Chapter 35: Poisoned
Chapter 35: Chapter 35: Poisoned
"I’m fine," Beisang said, shaking her head. But just as the words left her mouth, she coughed up a huge mouthful of blood and collapsed, unconscious.
He Shian caught her, then lifted her into his arms and headed back.
Gu Fei also rushed over, her eyes landing on the unconscious Chief.
She was utterly shocked. Gu Fei pointed a trembling hand at Beisang. "Chief... Is she... dead?"
’Impossible. The Chief is the strongest there is.’
’She could never die!’
He Shian shook his head. "You take care of things here. I’m taking the Chief back for treatment!"
With that, he summoned his Mecha, climbed inside, and blasted off toward the main base at top speed.
As for Lin Jingjing, she had fainted the moment she saw the white mutant beast’s head get chopped off.
Feng He and the others rushed to her side. Feng He immediately checked her pulse and realized Lin Jingjing had lost so much blood that she could die at any moment.
Panicked, Feng He scooped up Lin Jingjing, found a transport vehicle, and sped off in the direction of the main base as well.
The other three hurriedly followed behind them.
They had won the battle against the mutant beasts.
But it had come at a terrible price.
Lin Jingjing lay on a hospital bed while a nurse fed her a bottle of Grade A Recovery Potion. The wounds on her body began to slowly heal.
The four of them stood around the bed, their eyes filled with worry.
In the adjacent bed lay Beisang. Her silver hair had turned completely white, and her face was pale. She looked incredibly weak.
He Shian sat by her bed, his heart aching as he looked at what had become of the Chief.
He lifted his head to look at the four of them, his eyes filled with unconcealable hatred.
If it weren’t for their recklessness, Chief Bei wouldn’t have exhausted her spiritual power to the brink of death just to save one of them.
He was filled with hatred, but as a soldier, all he could do was suppress it.
The group keenly sensed the change in He Shian. They all stood with their heads bowed in silence, their hearts heavy with guilt.
This battle had taught them that the only way to defeat their enemies was to become stronger.
They had been far too naive.
A doctor entered with some instruments to examine Beisang. Afterward, he sighed deeply. "The Chief’s spiritual power is completely depleted," he said. "There’s a high probability she won’t be able to recover it."
"What!" He Shian shot up from his chair in shock.
"Are you saying Chief Bei will become an ordinary person?" He Shian asked, unable to believe it.
"Not necessarily," the doctor said, shaking his head. "It’s just a possibility. If she had managed to retain even a sliver of her spiritual power, she might not have reached this state of total depletion."
The doctor looked at Beisang, his eyes filled with regret and sympathy.
The doctor then checked on Lin Jingjing and found that her regenerative abilities were strong. Her body was slowly repairing itself thanks to the Recovery Potion.
Once the examination was complete, the doctor left the ward. He Shian clenched his fists, his gaze fixed on the unconscious Beisang.
He Shian looked up, his ice-blue eyes devoid of all warmth.
"If you hadn’t acted on your own, thinking you were so clever, Chief Bei would never have ended up like this."
"You bunch of Grade D trash, couldn’t you have just stayed in the logistics department doing menial work?"
"You just had to get involved, didn’t you? Thinking you were some kind of saviors who could rescue all of B6 Star?"
He Shian sneered. "How delusional. You’re nothing but a bunch of trash who awakened Grade D spiritual power."
"Trash should know its place."
Hearing He Shian’s icy words, the group pressed their lips together and bowed their heads, not daring to utter a sound.
They simply stood there and let him belittle and humiliate them.
"Useless trash," He Shian muttered, his mind clouded by rage as he looked at Beisang’s paper-white face.
’An unbearable ache gripped his heart. If the Chief really becomes an ordinary person...’
’She’ll never be able to accept it.’
’The Bei Family will definitely abandon her.’
At this thought, a wave of despair washed over He Shian. His gaze fell back to Beisang.
’Please, let her spiritual power recover quickly. I don’t care if it’s slow, just let it recover.’
He Shian only stayed for a short while before leaving; there was still much work to be done on the front lines.
Only after he had gone did the others slowly begin to speak.
"I need to abandon the superiority complex from my past life," Feng He said. "We aren’t powerful here. We’re just a bunch of trash with Grade D spiritual power."
"Yeah. We have to accept the fact that we’re powerless," Shi Feng added.
They might have been exceptional in their past lives, but in this one, they were not.
The ward fell silent once more. Eventually, Mo Xuan and Gu Wenkai left the room, followed by Shi Feng. Feng He remained seated by the hospital bed.
Tears streamed down her face. Sister Lin had almost left them forever.
’She couldn’t bear to think about how devastated she would be if Sister Lin had really left them.’
Feng He began to cry all over again. Through her sobs, she slowly started to sing a nursery rhyme from her childhood.
"When hardship comes,
Please raise your left hand,
..."
Her voice was clear and melodic, but since she was singing through tears, it lost some of its usual beauty.
Feng He gripped Lin Jingjing’s hand, muttering, "You have to wake up."
On the adjacent bed, as Beisang listened to Feng He’s song, the white hair around her temples slowly began to turn silver again.
Feng He was oblivious to this small change; she only had eyes for Lin Jingjing.
Meanwhile, Lin Jingjing, still unconscious from severe blood loss, found herself lying on a soft, grassy lawn once more.
She was basking in the sunlight and listening to a beautiful song, feeling completely at ease.
The chirping of insects, the buzzing of cicadas, the calls of birds—it all sounded so wonderfully pleasant.
Many trees had sprouted up around her, and next to them was a large lake.
These were all things that hadn’t been there last time.
Lin Jingjing didn’t know why it was different this time, nor did she care to find out.
Lying on the grass with her legs crossed, Lin Jingjing comfortably drifted off into a deep sleep.
When the song ended, Feng He fell silent. She tucked the blanket around Lin Jingjing, then stood and looked over at Beisang. She walked to the other bed and tucked her in as well.
Staring at Beisang’s pale face, Feng He was overwhelmed with guilt.
’She only ended up this way because she saved Lin Jingjing.’
"Thank you, Chief Bei," Feng He said, bowing deeply to the woman on the bed.
Then, she reached out and took Beisang’s hand to check her pulse.
A moment later, her brow furrowed deeply.
’She’s been poisoned.’
’It’s a slow-acting poison, hidden so deep that if not for my medical training, I’d never have detected it from her pulse.’
’Who could be so ruthless as to poison the Chief?’
’They actually want her dead.’
Feng He bit her lower lip and gently placed Beisang’s hand back under the blanket.
’This poison has been in her system for several years. It must have been planned a long time ago.’
’Chief Bei is a celebrated hero of the Empire. How could someone here want her dead?’
’It’s a chilling thought.’
While Feng He was lost in thought, the eyelashes of the woman on the bed trembled, and her eyes slowly fluttered open.
"Chief Bei..." Feng He whispered when she saw Beisang’s eyes open.
