Chapter 36: Singing Voice
Chapter 36: Chapter 36: Singing Voice
"Chief Bei, you’re awake..." Feng He said, quickly pouring her a glass of warm water. Then, she helped her sit up and fed it to her, bit by bit.
After drinking the water, Chief Bei looked at her, her eyes filled with scrutiny.
"Are you the only one here?" Chief Bei asked.
"Mhm, Admiral He went to deal with post-war matters," Feng He nodded.
Then, Beisang continued, "Were you singing just now?"
"Singing..." Feng He recalled how she had just been holding Lin Jingjing’s hand, unable to stop herself from singing a childhood nursery rhyme to her.
’Did Chief Bei hear me?’
’But didn’t she pass out? How could she have heard?’
’Or... was she already awake?’
Being stared at by Beisang like that, Feng He found it a little hard to bear. The pressure was just too intense.
Even though Beisang’s face was deathly pale, her lips were colorless, and she was wearing a blue and white hospital gown, her gaze was incredibly sharp.
Under her stare, Feng He answered honestly, "It was me."
When she was embarrassed, she would raise a hand to scratch the back of her head, a smile on her face. Feng He explained, "It’s because Sister Lin likes to hear this song."
After getting her answer, Beisang looked at the girl standing before her.
She was small and thin, with long hair tied up high. Her eyes were red and swollen, as if she had just finished crying not long ago.
Clear tear tracks were still visible on her palm-sized face, and she hadn’t treated the bloodstains on her face or the wounds on her body.
Yet it was this girl whose singing could soothe and help regenerate spiritual power.
After Beisang had exhausted her spiritual power and fallen unconscious, her consciousness appeared in her Spirit Sea.
Her Spirit Sea was no longer a vast, blue sea of flowers. In its place were withered plants and dry, cracked earth.
Beisang looked at the devastated Spirit Sea before her and sighed, sitting on the ground.
’It can’t be restored. I can only become an ordinary soldier with no spiritual power.’
The Spirit Sea represented one’s spiritual power. A withered Spirit Sea meant a person’s spiritual power had completely vanished, turning them into an ordinary person.
While Beisang was still grieving, a clear and pleasant voice entered her ears.
In that moment, Beisang froze. By the time the song was halfway through, green shoots slowly began to sprout from the dry land in front of her, gradually spreading outwards.
The speed wasn’t fast, but in just half a minute, green shoots had sprouted all around where she was.
Seeing Beisang staring at her intently, Feng He grew even more nervous.
Her nervousness made her stutter slightly. "Is there something dirty on my face?"
"No."
"You looking at me like that is putting a lot of pressure on me," Feng He muttered under her breath.
Hearing this, Beisang averted her gaze and then said, "Can you sing it again?"
"Sing?" Feng He asked, then answered herself, "Sure, I can."
Then she cleared her throat and began to sing softly.
Feng He’s voice was beautiful and full of spirit. Listening to her sing was like returning to a time without worries.
As Beisang listened, she slowly closed her eyes. Her hair, which had turned pale, was now gradually reverting to its silver color.
But the change was not fast; it was slow.
When she finished singing, Feng He opened her eyes and was surprised by the sight of Beisang’s hair.
"Chief Bei, what’s happening to your hair?" Feng He and the others had never studied anything about this place, usually just getting bits and pieces of random information from the Star Network.
Even though Feng He had spent more than a week in the medical bay before, she still didn’t understand.
"It’s caused by the recovery of my spiritual power," Beisang explained simply.
At the same time, she got her answer. This young girl’s singing truly did have the ability to restore another person’s spiritual power.
’But she’s just a Grade D, yet she possesses such a powerful ability.’
’If anyone else discovered this special trait of hers, it would surely attract a lot of trouble.’
Feng He was overjoyed to hear this. "That’s wonderful! The doctor just now said you might not be able to recover. I was really worried."
’It’s so great that she can recover.’
’Admiral He won’t be sad anymore.’
Feng He was genuinely happy. As long as she could recover, everything would be fine.
"Oh, right." After her moment of happiness, Feng He remembered a serious problem. When she had taken her pulse earlier, she had detected a slow-acting poison in Beisang’s body.
She hurriedly told Beisang about it. "Chief Bei, there’s something I need to tell you." Feng He’s expression was grave.
"What is it?"
"There’s a slow-acting poison in your body that is gradually eroding your health," Feng He said seriously.
She was being slowly poisoned. Hearing this, Beisang’s brows furrowed.
’In the entire First Corps, who on earth would want to poison me to death?’
Beisang’s brow creased. She asked, "Are you sure my body has been poisoned?"
"I’m sure." Feng He nodded firmly, her bright, sparkling eyes full of earnestness.
Seeing her expression, Beisang narrowed her eyes, contemplating the truth of her words.
"This poison has been in your system for quite some time. It has already spread to your vital organs."
"In another two or three years, your body will grow weaker and weaker. By then, the poison will have seeped into your very marrow, and it will be very difficult to treat."
"The only thing awaiting you will be certain death."
Beisang listened. ’So there are still two or three years left.’
’If it really comes to that, I’ll need to choose a qualified person to inherit my position.’
’They must be a person of integrity, consider the people’s welfare, and not bully the weak.’
’I wonder who would be suitable.’
Beisang’s expression didn’t change much upon hearing she was going to die, which made Feng He admire her even more.
’As expected of the chief of the First Corps, to remain so calm even after learning she doesn’t have long to live.’
But what Beisang was thinking about was making arrangements for the First Corps to defend B6 Star from mutant beast invasions, while also using the next two years to find the culprit and kill them.
Seeing her like this, Feng He wrung her hands and asked in a small voice, "Chief Bei, have you not thought about getting treatment?"
"Didn’t you say it has already spread to my vital organs and I only have two or three years left?" Beisang retorted. "Given the circumstances, whether it can be cured at all is a question."
"Actually... I can treat it," Feng He said in a low voice.
In her past life, she had been an excellent surgeon, as well as a brilliant student of traditional Chinese medicine.
Faced with this kind of problem, she would have thumped her chest and guaranteed she could cure the person.
But in this unfamiliar environment, Feng He didn’t dare to make such a bold promise. After all, the medical technology here was incredibly advanced.
"You know medicine?" Beisang was surprised.
"I’ve learned the basics," Feng He replied, scratching her head with a smile.
Looking at her, Beisang said, "Never mind. I’ll just have the doctors run a full physical examination on me."
’To claim she can cure me after only learning "the basics"... she really is quite confident.’
’Confidence is a good thing, but not blind confidence.’
