Chapter 50: Injured
Chapter 50: Chapter 50: Injured
Although he had his doubts, He Shian kept a stern expression on his face and replied with the utmost seriousness, "Yes, Chief Bei!"
Captain Li walked out of the office with him. He Shian then asked, "Who found them?"
"Lin Jingjing and her group." As Captain Li spoke, he reached into his pocket, pulled out a pack of cigarettes, and stuck one in his mouth.
He offered one to He Shian and asked, "Want one?"
He Shian refused. "I don’t smoke. You know that, Captain Li."
"Tch. What’s not to like about a good smoke?" Captain Li scoffed, then shoved the pack back into his pocket.
After leaving the office building, He Shian immediately assembled the First and Second Squads.
He briefed them on the mission, and they set out in a medium-sized military transport.
Meanwhile, in Hong Fei Park, the five of them were perched in a tree. Lin Jingjing swung her legs, looking down and carefully observing the Steel Beast that was ramming its head against the tree below.
She then spoke to the others nearby. "So, where do you guys think these mutant beasts came from?"
"They tunneled their way in," Shi Feng chimed in. The three of them had previously encountered a Steel Beast emerging from a tunnel while they were delivering meals.
These Steel Beasts had gotten smarter. They knew how to cover their tracks and use tunnels to evade detection.
Hearing Shi Feng’s words, the somewhat simple-minded Gu Kaiwen asked, "Since they’ve shown up in the city, could humans be involved?"
"Or maybe they hatched from eggs and just haven’t been discovered until now?" Feng He suggested, poking his head out to look at Lin Jingjing.
Mo Xuan leaned more toward the idea of human involvement. A grand conspiracy theory was already forming in his mind.
He believed someone was doing this intentionally to plunge B6 Star into a state of panic. The mutant beasts had always plundered various rare minerals, vegetation, and plants.
This was the energy they would use to reproduce for more than half a year to come.
They had never seen how the mutant beasts converted these minerals, vegetation, and plants into energy.
But you could see the results in the news reports: barren, cracked earth and trees devoid of any life.
The photos themselves seemed to exude a deathly stillness.
Hong Fei Park was a massive botanical park, and its trees and plants were ancient.
The Steel Beasts here were much larger than the ones they had seen on the battlefield.
After a moment of thought, Mo Xuan finally said, "I’m leaning toward human involvement."
"Someone wants to destroy B6 Star."
Hearing this, the other four exchanged glances.
"That’s a pretty dark thought, don’t you think?" Lin Jingjing scratched her head and said with a chuckle. "Maybe it’s just like Shi Feng said? They just tunneled their way in?"
Although Lin Jingjing said that on the surface, inwardly she was mulling over Mo Xuan’s words.
’Maybe it really is deliberate?’
The more Lin Jingjing thought about it, the tighter her brow furrowed. Finally, she spoke, her voice turning serious. "Let’s take care of these Steel Beasts, then we’ll investigate."
"What if it really is a conspiracy?"
Hearing her words, the others pressed their lips together and nodded. They raised the guns slung around their necks and aimed at the red spot on the Steel Beasts’ chests.
All five pulled their triggers simultaneously, and several mutant beasts fell dead at their hands.
The remaining two watched their companions die and let out mournful roars.
The sound was so loud it startled the birds in the trees into flight.
"What was that sound?"
A male voice rang out, full of confusion.
Lin Jingjing’s hearing was sharp. She was the first to hear the person’s voice, followed by footsteps.
At first, Lin Jingjing couldn’t believe it. As the footsteps drew closer, she turned her head and saw a young man in an outdoor jacket, carrying a black backpack, slowly walk into their line of sight.
All five of them stared, wide-eyed. They never expected to see anyone in such a secluded area.
Amid their surprise, they saw the two mutant beasts that had been frantically pounding the trees suddenly change their target and charge toward the young man.
"Fuck!" Shi Feng cursed. Lin Jingjing was the first to react, leaping directly from the tree and sprinting toward the young man with her gun in hand.
Mo Xuan and Gu Kaiwen followed close behind, rushing forward as well.
But upon seeing the two Steel Beasts, the young man was so terrified that he collapsed to the ground.
His eyes went wide, and his whole body froze, completely unable to move.
Just as the Steel Beast’s claws were about to touch the young man, Gu Kaiwen lunged forward, throwing his arms around the young man.
But he wasn’t fast enough to dodge. The Steel Beast’s claws slashed across Gu Kaiwen’s back.
Gritting his teeth against the pain, Gu Kaiwen held onto the man and rolled into the nearby thicket. The movement was so violent that blood splattered everywhere.
Blood spattered across the young man’s youthful face. His hands, which had been clinging to Gu Kaiwen, were also covered in it.
His hands trembled, and tears streamed uncontrollably down his face.
"Kaiwen—!"
They all witnessed the scene, their eyes filled with horror and panic.
Lin Jingjing’s panic lasted only a second before her eyes filled with murderous intent.
She charged forward with her gun, nimbly dodging the Steel Beast’s attacks before firing a final shot into its most vital spot.
Seeing all its companions dead, the last Steel Beast considered retreating.
But it had barely taken two steps back before Lin Jingjing finished it off with a single shot.
All the mutant beasts they had found were now dead.
Feng He rushed over, helped Gu Kaiwen up, and began to check his injuries. After assessing the damage, he immediately yelled to Lin Jingjing, "Sister Lin, a Grade B Recovery Agent!"
Hearing this, Lin Jingjing frantically fumbled in her Space Ring, pulled out a Grade B Recovery Agent, and handed it to Feng He.
After taking it, Feng He carefully fed it to Gu Kaiwen.
He didn’t breathe a sigh of relief until Gu Kaiwen had swallowed all of it.
Watching the wound slowly begin to heal, the others couldn’t help but sigh in relief.
"Is... is he okay...?" the young man asked, his voice trembling.
As soon as he spoke, all their eyes turned to him.
He wasn’t very tall and had a slim build, but his face was pale, and his hands were soft and fair.
His clothes were expensive, from well-known, high-end brands.
Anyone who could afford clothes from brands like these had to be from a wealthy family.
And the person in front of them was probably the young master of a rich family.
"He drank the Recovery Potion, so there are no major issues for now," Feng He replied.
Seeing the boy’s body trembling, Shi Feng knew he was terrified. He reached out, pulled the boy up from the ground, and, ignoring the blood on his clothes, wrapped him in a hug.
"It’s okay now. The danger has passed. You don’t have to be afraid anymore," Shi Feng comforted him.
Being held and comforted, the young man suddenly couldn’t hold it in anymore and began to sob even harder.
"Is he really okay?" the young man was still worried about Gu Kaiwen. "Why were those mutant beasts here?"
"Aren’t they supposed to be at the border?"
