Sorry, Our Captain Is a True All-Rounder

Chapter 37: Poverty

Chapter 37: Chapter 37: Poverty

"When you have time, you should talk more with the doctors in the medical bay. It’ll be helpful for you," Beisang suggested.

The moment she heard she had to talk with the doctors in the medical bay, Feng He stopped smiling.

The doctors in the medical bay were all snobs who looked down on others, especially people with low ranks like them.

Feng He figured she would rather go feed the pigs than talk to those doctors.

At least pigs didn’t mock or bully anyone.

"Heh, I will," Feng He agreed with a strained smile.

The three young men, who had just returned from crying in the restroom, were stunned to see Beisang awake when they entered.

’She’s already awake?’

Their gazes then fell on Lin Jingjing. She was still lying in her bed, eyes tightly shut, with no sign of waking.

The three of them were visibly disappointed. Sister Lin wasn’t awake yet.

The four of them had been completely useless this time. They’d nearly watched Sister Lin die right before their eyes.

Overwhelmed by self-blame, they stood with dejected expressions and slightly reddened eyes.

Beisang found the scene strange. ’Real men are supposed to shed blood, not tears, so why are their eyes red?’

’Did they think what I did was that impressive?’

"When will Sister Lin wake up?" Shi Feng walked over and asked, a sob in his voice.

"I don’t know." Feng He shook her head. ’Probably not until tomorrow,’ she thought.

Outside, the pitch-black sky was slowly starting to lighten. Dawn was not far off.

The group went nowhere, staying in the room to watch over Lin Jingjing while also attending to Beisang.

If it weren’t for Beisang, Lin Jingjing would have been killed by the mutant beasts long ago.

Beisang was their savior.

Day had broken, but Lin Jingjing was still unconscious. Beisang, watching the others stand motionless like statues, decided to give them something to do.

"You two, go get me some breakfast." She gestured randomly. "I’m hungry."

Mo Xuan and Shi Feng, the ones she had pointed to, glanced at her and replied, "Yes."

After leaving the hospital room, the two headed straight for the cafeteria.

Since they had no Star Coins, they went to the area for free rations and picked up breakfast for everyone.

They watched the long line for the paid options, where people carried trays of tantalizingly fragrant food.

The two quickly looked away. On the way back, Shi Feng’s mind began to churn.

’I have to earn some money. We can’t keep going on like this.’

’How can I make money?’

’What do the soldiers in this camp need most? He had no idea.’

When they got back to the room, they saw that Lin Jingjing was awake.

She was sitting up in bed, looking pale and extremely weak.

Compared to how she’d looked on the battlefield, this was a huge improvement.

"Sister Lin, you’re awake." The moment Shi Feng saw Lin Jingjing was conscious, his voice choked up again.

Lin Jingjing looked at the two of them, a smile on her face. "Sorry for making you worry."

"I won’t be so reckless in the future." ’Ensuring my own survival should be my top priority right now. I got it all wrong, thinking I was so great I could save the entire planet.’

’In the end, I just dragged someone else down with me, and they almost died saving me.’

"As long as you’re awake, you don’t need to apologize for anything," Mo Xuan chimed in.

He then handed out the breakfast to everyone: steamed buns and eggs.

The group was already used to this fare.

Beisang, however, was a bit taken aback as she held the food. ’They still serve this in the cafeteria?’

"Why didn’t you buy something more nutritious?" Beisang asked in confusion, biting into the steamed bun.

"No money," Shi Feng answered honestly.

Beisang paused mid-bite. ’No Star Coins!’

’How is that possible?!’

"Not even one star coin?" Beisang continued to ask.

Four of the five shook their heads. Gu Wenkai explained, "I only have a little over a hundred Star Coins left on me."

They were so utterly poor that even Beisang was stunned.

She stopped chewing the bun and continued to ask, "Isn’t there a subsidy for joining the First Corps?"

’There’s a subsidy?’

’No one told us.’

The five shook their heads in unison. "We didn’t know."

Besides, the First Corps provided room and board, so they hadn’t thought they’d need money and hadn’t worried about it.

"Everyone gets a two-thousand-Star-Coin subsidy upon joining the First Corps. After that, you should receive five to six thousand Star Coins per month," Beisang said, frowning slightly as she looked at them.

"It’s not time to collect the monthly salary yet, but the initial subsidy should have been issued already."

"Did the personnel who recruited you not explain this clearly?"

The five shook their heads. "No. They just gave us a tag and brought us to the logistics department."

’It seems there’s some corruption in the First Corps.’

Beisang immediately opened her Star Ring and sent a message to her adjutant.

[Chief Bei: Go check if the subsidies for new soldiers have been distributed this year.]

[Chief Bei: You have half a day to find out.]

After issuing the order, Beisang went back to her bun. Feng He, ever observant, finished her own food and drank two cups of water, then came over to peel the egg for Beisang.

"Here, Chief Bei." She pressed it into her hand and thoughtfully poured her a cup of water, afraid she might choke.

After all, it’s easy to choke on things like steamed buns and eggs.

Beisang watched her, wondering about the reason for this sudden attentiveness.

"I can do it myself," Beisang said mildly before lowering her head to eat.

Lin Jingjing’s recovery was remarkably fast. After she had spent the morning in the hospital, a doctor examined her and gave the all-clear for her to be discharged.

The moment she heard she could be discharged, Lin Jingjing immediately threw off the covers and got out of the hospital bed.

"See? I told you I was fine," Lin Jingjing said to them. Then, still in her blue and white hospital gown, she jumped up and down twice to prove she was really better.

The others marveled inwardly as they watched her jump around.

’They never expected the medical technology here to be so advanced. Sister Lin had been torn up so badly, yet a single Recovery Potion had restored her.’

In just over a day, she could get out of bed and jump around.

Still, Feng He was a little worried as she watched Lin Jingjing.

"Let me check your pulse." She walked over, grabbed Lin Jingjing’s wrist, and earnestly checked her pulse.

A minute later, Feng He let her go and said with a smile, "You’re really all healed. Aside from some low blood sugar and malnutrition, there’s nothing wrong with you."

"Your constitution is just incredible," Feng He said, reaching out to touch her back, her face filled with envy.

That reminded Lin Jingjing of how her wounds had started healing on their own during the battle.

She didn’t know why, either.

Moreover, she recalled that in her desperation, she had screamed at the mutant beasts to stay away from her.

And with that one shout, the mutant beasts that had been about to reach her had all exploded.

’Was it because of my spiritual power?’
