Sovereign of the Ashes
Chapter 2020: Calling for Reinforcements
Before Mosquito Daoist stood a massive army radiating the power of destruction. Beside him, the Myriad Manifestations World legions had already switched sides. In the distance, the elite forces of the Magus Alliance were closing in without pause.
What was even the point of fighting anymore?!
The Gallant Federation legions were already showing signs of retreat under the relentless attacks of the elven and beastmen armies.
Seeing this, Mosquito Daoist once again considered running away.
It was not that the Gallant Federation legions were weak. Their opponents were simply too powerful. The fact that they had held out this long was already impressive!
The Grand Elven World and Beastmen World legions were among the main forces of the Magus Alliance. Both had performed exceptionally well since the very beginning of the Clash of Civilizations.
Moreover, the troops Aeluna and Kampas had brought here were the finest elite legions their two planes had to offer.
Khimairas, Hill Giants, Horned Eagles, Spellbreaker Legion, Treefolk, Night Elves, Grassland Elves, Moon Elves, Snow Mountain Elves... Nearly every notable race of the Grand Elven World had sent its finest warriors into this war.
This wave of reinforcements had even brought along a special unit that had only recently begun making a name for itself on the civilizational battlefield—the Druid Legion.
Even Lady Bev, the leader of the Magus Civilization, had praised this legion before.
The Druids were a unique military force capable of transforming into two basic forms: brown bears and great eagles. They also possessed more advanced transformations.
It was even said that the most gifted among them could transform into dragons.
Aeluna had personally supported the development of this special legion during her early years.
When it came to advancing her plane’s civilization, she had never been content to rest on past achievements.
The powerful Titan World currently occupied the highest position within the Magus Alliance.
However, when it came to the diversity of its development and the variety of races it contained, the Grand Elven World was undoubtedly the most dazzling jewel in the Magus Alliance.
Titan World was certainly powerful, but most of its strength came from overwhelming combat power and its elite forces.
Yet the development of a civilization could not be measured by military strength alone.
Within the Magus Alliance, there was another race that combined diversity and strength much like the Grand Elven World on a far greater scale—the Insectoids!
With the Insectoids returning to the Magus Alliance, Titan World’s position at the top was no longer secure.
That world had only three overlords. The Insectoids had six!
Any large-sized plane that developed its potential to the fullest had a chance to rise into the ranks of the top-tier civilizations.
Even Myriad Manifestations World aimed to reach that level.
As things stood, the Insectoids had the greatest potential to become the leading force within the Magus Alliance.
Fortunately, certain historical ties made it unlikely that the Magus Civilization would ever view them with suspicion. More importantly, the Empress of Blades carried half the blood of Magus World.
With a civilizational war still raging, every powerhouse of the Magus Civilization shared the same goal—to destroy their greatest external enemy.
No one had time to worry about such distant possibilities. Even if such concerns eventually arose, they would not emerge in this generation.
And by then... perhaps no one would even know where the Insectoids had gone.
The fact that the Insectoids could leave the Magus Alliance’s sphere of influence for nearly a hundred thousand years at a time showed that they were not a civilization bound by tradition or confined to a single region.
They developed through constant migration, carrying the might of their swarms into the deepest reaches of the cosmos.
Perhaps that was simply the destiny of the Insectoids.
Meanwhile, on the battlefield, Kampas, the God of Beastmen, employed none of Aeluna’s elaborate tactics.
The composition of Beastmen World’s legions was almost unchanged from what it had been over a hundred thousand years ago.
At most, more beastman warriors now wore enchanted armor, while their priests had developed several new glorious war songs and sinister ones.
As for any truly innovative changes... There were none!
“Our Beastmen World may not have as many tricks or combat styles as the Grand Elven World, but every beastman warrior has a solid chest and powerful muscles!” roared a Beast God of the Sa’al Clan.[1]
His words reflected the thoughts of nearly every beastman present.
War drums thundered as mighty battle songs rang out.
