The scout relayed that they were still about 16 to 17 miles away from the Black Tiger Forest, a distance that would require at least half a day of walking.
Upon careful consideration, Sun Bai, Sun Qian, and the others selected a location within the woods to set up an overnight camp. They diligently cleared the area of underbrush, securing the horses to tree trunks and forming a protective ring with the carriages on the outer perimeter.
They organized four rotating groups, each consisting of 36 individuals, to take turns patrolling during the night. The rest of the group were instructed to remain in their armor and not to remove it, maintaining a state of perpetual vigilance.
As the sun slowly dipped below the western horizon, the evening glow faded, plunging the forest into deep darkness. The towering trees, rocks, and their shadowy silhouettes took on an eerie quality, exacerbated by sporadic sounds of flapping wings and eerie calls from birds, causing shivers down their spines.
Their superior numbers provided some reassurance because if only a few individuals were to remain alone in this forest at night, the fear might have been paralyzing.
To combat the darkness, they lit three large bonfires to illuminate the area. The night watchmen were responsible for ensuring the fires remained ablaze.
In the moonless and pitch-black forest, the night offered no lunar illumination, making it an exceptionally dim night.
On this particular night, Qiao Xuan refrained from using her power to survey the surroundings. Her powers consumed significantly more energy during the night compared to daylight hours. Furthermore, she believed that the assailants would not return so promptly after their initial encounter. If they did, Sun Bai, Sun Qian, and the others had taken thorough precautions, leaving little room for concern.
As anticipated, the night passed without any disturbances from the attackers, but they faced a different threat—a pack of wolves.
Over a hundred adult gray wolves, howling in the middle of the night, aggressively descended upon their camp. It seemed as though the wolves cared not for their own lives, driven by an insatiable aggression.
A sudden sense of alarm rippled through the camp, instantly thrusting everyone into a heightened state of vigilance.
Qiao Xuan swiftly employed her superpower to assess the situation, and thankfully, she detected only a pack of wolves with no human presence trailing them.
These wolves exhibited highly unusual behavior, suggesting they might have been drugged with some sort of stimulant. Their ferocious howls and reckless charges threw the camp’s guards into disarray, and several of them sustained bites.
Under the coordinated command of Sun Bai and Sun Qian, the group eventually repelled the wolf pack after approximately an hour of intense combat.
A collective sigh of relief echoed through the camp.
They ignited torches to survey the scene and treat the wounded. Numerous ordinary followers were deeply shaken, huddled together in pairs or trios, consoling one another through sobs and discussions.
Among the distressed individuals, one woman’s screams and cries pierced the night, distinguishing her from the rest.
While others cried quietly, she wept with such intensity that she seemed on the brink of screaming to the heavens.
This woman was none other than Qiao Wei.
During this tumultuous moment, Shao Yunduan had gone to confer with Sun Bai and Sun Qian. Qiao Xuan took it upon herself to console the frightened individuals, assess injuries, and instruct Lixia and Liqiu to prepare the necessary medicines.
Upon hearing Qiao Wei’s anguished cries, Qiao Xuan furrowed her brow and summoned Mianmian, saying, “Let’s go see what’s happening.”
Mianmian acknowledged the command, and Ah-Ye swiftly trailed behind.
When they arrived at the scene, a crowd had gathered around Qiao Wei. As Qiao Xuan approached, the crowd dispersed, making way for her. “Madam Shao!”
