Star Ship Girl Era: My Shipgirls Are Too Overpowered
Chapter 419: The Old Vhaloric System
With the Orison settlement accepted and the ceasefire extended to seven days, Aurelian finally had room to deal with several matters that had been waiting since he arrived at Helion.
The first was his fleet.
The March had grown quickly, but the number of ships directly under his command had not grown at the same pace.
Helion was restoring captured vessels, Larkspur needed patrol coverage, Sanctuary Ardent needed protection, Annex Seven required supply runs, and now Valeris Reach had Rhoswen sitting there with part of Crownward’s mobile strength.
Aurelian had enough ships to defend the territory.
He did not have enough ships to defend everything comfortably.
That difference was becoming harder to ignore.
He left the dining area with Astra and returned to one of Helion’s command rooms. Mirei and Katsura remained behind, while Yelena had already disappeared again to find Meridian.
Aurelian suspected those two would spend the entire visit arguing beside an open machine.
Once he was alone with Astra, he opened the latest Helion recovery list.
Eleven captured or recovered military hulls still waited for long-term decisions.
Most were Compact ships taken during earlier fighting.
Several could be repaired and handed over to local crews.
Two were too badly damaged to be worth restoring and would probably become spare parts.
Three were more interesting.
They were old Vhaloric hulls recovered from hidden Helion storage sections after the bastion awakened.
All three had remained sealed because their command cores were damaged and nobody had wanted to activate military vessels with uncertain control systems while Helion itself was still being stabilized.
That caution had made sense before.
Things were different now.
Aurelian looked at Astra.
"Do you remember these?"
She studied the records.
"The sealed vessels beneath Dock Ring Four."
"Yes."
"Meridian wanted to dismantle one."
"She wants to dismantle everything."
"Only things she considers inefficient."
"That is most things."
Astra’s mouth moved slightly.
Aurelian took that as agreement.
The three vessels were not identical.
One was a heavy cruiser built around an oversized forward weapon system.
Another was a smaller command frigate with unusually powerful sensors and electronic warfare systems.
The third was a damaged carrier whose internal launch bays had partially collapsed.
Aurelian immediately ruled out the carrier.
Repairing it would take months and consume material Helion needed elsewhere.
The cruiser and frigate were another matter.
He opened the Destiny System privately.
Astra continued reading the normal Helion files and showed no reaction.
Aurelian focused on the cruiser first.
The System identified the vessel quickly.
Vhaloric heavy assault cruiser.
Structural integrity: seventy-eight percent.
Command core condition: recoverable.
Awakening compatibility: high.
Combat restoration value: high.
Estimated integration risk: low following authenticated successor command recognition.
Aurelian read the final line twice.
That was useful.
Annex Seven’s recognition of his emergency successor authority had apparently changed more than access to one old station.
Several Vhaloric systems that would once have treated him as an unknown outsider now had a valid path to recognize him.
He checked the frigate.
Its condition was even better.
Structural integrity: eighty-nine percent.
Primary systems: dormant but functional.
Command core condition: stable.
Awakening compatibility: very high.
Specialization: fleet coordination, sensor control, electronic disruption, protected command relay.
That immediately caught his interest.
The March already had powerful ships.
What it lacked was enough specialized support.
Eirenne could process information better than almost anyone in the fleet, especially once the Annex Seven cognition matrix was safely available to her, but Eirenne could not physically be everywhere.
A mobile command ship able to manage sensors, communications, and electronic warfare would be useful even without becoming one of Crownward’s strongest combatants.
Aurelian closed the System.
Astra looked toward him.
"You want to restore them."
"The cruiser and the frigate."
"The carrier?"
"Too expensive."
She nodded.
"Meridian will agree with that."
"That worries me."
"Why?"
"Agreement usually means the problem is obvious."
Astra looked back at the cruiser file.
"These have been dormant for centuries."
"So was Helion."
"That is not an argument in your favor."
"It worked."
"Eventually."
Aurelian sent a message to Meridian.
She answered eleven minutes later.
Yelena was with her.
Of course she was.
Meridian’s projection appeared over the table.
"You found the sealed hull list."
"Yes."
"I was wondering how long that would take."
Aurelian frowned.
"You knew I would ask?"
"You have been increasing fleet strength since I met you."
Yelena glanced toward Meridian.
"She has a point."
Aurelian ignored that.
"Can we restore the assault cruiser?"
Meridian brought up its engineering data.
"Yes."
"How difficult?"
"Not very, by Helion standards. The hull is sound, the reactor is intact, and most internal systems were shut down properly rather than damaged."
"Command core?"
"Damaged."
"Repairable?"
"Probably."
Aurelian looked at her.
