SSS Talent: From Trash to Tyrant

Chapter 898: The Deep Chambers

  • Next Chapter

Rhosyn followed the second aide. The first man Kesh had sent away from the recovery office went toward harbour administration, while the second took the eastern stair and moved through two Tide checkpoints without showing a paper.

She stayed far enough behind that she only saw him at turns. The extra soldiers Corvyn had posted made the route difficult, but they were watching doors and crossings rather than the narrow maintenance spaces running beside them.

The aide descended three more levels, and the walls changed from finished stone to exposed support ribs and pressure piping. There were no offices here, only numbered doors, pump controls and old access corridors built into Meraval's lower foundation.

The man stopped at a steel door without a number. Two Tide guards stood outside it, and after a brief exchange one handed him a key cylinder and let him inside.

Rhosyn waited above the corridor on a service beam. He returned eight minutes later carrying nothing, the guards locked the door again, and all three left in different directions.

Once their footsteps disappeared, Rhosyn dropped to the floor and examined the entrance without touching the lock. A narrow inspection slit beside it showed shelving descending into a chamber much larger than the corridor suggested.

Boxes, ledgers and sealed document cases filled the shelves. Several carried Tide markings she recognized from the warehouse records recovered from the flooded sector, while others had red bands and dates going back years.

One case near the front had been left open. Rhosyn leaned closer and read the label through the reinforced glass.

Varn, Emric.

The shelf below carried another label covering the month Nyssara died.

Exceptional Passage Authorisations.

Rhosyn memorised the corridor, the locks and every route leading into it before leaving. She had seen enough to know Trafalgar needed to be there.

...

Trafalgar was in his rooms when she returned, with Toran outside and a stack of certified Tide authorisations waiting on his desk. Rhosyn came through the bathroom wall rather than the door, and he immediately saw from her expression that something had happened.

"I followed Kesh's aide."

"Which one?"

"The one who went toward the recovery levels. He went below them."

She explained the route, the unmarked door and what she had seen through the inspection slit. Trafalgar stopped her when she reached the labels.

"You saw Varn's name?"

"Clearly."

"And the authorisations?"

"The month matches Meer."

Trafalgar looked at the forty-two certified copies Kesh had sent to Ithanne's office. They were clean, complete and prepared for anyone who wanted to inspect them.

"Take me there."

Rhosyn watched him. "You're being followed."

"I know. We'll deal with that."

Getting him to the lower levels took almost an hour. Trafalgar filed another movement request, gave his guard a legitimate destination near the recovery works and let Rhosyn take over once they were inside the maintenance network.

She used two short passages through spaces the guard could not follow without climbing equipment. Trafalgar never entered the chamber corridor itself; Rhosyn stopped him behind an old pressure station where the steel door could be seen through a gap between pipes.

Two new guards stood outside. Trafalgar watched them for several minutes before asking the question that mattered.

"How many people came through after you left?"

"Three. One carried a document case in. Two came out with boxes."

Trafalgar stepped back from the pipes. "We're going to Ithanne."

"You don't want to see inside first?"

"I want whatever is inside to survive the question of how I found it."

...

Ithanne listened while Trafalgar gave her the location, the guards, the aide and the labels Rhosyn had seen. He left out how Rhosyn moved through the lower maintenance routes and focused on what could be verified.

"There is an archive below the recovery level that doesn't appear on the administrative index. It contains records connected to Emric Varn and exceptional passage authorisations from the month Nyssara died."

Ithanne removed her glasses. "You're certain?"

"Certain enough that I'm asking you to go there yourself."

She looked toward Rhosyn, then back to Trafalgar. "And you haven't entered it?"

"No."

"Taken anything?"

"No."

Ithanne summoned six household officers, two archive clerks and a magistrate's recorder. She also sent a sealed notice to Corvyn stating that a Myrrhvale administrative search was being conducted below Tide-controlled recovery space.

They reached the steel door with witnesses from three offices behind them. The Tide guards tried to refuse access until Ithanne showed them her seal.

"Open it."

Neither man moved.

"That wasn't a request."

One guard finally reached for the key cylinder. The chamber behind the door ran deeper than Rhosyn had been able to see, with shelving across three levels and decades of records stored outside the normal harbour archive.

The clerks began cataloguing before anything was removed. Within twenty minutes, they found the first problem.

Halvic Meer's departure file contained the household request Kesh had described. Attached behind it was a Tide routing note ordering Meer onto the first surface vessel available, signed by Kesh two days before the household request was dated.

Emric Varn's file produced the next problem. The warehouse renewal signed after his death had been processed through a Tide commercial office, and the verification sheet beneath it carried approval from Kesh's command staff.

Then the clerks opened the closure records. The pressure crossings around the second ring had been tested repeatedly before the breach, Rhavel's name appeared on several inspections, and two carried direct approval from Kesh for emergency closure authority without secondary review.

Trafalgar read from behind Ithanne's shoulder. Meer, Varn, the sealed routes and Rhavel now sat inside the same internal archive.

Kesh's name did not appear on every page, but enough of the chain reached his command that the gaps no longer protected him. Ithanne closed the final file and handed it to the recorder.

"Seal this chamber. Nobody enters without my office, the court or the succession council present."

The recorder began writing the order while household officers took position at the door. Trafalgar looked toward Rhosyn across the shelves, and neither of them had touched a single document.

This time the records would leave the room under Myrrhvale authority, with witnesses attached to every page.
