapter 245: The Fools’ Gambit, A Desperate Coalition

  • Next Chapter

The news of the Level 5 Guild Citadel spread across the Zenith Protocol like a localized wildfire.

While Dante was busy finalizing the administrative layouts of the massive new fortress with Sera, the global forums were completely melting down. The system automatically broadcasted the establishment of the [Citadel of the First Cycle] to the entire server, highlighting its unprecedented Level 5 status and its location deep within the Sky Demon Forest.

Miles away, the remnants of the Sakura Nation’s Black Dragon Syndicate and Oakhaven’s Apex Coalition received the notification.

Their armies were shattered. Ryujin had been repeatedly humiliated and executed. Gawain had watched his elite magical artillery get sucked into a black hole. They were currently nursing their bruised egos and rapidly depleting treasuries in a temporary safe camp near the edge of the forest.

When the notification hit, the two Guild Masters met in the center of the camp.

"He built a Level 5 Citadel," Ryujin hissed, his crimson samurai armor heavily dented. "On day one. That requires millions of raw resources and billions of gold coins. He must have completely drained his localized treasury to pull it off."

"And his stamina," Gawain added, his massive golden warhammer resting heavily on the dirt. The Paladin Guild Master looked exhausted. "He dropped meteors, teleported continuously, and fought a Celestial boss. Even an anomaly has a resource limit. If he just spent his remaining energy securing that foundation, he has to be mathematically vulnerable."

The logic was flawed, built entirely on standard game mechanics that didn’t apply to [Chrono-Shift], but it was the only logic they had left.

"Silas is gone," Ryujin noted coldly. "Vanguard’s Legacy is bankrupt and Leaderless. It’s just us."

"We combine our surviving forces," Gawain decided, gripping his hammer. "We have twenty thousand players left. They are demoralized, but they are still heavily armored veterans. We march on his new coordinates. We siege the Citadel before the automated defenses fully render."

Ryujin nodded, a desperate, greedy light returning to his eyes. "If we breach the gates and destroy the guild core, the Citadel shatters. All the high-tier loot he hoarded inside will scatter across the zone. We can salvage the entire cycle."

They didn’t waste time resting. They roused the twenty thousand surviving players.

The promise of revenge, combined with the prospect of looting a Level 5 guildhall, was enough to override their lingering terror. The desperate coalition formed up and began marching through the dark, corrupted trees of the Sky Demon Forest, heading straight for the massive new fortress.

Inside the pristine courtyard of the Citadel of the First Cycle, the atmosphere was entirely relaxed.

Dante wasn’t pacing nervously. He wasn’t barking orders.

He was standing near the central guild monument, adjusting his dark purple gauntlets.

"I need to go," Dante announced to his squad.

"Go where?" Lila asked, pausing her conversation with Zephyr. "Sera said an army is marching right at us."

"I know," Dante said smoothly. "But I have a pending Class Advancement quest I need to finish in the Path of Gods and Demons. The Citadel is secure. You guys can handle the defense while I’m gone."

"You want us to hold off twenty thousand players by ourselves?" Casanova squawked, nearly dropping his digital goblet of wine. "Boss, Garrick’s shield is great, but twenty thousand players will eventually chip through his emotional trauma!"

"You aren’t fighting them," Sera interrupted, not looking up from her administrative console. The studio head was casually scrolling through a list of localized defense upgrades. "Dante is right. The Citadel is secure. You can go, Dante."

Dante smiled, trusting Sera’s business acumen and tactical understanding of the system’s architecture.

"Don’t break the walls," Dante told the squad.

He activated the [Spatial Stone], crushing the dark gray artifact in his gauntlet. The swirling vortex of spatial energy swallowed him, instantly transporting him back to the forbidden zone, leaving the squad alone in the massive fortress.

"He really just left," Mei laughed, balancing her massive frying pan on her shoulder. "Okay. So, what’s the plan, Sera? Do we stand on the walls and throw rocks at them?"

"We don’t do anything," Sera smiled. It was a cold, incredibly confident smile.

She turned away from the console and walked toward the massive, sweeping obsidian staircase that led up to the primary battlements overlooking the front gates.

"Come on," Sera gestured for the squad to follow her. "We have a show to watch."

Lila, Mei, Casanova, Nyx, and Garrick followed her up the stairs.

They reached the top of the battlements. The view was incredible. The Citadel walls were hundreds of feet high, offering a perfect, unobstructed view of the dark, dense tree line of the Sky Demon Forest.

Lining the battlements, spaced perfectly every ten feet, were massive, automated magical ballistas. They weren’t manned by NPC guards. They were completely self-sufficient, tied directly to the Citadel’s core energy grid.

"Here they come," Nyx murmured, adjusting her dark glasses.

The dark tree line violently shifted.

The twenty-thousand-man coalition of the Black Dragon Syndicate and the Apex Coalition marched out of the forest. They formed massive, overlapping shield walls, deploying their heavy siege equipment at the rear.

Gawain and Ryujin rode at the front, their armor gleaming in the dim light.

They halted the army about five hundred yards away from the massive, impenetrable obsidian gates of the Citadel.

"It’s huge," a Sakura Nation rogue whispered, staring up at the towering walls.

"Focus!" Ryujin roared, drawing his katana. "He blew his treasury building it! The defenses won’t be fully active! Mages, prepare the bombardment arrays! Target the main gate!"

Up on the walls, Casanova leaned over the edge, looking down at the massive army.