"Probably?"
"We haven’t opened the core chamber yet."
Yelena leaned closer to the display.
"If the damage is limited to the outer control lattice, it can be repaired. If the central personality architecture is damaged, we may need to rebuild part of it."
That was the part Aurelian cared about.
These ships were not just empty machines.
If they were compatible with proper awakening, their shipgirls might still exist inside dormant command structures.
He wasn’t interested in forcing damaged cores into service just because he needed more firepower.
"What about the frigate?"
Meridian’s expression changed slightly.
"That one is better."
"How much better?"
"Almost annoyingly better."
Yelena smiled.
"She likes it."
"I said no such thing."
"You called the sensor architecture elegant."
"It is elegant."
Aurelian looked between them.
"Can it be awakened?"
Meridian nodded.
"Most likely."
"Then start with that one."
She seemed surprised.
"Not the cruiser?"
"The frigate is in better condition and gives us something we don’t already have."
Meridian considered that, then nodded.
"Reasonable."
Aurelian leaned back.
"How soon can we inspect the core?"
"We already did."
He stared at her.
Yelena looked away.
Meridian continued as though nothing had happened.
"I expected you to ask eventually, so I opened the outer chamber yesterday."
"You opened a sealed Vhaloric command core without telling me."
"I inspected it."
"That is still opening it."
"It was safe."
"That is what everyone says after something goes well."
Yelena laughed.
Meridian did not.
"The core is intact. It has been waiting for command authentication."
That ended the argument.
Aurelian stood.
"Where?"
"Dock Ring Four."
They went there immediately.
The sealed docks were deeper inside Helion than the modern repair areas. These sections had only recently been restored to regular power, and the walls still bore old Directorate markings that nobody had bothered to replace.
Yelena met them at the access lift.
Meridian was already inside.
The frigate rested behind a transparent armored barrier.
It was much smaller than Black Crown, but still large enough to dominate the entire dock.
Its shape was unusually clean for a Vhaloric warship.
The hull narrowed toward the front instead of carrying heavy armor everywhere, while several long sensor structures ran along its upper spine. The weapon mounts were modest.
This was clearly not a ship designed to win by throwing the most firepower at an enemy.
Aurelian liked that.
It meant somebody had built it for a specific reason.
Meridian stood near the command platform.
"The authentication system is ready."
Astra looked toward Aurelian.
"You should still expect it to reject you."
"Helpful."
"I am being realistic."
Aurelian stepped forward.
The old Vhaloric system activated.
A pale light passed over him.
"Human command claimant detected."
The same old formal tone filled the dock.
Aurelian provided the recognized successor records from Helion and Annex Seven.
The system processed them.
"Helion Bastion Twelve emergency authority confirmed."
A second pause followed.
"Strategic stewardship recognition confirmed."
Meridian looked interested.
That part was new.
Aurelian waited.
"Command succession accepted."
The frigate’s hull lights turned on.
One row at a time.
Power spread through the ship.
The dock remained quiet except for the low vibration of systems waking after centuries of silence.
Yelena stepped closer to the barrier.
"Reactor stable."
Meridian was watching another display.
"Command core is responding."
Aurelian felt the familiar change before the others said anything.
The ship was waking.
Not simply powering on.
Waking.
Light gathered near the command platform.
A Human figure slowly formed inside it.
The woman who appeared looked young, though Aurelian had long since stopped using appearance to guess the age of a shipgirl.
Her hair was dark silver and cut just below her shoulders.
Her clothing was simple by shipgirl standards, mostly dark fabric with pale lines that matched the frigate’s hull lights.
A small set of mechanical structures rested behind her like folded sensor fins.
She opened her eyes.
They were a clear gray.
For several seconds, she looked around the dock without speaking.
Then her attention settled on Aurelian.
"Command authentication is unfamiliar," she said.
Her voice was calm.
"Directorate central command is unavailable."
"Correct," Aurelian replied.
She looked toward Meridian next.
"Helion remains operational."
"It does," Meridian said.
The new shipgirl seemed to process that.
Then she looked back at Aurelian.
"You hold emergency successor authority."
"For now."
"For now," she repeated.
Aurelian appreciated that she did not immediately pretend several centuries had made sense.
"My name is Aurelian Arcturus."
She remained silent for another moment.
Then she placed one hand lightly against her chest.
"Vhaloric command frigate Seraphiel, long-range coordination vessel. Fleet relay, sensor control, signal disruption, and tactical command support."
Aurelian nodded.
"Welcome back."
Seraphiel looked through the armored barrier toward her physical hull.
"How long?"
Yelena answered more gently than Aurelian expected.
"Several centuries."
Seraphiel closed her eyes briefly.
