Star Ship Girl Era: My Shipgirls Are Too Overpowered
Chapter 344: Sanctuary Ardent 4
The first Compact formation had finally restored part of its line, but it had lost several cruisers and more than a dozen escorts. Its ships were now fighting with the sanctuary on one side and Solenne’s fleet on the other.
The second formation was still crossing the station field.
Marshal Orvek Taran watched both battles from his command ship farther outside the system.
He had remained behind with his heavier reserve ships, expecting the two forward formations to surround the sanctuary before he committed his main force.
That plan had seemed reasonable when Sanctuary Ardent was still thought to be under Compact control.
Now every report was worse than the last.
Commander Yarric had been captured.
The demolition network had failed.
The reactor was secure.
Human forces controlled the sanctuary.
Weapons that did not exist on any Compact map were firing from inside the mountain.
Taran did not panic, but he understood the danger.
If he withdrew now, Saevor Drann would lose Sanctuary Ardent, its population, and every secret the Humans found beneath it.
If he pressed forward, he might lose two formations against defenses his officers did not understand.
"What is the condition of the near formation?" he asked.
"Combat strength at seventy-two percent," an officer replied. "Several ships remain operational but have lost most of their shields."
"And the station-field group?"
"Still advancing. Its commander requests another fifteen minutes before the heavy ships can join."
Taran looked at the tactical display.
Fifteen minutes was too long.
The sanctuary’s weapons were already forcing his nearest formation backward. If that group broke before support arrived, the battle would turn into two separate defeats.
"Order the first formation to stop withdrawing," he said. "They will move closer to the Human fleet and force a direct engagement."
The officer hesitated.
"That will place them inside the sanctuary’s firing zone."
"They’re already inside it."
The order was sent.
The Compact commander near the sanctuary understood what Taran wanted. Solenne had used distance and movement to strike his ships while the sanctuary batteries weakened them.
If he moved closer, the old weapons might have more difficulty firing without risking friendly ships.
It would also turn the battle into a direct exchange where numbers mattered more.
He ordered his remaining cruisers forward.
The Compact fleet accelerated into Solenne’s line.
Warnings filled the Dawn Petal’s bridge.
"They’re closing fast," the tactical officer said.
Solenne watched the enemy formation approach.
"Let them."
At long range, Solenne had the advantage of coordination and sanctuary support. At close range, the Compact’s greater number of ships would become more dangerous, but their crowded formation would also become harder to control.
The first Compact cruisers entered direct weapons range.
Both fleets opened fire.
Shields flashed across the front lines as beams and heavy rounds crossed the short distance between them.
Fighters and drones moved through the space between larger ships, striking damaged hulls and forcing point-defense systems to split their attention.
A Compact destroyer passed close to one of Solenne’s cruisers and fired into its weakened side.
The Human cruiser lost its shield, but before the destroyer could turn away, two fighters from the Dawn Petal struck its engines and left it drifting between the fleets.
Another Compact ship forced its way through the front line and tried to reach Solenne’s carrier.
Three of Solenne’s destroyers moved to intercept it. The enemy cruiser fired first, damaging one of them, but the other two crossed behind it and hit the same shield section together.
The cruiser’s side armor broke open.
Solenne’s fleet was taking losses, yet the Compact advance was not clean. Their ships had entered close range without enough room to support one another, and several captains were making separate decisions as the battle changed around them.
Some pushed forward.
Others slowed to protect damaged ships.
A few tried to avoid the sanctuary’s remaining firing lines.
Solenne’s captains did not have that problem. They had trained under her command, and Eirenne was sharing the same battlefield picture with every ship.
"Pull the center back by three thousand kilometers," Solenne ordered. "Keep both wings in place."
The middle of her line retreated.
The Compact ships followed, believing they had opened a path toward the Dawn Petal.
Instead, they entered a wide gap between Solenne’s wings.
"Turn inward."
The ships on both sides changed their firing angles.
The Compact advance suddenly came under attack from three directions. Solenne’s center fired from the front, while the two wings struck the enemy’s exposed sides.
The sanctuary added one more heavy volley.
