Chapter 233: The Descendants of the Saint, The Emperor’s Puppeteer

  • Next Chapter

The heavy iron gates of the ancestral fortress slammed shut behind Dante, sealing with a resonant, metallic thud.

The courtyard inside was a stark contrast to the chaotic, blood-soaked battlefield he had just left.

It was immaculate, paved with perfectly smooth gray stone, and lined with ancient, meticulously maintained shrines dedicated to the Vanguard of the First Cycle.

Dozens of Beast-Kin warriors were gathered in the courtyard. They weren’t looking at him with the mind-controlled, aggressive green static of the Emperor’s army.

Their eyes were clear, filled with a mixture of profound exhaustion and genuine awe. They had just survived an impossible siege, and the man who broke the army was standing in their courtyard.

Thane, the young panther-kin wearing the polished silver armor, jogged down the stone steps leading from the main keep.

He stopped a few feet away from Dante and offered a deep, respectful bow.

"Outworlder," Thane said, his voice earnest. "I am Thane, grandson of the Blade-Saint. My clan owes you our survival. If you had not arrived when you did, the outer walls would have fallen within the hour."

Dante didn’t bow back. He unclipped the [Mantle of the Void-Dragon], letting the heavy, starry fabric drape casually over his arm, revealing the full glow of his dark purple [Carapace of the Void-Devourer] and the [Zenith Epaulet] on his shoulder.

"I made a promise to your grandfather," Dante stated simply. "I don’t break contracts."

Thane looked at the Epaulet, a sad smile touching his lips. "He spoke highly of the anomaly who refused to bow to the system’s logic. He said you were the only one capable of carrying the true weight of the Vanguard."

"He also said I couldn’t use his class scroll because I was too dense," Dante noted dryly.

Thane chuckled, the sound a low, rumbling purr. "He was always blunt."

Dante crossed his arms. The pleasantries were over. He needed intelligence.

"Silas went to a lot of trouble to put fifty thousand troops on your doorstep," Dante said, his red eyes locking onto the young heir.

"He used admin-level developer tools to mind-control the Beast-Emperor and hijack an entire nation’s military infrastructure. He didn’t do all of that just to wipe out a single, isolated fortress because your grandfather liked players. What is he really looking for?"

Thane’s smile vanished. The young Beast-Kin looked around the courtyard, gesturing for the surrounding guards to fall back and give them privacy.

"You are incredibly perceptive, Dan," Thane whispered, his voice dropping into a serious, guarded register. "The Enforcer did not care about our Outworlder sympathies. That was merely the public justification he fed to the warlords to mobilize the army."

Thane walked toward the center of the courtyard, approaching a large, unassuming stone well. Dante followed him.

"Silas targeted us because my clan are the traditional Keepers of the Lore," Thane explained softly. "We maintain the ancient archives of the First Cycle. He believed we possessed the coordinates to the one artifact capable of cementing his absolute authority over this continent."

Dante’s Intuition stat didn’t ping with danger, but it hummed with the heavy, undeniable weight of deep lore.

"What artifact?" Dante asked.

"The [Primal Earth Core]," Thane stated.

Dante froze.

The name wasn’t just a random lore fragment. It resonated directly with the dark, jagged brand on his right wrist. The black ink flared slightly, pulsing with a faint, greedy heat.

"A Chaos Orb," Dante breathed, realizing exactly what Silas was hunting.

The primordial greatsword, [Voidsever], had originally possessed three core fragments that generated its infinite mass. Dante had recovered the first one, the corrupted orb known as Gluttony, in the Spire of Ascension.

There were two left.

"Yes," Thane confirmed, noticing Dante’s reaction. "It is one of the shattered fragments of the primordial executioner’s blade. My grandfather told me you had recovered the hilt and the first core."

"I did," Dante nodded. "Where is the Earth Core?"

Thane looked down into the dark, empty well.

"It isn’t here," Thane said grimly. "My ancestors knew the Core was too volatile to keep in an isolated fortress. Centuries ago, they transported it to the absolute safest location on the continent."

"Where?" Dante pressed.

"Deep within the royal vaults of Theria, the Beast-Kin capital city," Thane revealed, looking back up at Dante. "It rests directly beneath the Beast-Emperor’s throne, protected by the heaviest magical seals our nation can forge."

Dante processed the tactical nightmare.

"Silas mind-controlled the Beast-Emperor," Dante summarized, the pieces clicking together perfectly. "He didn’t just want an army to hunt me. He needed the Emperor’s administrative clearance to open the royal vaults and bypass the seals."

"Exactly," Thane nodded. "The siege on this fortress was a distraction. Silas needed to keep you occupied and away from the capital while he secured the Core."

Dante felt a cold, sharp spike of genuine concern.

