Chapter 49: Chapter 49: Captain Li, Save Me

Lin Jingjing sat on a swing, her legs swaying back and forth. Her ears twitched slightly.

She frowned slightly. ’There are only the five of us here. Where did that extra sound come from?’

Lin Jingjing turned her head to look, and she froze on the spot.

Several Steel Beasts had appeared behind them. They were twice the size of the ones they usually saw, and a mixture of saliva and blood dripped from their fanged mouths.

"What do we do?" Gu Kaiwen stared at the mutant beasts, his hands nervously clutching his pant leg. Unsure of what to do, his gaze finally landed on Lin Jingjing.

Lin Jingjing calmly took the guns Captain Li had given them out of her Space Ring, handing one to each of them. "What else can we do?" she replied. "Run."

Running was their only option. They didn’t know where these mutant beasts had come from, or how many there were in total.

Fighting them head-on would be suicide.

The moment they had the guns, they turned and sprinted back the way they came. As soon as the group moved, the mutant beasts did too.

The five of them ran in front, with the mutant beasts chasing from behind.

Considering there were other tourists down below, they had no choice but to escape down a nearby trail.

The results of their month of special training were immediately apparent; they ran at top speed without even getting winded.

Even in the midst of such a tense escape, Lin Jingjing managed to activate her Star Ring and quickly find Captain Li in her list of contacts.

Just then, a Steel Beast lunged at her. Lin Jingjing sensed it and jumped forward to dodge.

She dodged the Steel Beast’s attack just in time. The beast’s claws sliced through the air, carving several deep gouges into the brick and dirt below.

Captain Li picked up. He was smoking, an impatient look on his face. "If you’re out having fun, then have fun. Why are you video calling me?"

He had been playing Star Soul and was about to win when the girl’s call came in.

By the time he looked back at his screen, his opponent had already killed him.

Captain Li took a drag from his cigarette and slowly exhaled, watching the shaky video feed of Lin Jingjing running.

He asked, confused, "Are you guys doing parkour?"

With an agile leap, Lin Jingjing jumped up into a large tree.

Temporarily safe, Lin Jingjing finally said, "Captain Li, you need to send people to Hong Fei Park! There are mutant beasts here!"

Hearing Lin Jingjing’s words, Captain Li’s expression finally turned serious.

"For real!" Lin Jingjing answered seriously, then aimed her camera down at the base of the tree. A Steel Beast was ramming its head against the trunk.

Captain Li silently pinched the spot under his nose. Hong Fei Park was only a few kilometers away from the most bustling part of the metropolis.

He hadn’t thought the Steel Beasts had already infiltrated the city itself.

If there were more of these mutant beasts, he couldn’t even imagine the disaster that would unfold if they ran into the city.

"Help us, Captain Li," Lin Jingjing called out, but her face showed no sign of panic.

She even plucked some leaves and tossed them down at the mutant beast’s head, not looking at all like someone who needed to be saved.

Captain Li put a hand to his forehead, speechless at her behavior. "Lin Jingjing, could you try to be a little more stressed about this?"

"If that Steel Beast breaks the tree, you’ll be sorry."

"I can still run," Lin Jingjing replied.

As she spoke, she tossed down another leaf, further enraging the Steel Beast.

It began ramming the tree with even greater force, making the entire tree shake with every impact.

Yellowing leaves rained down, scattering all over the ground below.

The other four had also scrambled up into trees by now. They leaned against the trunks, watching the frenzied mutant beasts on the ground.

It was the first time they’d ever been able to observe these mutant beasts so calmly.

"Where are the others?" Captain Li asked.

"They’re all up in trees," Lin Jingjing replied. "There’s no immediate danger to our lives."

"Okay. Take care of yourselves," Captain Li said before hanging up.

After ending the video call, Captain Li immediately stood up and headed for Beisang’s office.

He knocked and entered, his expression grim. "Chief Bei, mutant beasts have been discovered in Hong Fei Park. I request that you dispatch a team to exterminate them."

Beisang, who was busy preparing for a military competition a few months away, looked up at his words. Her elegant brows furrowed, and her voice was cold. "How are you certain?"

"Members of my unit are at the scene right now. They haven’t escaped the danger yet," Captain Li replied.

A month had passed, and now the first news she heard of them was that they were in danger.

Beisang frowned, then asked, "Do you have proof?"

"I do," Captain Li said, pulling up the recent video call to show her.

After watching it, Beisang was also left speechless. The girl didn’t look like she needed rescuing at all.

"I understand," Beisang nodded.

She then made a call, summoning He Shian to her office.

Ten minutes later, He Shian stood in the office. He was wearing a black combat uniform, the form-fitting fabric outlining his pectoral muscles and physique.

He looked incredibly powerful, as if one wouldn’t have to fear any danger as long as he was around.

"Chief Bei, you wanted to see me?" He Shian asked, standing to the side after glancing at Captain Li.

"Take two squads to Hong Fei Park and clear out the mutant beasts there," Beisang commanded. "Also, I want the park searched thoroughly, inside and out."

"You must eliminate every last mutant beast."

He Shian was somewhat surprised to hear the name Hong Fei Park.
