Chapter 1683: Chapter 1086: Heroine of the Republic 60
Winter of 1956
After auditing classes at the County First Middle School for four months, An Hu returned to elementary school to participate in the entrance exam for junior high and successfully got admitted to the County First Middle School.
An Yi saw that this child was somewhat diligent and planned to use this winter to see if she could get him to grade three, because he followed and learned grade one courses with their help, not only keeping up but also ranking in the top twenty in the end-of-term examination, indicating he had grasped everything. With such a long winter vacation, learning grade two courses would be sufficient, allowing him to start grade three after the school term begins. Before turning eighteen, he would be able to graduate from junior high school.
An Hu is now gaining more momentum in his studies, knowing that obtaining a junior high graduation certificate before joining the army would provide a higher starting point than others. For this goal, he gritted his teeth, studying day and night tirelessly, which greatly moved An Yi.
"All the efforts you are making now will one day transform into the fruits of success, Hu Zi. Work hard, and one day, you will make them regret their past negligence."
After the semester ended, before the snow arrived, An Yi repaired a cart in the space, making daily trips to and from the countryside woods to gather firewood, transporting it back to the county home.
Currently, the village operates on a communal system, even during the winter at home, meals are to be had in the communal dining room. All household cooking utensils have been handed over, leaving them only with temporary cookwares like tile jars. On the county side, there’s only one iron pot, thus after weighing the options, they chose to stay in the county.
Last year, 75 yuan’s worth of fertilizer money exchanged for 1,442 pounds of corn (with husk), which they had to husk and thresh themselves. It’s estimated that what remains after these processes is 1,200 pounds or perhaps even less. Besides, their family’s basic rations were also converted into grains.
Hu Zi has 360 pounds, each of them 288 pounds, totaling 864 pounds for three people, the two children’s yearly intake 360 pounds, making it 1,584 pounds altogether.
Though she does not teach at the village elementary school, she still gets half a centimeter counted annually for the two plots of land she handed over, later An Yi felt embarrassed and asked the village chief to give her the equivalent of 360 pounds of basic rations.
Thus, after this year’s autumn harvest, their family received a total of 3,386 pounds of grains with husk and shell. After threshing, husking, and milling into powder, they would probably get around 2,600 pounds. It’s mainly miscellaneous grains like corn, sweet potato, and sorghum, with fine grains adding up to merely about one hundred pounds.
All these grains were transported to their countryside home, and An Yi planned to find someone with a tractor to bring them to the county, while in reality, she planned to use space teleportation directly. After all, with such a large quantity of grains, relying solely on a cart would require around ten trips, making space teleportation much more time-efficient and labor-saving.
Once An Yi put forth cash and tickets for them to shop at the department store while they weren’t home, she transferred the grains, firewood, and vegetables back to their county home.
The first snow arrived quietly in mid-November, before they knew it, five to six years had passed, ushering in the challenging year of 1957.
During the winter rest, the An family was peaceful. An Hu, Anna, and Angel were studying in the west room of the hall, while An Yi played, drew graffiti, and told stories with her two daughters in the east room. When it was time to eat, they continued their studies while she cooked with the two kids in the hall, without disrupting each other.
By the end of this year, her savings exceeded 7,000 yuan, with the major reason for uninterrupted accumulation being the rich resources within her space, rarely necessitating expenses.
While others needed to spend money even for a box of matches or a pound of salt, she only needed to check the space to get what she needed, enabling her savings to surpass 7,000 in such a short period.
An Ran had already turned three this year, with Anning a little over two, the two long-term nursery kids showed increased adaptability and learned a great deal, as nursery teachers were experienced moms with a lot of patience, saving her plenty of effort.
This year, Hu Zi still wanted to go fishing but was stopped by An Yi: "Stay home and study obediently, our family’s demands for food aren’t high, but you can’t waste time like this, study well at home and graduate junior high sooner, so you can enlist in the army earlier."
Although there weren’t as many fish as last year in the space, the mother cow had been slaughtered as the young female cow grew up and gave birth to a little cow, allowing the mother cow a deserving retirement.
Beef was a rarity in this era, with An Yi daring not to bring it out openly, instead cutting small pieces during meals, or making beef jerky in space, providing them with something to chew on when studying late into the night.
