The question from the previous night followed them into the next morning. The Ashcroft Family and the Nephilim gathered in the mission preparation room, reviewing the available assignments. They’d only just reached rank 29, but nobody was treating that as the finish line.

Mara looked up from the mission list. "We’ve been talking about what kind of team you are."

"And?" Reinhard asked.

"I still don’t know."

Nobody took it as an insult.

"You’re powerful, versatile, capable of handling almost every role," she continued. "But most teams near the top have something they’re known for. Suppression, rescue, reconnaissance, relic recovery, specific environments." She looked around the group. "You can do all of it. None of it defines you."

"So we’re good at everything and therefore have no identity," Reinhard said, leaning back.

"That’s one way to put it."

"Sounds like a problem we’ll solve eventually."

"Perhaps sooner than you think."

A new mission lit up the screen.

[Mission Available: Graymoor Relic Expedition.]

[Difficulty: C+ / Approaching B-Rank Risk.]

[Recommended Team Ranking: Top 30.]

[Objectives: Investigate the disappearance of a previous expedition team. Locate surviving civilians. Eliminate hostile creatures. Recover a relic-class Mana object. Return evidence regarding the expedition’s disappearance.]

Graymoor was dense forest tangled with the ruins of an old settlement. Mana levels had gone unstable, hostile signatures had been detected, and blood traces had turned up near the previous team’s abandoned camp.

"Bloodkin?" Rika asked, reading it over.

"Possible," Mara said. "Nothing confirmed."

"Are these stray?" Emily asked.

"They should be," Seraphine said lightly.

Reinhard scanned the objectives, investigation, rescue, combat, relic recovery, and found it almost suspiciously tailored to them. Mara accepted it.

[Mission Accepted.]

Graymoor turned out darker than Reinhard expected. Dense canopy blotted out most of the sunlight, unstable Mana pooled into thick and thin patches across the forest floor, and the ruins sprawled wide enough that figuring out exactly where the previous team had vanished was its own small problem.

Mara split the group without hesitation. "Maki, Seraphine, retrace the previous expedition’s route. Rhea, Lily, search the western ruins for survivors. Emily, Rika, handle anything stronger, but stay close to the formation. Yuna and I coordinate from the center." She looked at Reinhard. "You stay flexible."

"Meaning?"

"If someone runs into something outside their skill set, you go there."

"So I’m the emergency button."

"Something like that."

The team moved. Within twenty minutes, Maki and Seraphine had tracked footprints to an old stone structure, and Emily and Rika had already cleared several hostile creatures trying to reach the central formation before they got close.

Then Lily stopped walking. "What is it?" Rhea asked.

"They’re watching us."

Several hostile signatures drifted through the trees, pulling back every time the team advanced. "They’re waiting for us to make a mistake," Lily said.

"Then don’t give them one."

Lily studied the creatures. Every aggressive move they made got answered instantly. "What if I don’t give them a mistake," she said slowly, "and give them something else instead?"

"You’re about to do something reckless, aren’t you," Rhea sighed.

"Probably."

"Fine. Just know what you’re doing."

Lily stepped outside the formation, and Maki’s voice crackled through the comms immediately. "Lily, you’re outside the formation."

"I know."

"Then come back."

She kept walking, and several creatures broke from the trees to follow her. "She’s leading them toward the eastern ruins," Maki said, tracking the route.

"That’s Lily," Rhea said, like that explained everything, because it mostly did.

Lily reached a narrow gap between two collapsed buildings and waited. The creatures charged in after her, and she slipped through the opening with several right on her heels. Then she noticed one had stopped. "One didn’t follow."

"Where?" Maki asked instantly.

She looked toward the western ruins. "Behind you."

The leftover creature was already moving on the rescue team.

"They split up," Seraphine said, understanding first.

Lily spun and ran back, her first read on the situation already in pieces. The creatures hadn’t simply chased her. They’d understood exactly what she was doing and used it to pull the team apart.

Rhea intercepted the stray before it reached the survivors, but instead of attacking, it bolted deeper into the ruins. "That’s not normal," she said, frowning.

Lily caught up beside her. "It wants us to chase it."

"Don’t," Maki warned over the comms.