A Compact command cruiser lost its shield and took a direct hit through the bridge section. The vessel continued drifting forward, but its weapons stopped firing.
The loss spread confusion through the nearby ships.
Solenne did not give them time to recover.
"All groups, push."
Her fleet advanced together.
For several minutes, the battle became a brutal exchange at close range. Damaged ships remained in line until their shields failed, then withdrew behind stronger vessels.
Fighters ran out of missiles and returned to the Dawn Petal to rearm, while drones stayed behind to mark weakened targets.
The Compact fought hard.
Their officers understood that retreating under pressure would expose them to the sanctuary’s weapons again.
Several captains ignored heavy damage and kept firing until their ships could no longer hold position.
One cruiser lost its engines but continued using side thrusters to keep its guns pointed at Solenne’s fleet.
Another placed itself in front of a damaged command ship and absorbed two volleys meant for it.
They were not weak enemies, but their original plan had failed, and every new order was trying to repair a problem created by the last one.
Taran watched the near formation’s strength fall below sixty percent.
At the same time, the second group finally began clearing the station field, but it was no longer in one formation.
Its destroyers and light cruisers were far ahead of the heavier ships, and several vessels had already lost shields to the hidden station defenses.
If he committed his reserves now, he might still force Solenne back.
He might also lose the entire fleet inside the sanctuary’s defensive range.
Taran made his decision.
"Order both formations to disengage."
The command room became quiet.
One officer looked toward him.
"Marshal?"
"We are not recovering the sanctuary today. Pull the station-field group back first. The near formation will cover the withdrawal."
"They’ve already lost too many shields."
"I know."
The order was sent.
Near Sanctuary Ardent, the Compact commander received it while his fleet was still locked in close combat.
He looked at the tactical map and understood what withdrawal would mean. The ships with stronger shields could escape. The damaged ones would struggle to break away under Solenne’s fire.
He could leave them behind and save the rest.
Instead, he ordered his healthiest cruisers to form a rear line.
The damaged ships began withdrawing first.
Solenne saw the movement.
"They’re leaving," her tactical officer said.
She studied the enemy formation for a few seconds.
"Do not pursue beyond sanctuary range."
The officer seemed surprised.
"We can destroy more of them."
"And lose ships we need for the next attack."
Solenne opened a fleet-wide channel.
"Maintain pressure until they clear the evacuation route. Focus on ships that can still threaten the transports. Let the rest go."
Her fleet obeyed.
The Compact withdrew slowly, covering its damaged vessels while Sanctuary Ardent continued firing.
Several ships were destroyed before they escaped the main weapon range, but most of the formation remained together.
The second Compact group reversed through the station field and collected its scattered lead ships on the way out.
Marshal Orvek Taran had lost the battle, but he had prevented it from becoming a complete disaster.
Aurelian watched the enemy signals pull away from the sanctuary.
"Will they return?" Rhoswen asked.
"Yes," he answered.
"With more ships?"
"Almost certainly."
Rhoswen smiled faintly.
"Good."
Astra looked at her.
"We still have civilians to move."
"I know. I can wait."
Eirenne updated the evacuation estimate.
"With the hidden cargo routes now open, Neris can reduce the remaining time to two hours and forty minutes."
Aurelian closed the orbital map.
"Tell Solenne to repair what she can and keep scouts on Taran’s fleet. The sanctuary batteries need to cool, and I don’t want him learning how long that takes."
"Understood."
He turned toward the stairs leading back to the upper levels.
The Compact had been pushed away, but the sanctuary was still crowded with wounded people, prisoners, exhausted medical teams, and systems that had only just begun to wake.
More than forty-three thousand survivors remained asleep beneath them, while another group was still being moved through the cargo halls.
Winning the battle had given them time.
Now they had to use it well.
Aurelian started up the stairs with Astra and Rhoswen beside him.
Above them, Solenne’s fleet returned to its defensive positions, damaged ships moved toward the sanctuary for emergency repairs, and the medical transports began launching again.
Sanctuary Ardent had survived its first battle under Aurelian’s command.
The next one would not catch either side by surprise.