Supported by the aerial and ranged attacks of their elven allies, the beastman warriors charged toward the enemy, each surrounded by a glorious halo of light.
All the reinforcements brought by Aeluna and Kampas possessed strength at Rank One or above.
Ordinary elves and beastmen below Rank One were simply not qualified to participate in such a chaotic interstellar battle.
War and slaughter once again swept across the main battlefield.
This was no longer merely a contest between overlord-level beings. Tens of millions, perhaps even trillions, of lower-ranking units were now being drawn into the clash.
It was common for overlords to receive support from the law power generated by the vast legions beneath them.
When one side held a clear advantage among its lower-ranking forces, that advantage could even flow back toward its overlords.
Aeluna and Kampas could already feel vast waves of faith power surging toward them from their followers and subjects.
The Gallant Federation benefited in much the same way. Its countless mobile suits and warships gathered into a boundless ocean of steel, giving the federation’s overlord-class fleet far greater tactical flexibility across the battlefield.
For Mosquito Daoist, being caught at the center of such a massive civilizational melee should have actually worked in his favor.
The arrival of the elven and beastman armies effectively provided him with an enormous supply of fresh flesh and blood.
Large-scale chaotic battles like this were where he thrived.
By contrast, direct confrontations with overlords or warfare against technological civilizations such as the Gallant Federation were precisely where he was weakest.
Unfortunately, Mosquito Daoist had already lost his courage.
During his battle with the Great Monkey of Destruction, Mosquito Daoist had burned through far too much of his blood essence.
Even if he devoured every living creature across two medium-sized planes, it still would not be enough to replenish the origin essence he had lost to the power of destruction.
He did not have a Seven-Refinement Golden Pill made by the Palace of Eight Views to heal his wounds either.
In the distance, the elven and beastman legions surged toward the battlefield like an unstoppable tide.
While the Gallant Federation legions were still holding the line, Mosquito Daoist turned and fled without hesitation.
The sight of him fleeing sent the Great Monkey of Destruction into a fury. Standing atop his Eighth-Grade Black Lotus of Destruction, Wukong immediately gave chase.
“Hey, didn’t you want my Black Lotus? Why are you running away now? Come! Take my head, and the lotus will be yours!”
He blocked Mosquito Daoist’s path and taunted him.
Mosquito Daoist ignored him.
Staying here any longer would be pure stupidity. Who knew when another two Magus Civilization overlords might suddenly arrive?
It was better to escape while he still had some strength left.
Seeing Mosquito Daoist flee without even putting up a fight only enraged Wukong further.
However, they were both Rank Eight overlords. If Mosquito Daoist was determined to escape, stopping him would be extremely difficult.
Aeluna and the others had yet to close in. Venerable Yunqi could offer some assistance, but expecting him to hold back Mosquito Daoist under such pressure was simply unrealistic.
Wukong had only just regained most of his senses, yet this turn of events nearly sent his power out of control again.
He rubbed the nearly bald patch on the back of his neck and cursed under his breath.
“Shit, I’m practically bald already! There’s no way I’m letting you escape! Even if you manage to get away, I, Old Sun, will tear a few more chunks of flesh from your body first—and then hunt you wherever you go!”
The Great Monkey of Destruction threw back his head and let out a long, piercing howl. Then, without warning, he smacked his own forehead.
Of course, he was not hitting himself. He was smacking the golden circlet around his head.
“The Buddhist faction already hates you more than anyone else. Don’t blame me for calling them in as reinforcements!”
Dazzling golden light erupted from the circlet, streaking across the battlefield of civilizations before disappearing into the distant depths of the cosmos.
Faint Buddhist chants echoed from within the radiance.
This was no ordinary beam of light.
It was a signal, and its destination was none other than the Immortal Realm Civilization—the Buddha Realm!
1. Translator’s Recap: In Chapter 1124, it was stated that in the Beastmen World, “Sa’al” was a surname reserved for those of true royal blood, not even individuals who became kings of their respective nations after reaching Rank Three. ☜
