SSS-Ranked Surgeon In Another World: The Healer Is Actually OP!
Chapter 471: The Political Layer
Kael, on his bed said with a sigh: "Do you want us there?"
"Yes. If she’ll accept it. The meeting happens with all three of us or it doesn’t happen."
"Understood."
"When Caelen comes back in two days, I’ll tell him. If Elenora accepts a three-way meeting, we schedule it. If she doesn’t, if she insists on meeting me alone, I decline. Not because I couldn’t handle a solo meeting, but because a person who won’t accept our team in a first meeting is not the kind of political ally I want to make. Elenora Vessa’s willingness to meet us as a party, on our terms, is itself a test. If she passes it, we move forward. If she fails it, we’ve learned something valuable at no cost."
"That’s clean," Kael said.
"It’s clean."
Theron nodded slowly. He was not fully at peace with the choice, Bruce could see that, but he understood it. He was, Bruce noticed, the most cautious of the three of them in political matters. That was probably useful. A young man who had once spent his working life reading ledgers for signs of fraud had good instincts about people trying to shape narratives.
"Alright," Theron said, quietly. "Then we plan for the meeting."
"Not tonight. Tonight we sleep. Tomorrow we hunt. We hunt normally. We do not act like the meeting is coming. We do the work. The meeting is one thing. The work is everything. If we let the meeting distract us from the work, we lose what has already made us worth meeting."
"That’s also clean," Kael said.
"Then let’s sleep."
The three of them cleaned up the containers, set their gear in order, and lay down on their pallets.
Bruce, in the dark, sent the thread thought.
I am all right. I am E-rank. I have accepted a meeting with a member of the ruling council of this city. I am being careful. I am being helped by good people. I miss you. I am building.
The thread hummed thin and steady between the realms. He did not know if the thought reached. He sent it anyway. Every night.
He slept.
Outside, the fifth day ended, and Xiltra moved into its night, and somewhere in the Spire district a woman named Elenora Vessa was probably doing whatever a Nonagon member did in the evening, reading, working, planning, and Caelen was probably reporting back to her that the invitation had been received and would be answered in two days.
The climb continued.
The political layer had arrived.
Bruce, in his sleep, held quietly to his own name and his own thread and his own careful pace.
The fifth day was done.
Bruce woke to a room that was different.
Not the physical space, the room was the same room, the same soul-stone walls, the same three pallet-beds, the same small table in the corner where his soul-script manual sat closed on top of a folded piece of bark-cloth. What was different was the quality of the space. The three of them had gone to sleep last night as three E-rank hunters who had decided something together, and had woken as three E-rank hunters who were now carrying that decision forward into a working day.
The decision had made the room feel more serious.
Bruce lay still for a moment and let himself notice the seriousness.
Then he got up.
Kael and Theron were both still asleep. Bruce washed quietly and came back and, on the small table, opened the soul-script manual to where he had stopped last night. He read for perhaps twenty minutes in the pre-dawn glow. He memorized three of the basic seals, the character for stop, the character for bind, the character for quiet. The manual described each one in terms of its written form, its energy cost curve, and its typical applications.
He did not practice the seals in the room. He would practice them in the dungeon today, on beasts, where the cost of failure was low.
By the time Kael and Theron woke, Bruce had already made his day-plan.
Breakfast at the stew stall was quick.
The heavyset woman gave the three of them a small nod, not the pause on the ladle, which had been yesterday’s acknowledgement of their rank change, but a smaller more ordinary nod that told Bruce he had passed some invisible mark. He was no longer someone she needed to visibly register. He was now simply one of her regulars, in whatever informal system she used. That was a promotion of a certain kind. Bruce appreciated it.
They ate. They paid. They walked to the portal district.
Bruce counted watchers on the walk. There were fewer today than yesterday, four instead of six. He noted the pattern without commenting on it. The reduction meant that some of the quiet observers had gotten what they needed from watching. Bruce could guess what they had gotten: confirmation that Caelen had approached him. Confirmation that the approach had been received. Confirmation that Bruce had not immediately declined. The city’s political layer was already updating its understanding of the party’s status, and the reduction in watchers meant that some watchers had moved on to other tasks, either because their employer had received enough information, or because their employer had decided to see how the Elenora question resolved before investing more attention.
He filed this. He kept walking.
Kael, beside him, said very quietly: "Four today."
"Four."
"Elenora’s move has changed the field."
"It has. The others are waiting to see what happens with her before they decide their own moves."
"So the meeting itself matters."
"The meeting itself matters. Not just for what it produces between us and her. For what it signals to everyone else who is watching."
"Which is why the old soul argued for you to accept it."
"Yes."
Kael nodded. Theron, on Bruce’s other side, was walking with his hands in his pockets and his eyes moving over the streets in a careful new way, not looking at watchers directly, but building a mental map of who was where. He was, Bruce noticed, learning to read the political layer faster than Bruce had expected. The tax-clerk instinct for signs of pattern in populations was serving him well.
They reached the stone portal.