Lily smiled. "No. Let’s make it think we are." She followed deliberately, letting it lead her around a ruined wall before it turned and attacked the second she stepped through alone. She’d expected exactly that, left the opening wide, let it lunge, and sidestepped at the last possible second so the strike sailed straight into the path of a second creature waiting in ambush.

"Now!" Rhea shouted.

Emily and Rika converged from opposite sides, Maki calling timing, Yuna shifting the formation until the enemies found themselves boxed in on every side.

One tried the back exit and ran straight into Rhea. Another tried climbing the ruins and ran straight into Emily. The formation closed, and the whole group collapsed in moments.

"The first plan failed, and you changed it mid-fight," Maki said, staring at her.

"She stopped trying to force the original prediction," Seraphine said, smiling.

Lily, breathing hard, grinned anyway. "You’re getting better at this," Rhea said, shaking her head.

"At being reckless?"

"At knowing when to be."

Before Lily could answer that, hostile signatures flared behind Reinhard. He turned as one rushed him and raised a hand, Spatial Pull yanking it straight toward him. Right before the hit landed, it severed its own limb to break the pull and escaped on the momentum.

His eyes sharpened. "It understood the ability."

A second creature attacked from the flank, and Spatial Push sent it crashing through a ruined wall. Instead of falling, it used the impact to vault up onto the ruins above.

"They’re learning," Rika said, staring.

"Apparently," he said, a faint smile in place.

A third emerged, heavier, armored in something dense. He unleashed All-Cutting Slash, the invisible edge landing clean, and the creature staggered but stayed up. He kept feeding Mana into it, the slash adapting to cut through its shifting defenses, until the creature restructured itself and the cut slowed down.

"So you can adapt too," he said, almost admiring it. It tried to run, but Spatial Pull dragged it straight back, and another invisible slash tore through, this one with far more Mana behind it, and the defense finally cracked. It dropped.

"You weren’t just trying to kill it," Rika said.

"I wanted to see how it reacted."

"And now we know they’re not behaving like normal creatures," Maki said, looking at the ruins.

"They’re studying us," Seraphine said.

Eventually the team found the missing expedition’s survivors, seven people alive, several badly hurt.

Rhea moved in fast. "You’re safe now."

Reinhard started treating the wounded with Mia while Kael covered the rear, and the blood traces turned out to belong to the survivors’ own injuries rather than anything worse. That should have been the end of the complications.

Instead, Lily caught movement up ahead, and the hostile signatures had changed shape entirely.

"They’re responding to us," Maki said, watching it unfold.

The creatures coming out of the ruins now moved with far more coordination, and then the Bloodkin appeared, watching rather than attacking, pulling back whenever the team advanced, stepping forward whenever they relaxed.

"They react to openings," Lily said.

"Can you exploit that?" Seraphine asked.

"Probably."

"I know that look," Rhea sighed.

The Bloodkin retreated.

"They want us to follow," Lily said.

"Then we don’t," Maki said.

"No. We pretend we do."

"She’s making them think they predicted her," Maki said, catching on instantly.

Lily trailed the Bloodkin around a ruined structure, and the moment she stepped in alone, they attacked. She left the opening on purpose, let them take it, then shifted direction at the last second so the strike missed clean.

Rhea sealed the escape route, Rika met the strongest Bloodkin head on, Emily joined her, and Yuna adjusted the formation around all of it.

"They predicted where Lily would go," Maki said, watching.

"No," Seraphine said. "Lily predicted where they thought she’d go." Maki smiled at the distinction.

Lily came back to formation breathing hard but smiling, and Reinhard, who’d watched the whole maneuver without once stepping in, laughed. "That’s my Lily."

She went instantly red. "I thought you were going to tell me not to do that."

"Normally, I would."

"Then why didn’t you?"

"Because you knew exactly what you were doing." He let that settle before adding, "Being reckless isn’t a weakness by itself. If you understand why you’re taking the risk, it becomes a weapon."

Lily looked back toward where the Bloodkin had scattered and understood what he actually meant. He wasn’t telling her to stop being herself. He was telling her to understand herself.

Rhea nudged her shoulder. "You look like you’re thinking too hard."

"I’m trying to remember what he just said."

"That’s dangerous too." Even Reinhard laughed at that, and for a moment the tension of the whole fight eased out of the group.

Then Maki went still. "Wait." Everyone looked over. "The Bloodkin are retreating toward the center."