If Silas acquired a Chaos Orb, the systemic implications were terrifying. Silas was an [Enforcer of the Zenith], granted admin privileges by the Arch-Administrator. If he fused developer tools with the raw, primordial energy of a Chaos Orb, his stats wouldn’t just be high; they would be mathematically unbreakable. He could potentially rewrite the server’s core code and permanently delete Aegis Vanguard from the database.

Dante couldn’t let Silas get that orb.

"I need to get to Theria," Dante stated, turning away from the well.

"Dan, you cannot simply march into the capital," Thane warned urgently, grabbing Dante’s arm. "Theria is a massive, heavily fortified metropolis. There are millions of NPC guards, automated anti-air ballistas, and systemic suppression arrays. Even with your power, a frontal assault is suicide."

"I don’t plan on knocking on the front door," Dante said smoothly, shrugging off the grip. "I have stealth."

"Silas anticipated that," Thane countered. "He knows you use anomalies to bypass standard detection. He forced the Beast-Emperor to deploy [True-Sight Totems] across the entire inner city. They are systemic artifacts designed specifically by the Zenith Protocol to aggressively strip Outworlder stealth mechanics. Your cloaks and illusions will fail the moment you cross the inner walls."

Dante stopped.

True-Sight Totems. It was a hard counter to [Veil of the Unseen] and Nyx’s [God of Shadow] class.

Silas was terrified of Dante’s invisibility, so he had leveraged his admin privileges to completely lock down the capital’s detection grid.

"So I can’t sneak in," Dante noted. "And I can’t fight an entire city."

"No," Thane agreed. "But there is a path."

The young panther-kin pulled a small, detailed parchment map from his armor. He unrolled it on the stone rim of the well.

"My clan are the Keepers of the Lore," Thane smiled, a hint of pride in his voice. "We know the old paths. There is a forgotten smuggling tunnel that leads directly from the Scorched Savannah into the sub-basement of the royal vaults. It completely bypasses the outer city and the True-Sight Totems."

Dante looked at the map. The route was treacherous, cutting through some of the highest-level zones on the continent, but it was viable.

"Give me the map," Dante said.

"I am not giving you the map," Thane corrected him, rolling the parchment back up. "I am coming with you. And I am bringing my elite scouts."

Dante frowned. "I work alone."

"You don’t know the terrain," Thane argued firmly. "The Scorched Savannah is a Level 50+ hazard zone. The ambient mechanics change every few hours. If you go in blind, you will get bogged down fighting localized apex predators, and Silas will secure the Core before you even reach the tunnels."

Dante looked at the young Beast-Kin. Thane was Level 48. He wasn’t a fragile beginner. He was a highly trained scout operating in his home territory.

And Dante needed to be fast.

"Fine," Dante agreed. "But we move at my pace. If your scouts fall behind, I’m not stopping to pick them up."

"We won’t fall behind," Thane promised, an eager, determined light burning in his golden eyes.

Thane turned and whistled sharply.

Four Beast-Kin rogues dropped seamlessly from the shadows of the fortress walls, landing silently on the cobblestones behind Thane.

They wore incredibly sleek, lightweight dark leather armor and carried short, curved daggers. They moved with absolute, silent precision.

"These are the Shadow-Stalkers," Thane introduced them. "The finest scouts in the Primal Roar clan. They know the Savannah better than anyone."

"Good," Dante said, equipping the [Dawn-Breaker Blade]. "We leave immediately."

He didn’t need to coordinate with Sera or the rest of Aegis Vanguard. They were safely locked inside the indestructible sanctuary of the Astral Emporium back on the Human continent. Dante’s only objective was to intercept Silas and secure the second piece of Voidsever.

The six-man squad didn’t use the main gates.

Thane led them to a small, hidden postern door at the rear of the fortress, leading out into a dense, rocky ravine that effectively bypassed the retreating remnants of the massive army Dante had just routed.

They moved quickly and silently.

As they marched through the ravine, the system interface abruptly flashed.

It wasn’t a private message or a localized hazard warning.

It was a massive, continent-wide announcement, projected in blazing crimson text across the sky of the Beast-Kin territory.

[ROYAL DECREE: THE BEAST-EMPEROR SPEAKS]

[The Outworlder known as ’Dan’ is officially branded a Cosmic Heretic.]

[All peace treaties are void. A continent-wide manhunt is hereby initiated.]

[Reward for Confirmed Execution: Elevation to Royal Status and Absolute Territorial Authority.]

Dante read the prompt as he walked.

Silas wasn’t just relying on the True-Sight Totems. He was weaponizing the entire population of the continent against a single player.

He was terrified, and he was using his admin privileges to throw everything he had at Dante to buy himself enough time to extract the Chaos Orb.

"A cosmic heretic," Thane whispered, staring at the sky in horror. "Dan, the entire continent is going to be hunting us. Every single clan, every single mercenary group. We are public enemy number one."