"Should I yell something insulting at them?" Casanova asked eagerly.

"No," Sera said, crossing her arms. "Just watch."

Gawain raised his golden warhammer, signaling the vanguard to advance.

"For Oakhaven! For the Sakura Nation! Breach the gates!" Gawain bellowed.

The twenty-thousand-man coalition charged.

They poured out of the dark tree line of the Sky Demon Forest, a massive, uncoordinated wave of gold, white, and crimson tabards. They were desperate. They had lost their primary armies, their Guild Masters had been humiliated, and they believed this was their absolute last chance to salvage the cycle.

They saw the towering, massive obsidian walls of the Citadel of the First Cycle. They saw the heavy iron gates.

They didn’t see Dante.

"The anomaly isn’t on the walls!" Ryujin roared, riding near the front of the Sakura Nation forces. The Guild Master’s premium samurai armor clanked loudly. "He exhausted his resources building this fortress! The defenses won’t be fully calibrated! Push the gates!"

Gawain, leading the Apex Coalition, raised his massive golden warhammer. "For Oakhaven! Break the foundation! We take his treasury!"

The combined army surged forward, abandoning complex formations in favor of a massive, overwhelming zerg-rush. Thousands of heavy tanks raised their shields, preparing to absorb the initial volley of automated defensive fire, while the mages in the backline began chanting hastily constructed siege spells.

Up on the high battlements of the Citadel, Sera stood with her arms crossed.

Lila, Mei, Casanova, Nyx, and Garrick stood beside her. None of them had their weapons drawn. Garrick wasn’t even trying to activate his [Spiteful Bulwark].

They were just watching.

"Shouldn’t we do something?" Casanova asked nervously, gripping the stone edge of the battlement. "There are twenty thousand of them. If they hit the doors with enough overlapping magic, they might actually breach the hinge code."

"They won’t reach the doors," Sera said smoothly. Her business facade was perfectly intact, projecting an aura of absolute, terrifying confidence.

Down in the field, the vanguard of the coalition crossed the invisible perimeter line that marked the Citadel’s localized defense zone.

The system AI governing the fortress didn’t issue a warning prompt. It didn’t sound an alarm.

It simply executed its hard-coded defensive protocols.

When Dante had slammed [Voidsever] into the foundation stone to bypass the Arch-Administrator’s building block, he hadn’t just removed a system error. The primordial greatsword had actively fed its own underlying, anti-virus code into the architectural generation of the Citadel. The fortress wasn’t just built on a massive mana nexus. It was built on the foundation of the Asura.

The massive, automated magical ballistas lining the battlements didn’t load standard iron bolts or explosive fireballs.

The heavy, complex mechanisms loudly hummed. They began to glow with an intense, aggressive, blinding white light. The air around the ballistas actively distorted, pulling ambient mana from the nexus below to fuel the ammunition.

"Incoming!" a Vanguard’s Legacy lieutenant screamed from the front line, spotting the glowing turrets. "Shields up! Brace for impact!"

The thousands of heavy tanks locked their tower shields together, bracing their boots in the dirt, fully expecting to mitigate the physical impact of the defensive fire.

*BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!*

The ballistas fired simultaneously.

They didn’t fire solid projectiles. Massive, concentrated beams of pure, white-hot deletion code shot down from the walls, completely illuminating the dark edge of the forest. The beams swept across the charging army in wide, devastating horizontal arcs.

The beams didn’t just deal damage. Because the automated defenses inherited the base code of Dante’s avatar during construction, they also inherited the passives of the [Asura Vanguard] class and his primordial weapon.

[Passive Activated: Absolute Severance. 100% Armor Ignored.]

The heavy tower shields and thick breastplates of the vanguard completely failed to mitigate the blasts. The defensive stats were mathematically rendered void. The white beams sheared cleanly through the dense formations, treating the heavily armored tanks exactly the same as unarmored beginners.

Hundreds of players were instantly vaporized in the first pass. Their health bars zeroed out before the system interface could even render the damage numbers.

But it wasn’t just the sheer, unmitigated damage that broke the coalition.

[Class Passive Triggered: 200% Simulated Pain Feedback.]

The twenty thousand players didn’t just watch their health bars vanish. The systemic pain receptors, normally capped by the Zenith Protocol to prevent real-world trauma, aggressively spiked.

The entire front line of the coalition army violently collapsed.

They didn’t roar in defiance. They screamed in genuine, unfiltered agony as the localized code actively burned their digital avatars. The simulated pain was absolute, completely overriding their ability to focus on the game mechanics.

Players dropped their weapons, clutching their heads and chests, writhing in the dirt as the white beams swept back and forth across the battlefield.

"What is that?!" Ryujin shrieked, his armored horse bucking wildly in panic as a white beam carved a deep, smoking trench into the dirt just inches from his boots. "Those aren’t standard defenses! They’re ignoring armor! The pain modifiers are broken!"

Gawain stared in absolute horror as his elite Apex Coalition paladins were literally atomized by the automated turrets, their agonizing screams echoing over the roaring of the ballistas.

"He’s torturing them!" Gawain yelled, completely losing his nerve. "The anomaly built a torture chamber! Retreat! Fall back out of range! We can’t siege this!"

The army didn’t need the Guild Master’s order.

The horrific screams of their guildmates experiencing the 200% pain feedback completely destroyed their morale. The promise of loot and revenge was instantly overwritten by the visceral, terrifying reality of the Asura’s power.

They broke formation entirely.