"That leads to the relic," Seraphine said, checking the map. They followed.

The Bloodkin were eventually boxed into the deepest part of the ruins, where the relic sat sealed inside an old stone chamber wrapped in unstable Mana. Maki read the route. "There’s a safe path through."

"Then take it," Yuna said.

Mara started directing immediately. "Rhea, Lily, hold the entrance. Maki, guide everyone through. Emily, Rika, stay close to the relic. Reinhard, deal with anything none of us can."

"Finally," he said, "my official job description."

Lily laughed. "You’ve been doing that since we started."

"And now it’s official."

They moved through, Maki threading the group past the unstable zones, Emily and Rika guarding the relic, Rhea and Lily holding the door while the last of the creatures tried to force their way in. Within minutes the relic was secured, the survivors stabilized, the evidence collected, and the mission closed out clean.

Then, just as they prepared to leave, Emily looked back at the ruins. "Where did the strongest Bloodkin go?" Everyone stopped, and they realized there weren’t any remains around.

"It retreated," Reinhard said, peering into the dark.

"Or it left," Rika said.

Emily frowned. "I hope it didn’t lead to anything big. Hopefully it’s just a stray one and hasn’t joined a family."

"Does a Bloodkin family even exist here?" Adrian asked, surprised.

"I hope not, or it’ll be troubling," Emily muttered.

For a moment, Reinhard saw irritation on her face before she walked forward. He furrowed his brow but didn’t say anything, and soon everyone followed her.

...

The Association processed the results once they returned, the evaluator reading the report through twice.

"Investigation completed. Seven survivors recovered. Relic secured. Hostile creatures eliminated. Bloodkin encountered and contained." He looked up. "You completed this without requesting additional support."

Mara nodded.

"You’re still an unusual team," he said. "No conventional specialization."

Reinhard braced for another version of the same complaint, but the evaluator tapped the report instead.

"But somehow you guys made it work. You didn’t need to become a different team when the mission changed on you."

The ranking screen refreshed.

[Ranking 29 → Ranking 25.]

"We’re getting closer," Maki said, smiling.

"Top 20," Rika said.

"Four more positions," Emily added.

Rhea slung an arm around Lily. "And apparently our specialty now includes letting this one do reckless things."

"It was useful," Lily protested.

"It was extremely reckless."

"But it worked."

"That’s the problem," Rhea sighed, and everyone laughed.

Mara watched the whole exchange, and for the first time she wasn’t looking at two teams learning to share a battlefield. "I think I understand now."

"Understand what?" Reinhard asked.

She looked around at all of them. "You’re not a suppression team. Not a rescue team. Not a relic expedition team." A small smile. "You’re an adaptive expedition team."

The words sat with the group for a moment. Their specialty had never been one type of mission. It was simply adapting to whatever mission landed in front of them.

Reinhard looked at the ranking. It said 25. "Not bad."

"We still have work to do," Maki said.

"At least now we know what we’re working toward," Emily said.

He glanced at Lily. "And some of us need to work on being slightly less reckless."

She pointed at him immediately. "You said my recklessness could be a weapon."

"Controlled recklessness."

"I don’t remember the controlled part."

"Neither does she," Rhea said, and the group laughed again, easier this time, like something had genuinely clicked into place rather than just gotten lucky.

For the first time, the Ashcroft Family and the Nephilim weren’t two teams learning to work together anymore. They’d started functioning as something that was theirs alone.

Then the mission board refreshed, and a new assignment loaded in.

[Mission Available: Bloodkin Suppression.]

The laughter died out fast. Mara’s smile disappeared. Rika noticed first, then Emily, and Reinhard turned toward the screen. "What?"

Mara read the details again, slower this time. "This one’s different." He stepped closer.

The risk classification sat considerably higher than anything they’d taken on, the report citing coordinated Bloodkin activity, multiple affected settlements, missing Awakener teams, unusual Blood Mana signatures, and the possibility of an actual Bloodkin leader behind it.

The number of hostiles involved was listed, simply, as unknown.

"This isn’t a normal Bloodkin suppression mission," Mara said finally.

"Then what is it?" he asked, all the humor gone from his voice.

She looked at the listing one more time and didn’t have an answer yet. "I don’t know yet."
