Chapter 1680: Chapter 1085: Heroine of the Republic 59

For a moment, An Yi thought she had been exposed, but upon careful consideration, she realized he was actually protecting her in a way.

With his abilities and contributions, he must have seen many doctors, including some authoritative institutions. But what others couldn’t accomplish, she, a mere teacher from the county, did. How would he perceive her?

If she were to continue being his soldier without feeling guilty, it doesn’t mean that keeping silent about who treated his illness will allow things to remain peaceful.

Though the chaos of these years isn’t very apparent, people within the system might feel it more profoundly. There must be many patients like him around him, so what would he say?

If he speaks, her peaceful life will be disrupted; if he doesn’t, how will his comrades see him?

Unexpectedly, this man had such a meticulous side; from the moment he regained consciousness till now, he must have thought about many things.

An Yi wanted to say, "Don’t worry about me," but when the words reached her mouth, she couldn’t say them. Because she also didn’t want her peaceful life to be disturbed.

Using Golden Finger and Superpower to treat illnesses works for one or two cases, but if people start lining up, exposure is inevitable. When that time comes, she can’t even imagine how she’d be treated. Therefore, she accepted this friendship, thanking him sincerely: "Thank you."

Qin Zheng replied casually, "No need to thank me. Strictly speaking, you saved my life; I owe you a lot more than this."

An Yi was equally nonchalant: "I don’t lack money, and since you won’t be fighting on the front line anymore, let’s say you owe me a personal favor. If you become successful in the future, lend me a hand."

Both were wise individuals; speaking openly eased their tensions, but Gu Cheng on the side seemed displeased.

He glared at An Yi: "Wait, what’s your point? Why not ask him for money? I’m telling you, this guy earns quite a bit and can definitely afford it."

An Yi interrupted with a smile: "Once he transitions to a local position, he’ll hold some authority, helping me when necessary. If you had that ability, I’d return your gold bars to you."

Gu Cheng found An Yi’s calculating expression irritating yet oddly likable, wondering if there was something wrong with himself.

"Are you looking down on us, the working class?"

So what if he cleans toilets and sweeps streets? It doesn’t change the fact that countless young women and wives secretly watch him.

"Who would dare look down on you? But while you’re going about your cleaning duties, who will take care of your buddy? His condition requires him to stay with me for at least half a month. My son isn’t home every day, and I have work too."

"Oh, don’t worry, I’ve already taken leave to care for him during this time. However, is he really better?"

Even though he introduced them, Gu Cheng still found it somewhat surreal, until An Yi showed them the removed shrapnel and bullets. Their identical expressions of awe gave her a sense of accomplishment.

"These truths are understood without being spoken. This is a one-time thing, don’t bring me such trouble again. I’m just a teacher now."

Qin Zheng nodded slightly to her, his voice cold and slightly hoarse, but full of sincerity.

"Thank you; otherwise, my life would’ve truly been hanging by a thread."

An Yi waved: "I helped out because I admire you all. Gu Cheng, you won’t be sweeping streets forever; consider this a time to lay low."

Though she doesn’t yet understand whether Gu Cheng’s current situation is due to organizational needs, his own willingness, or being framed, it doesn’t erase the contributions he once made.

Once An Yi left, Qin Zheng looked at Gu Cheng with an unusually sharp gaze.

"She lives very transparently; she seems to have many secrets. How did you two meet?"

After Gu Cheng finished recounting their encounter, Qin Zheng pondered the words carefully: "Tell me, does she know what you used to do?"

Gu Cheng nodded: "She knows, and even described where I operated clearly. Though not entirely, it shocked me greatly. Sometimes I wonder if she was ever one of us."

Gu Cheng’s words led Qin Zheng to deep contemplation. After a moment, he spoke with his slightly pale face.

"Her remarkable medical skills can’t be faked. In such adverse circumstances, she managed to awaken me, proving her skills are exceptional. The hardships she faced during wartime likely equal to ours. Besides, I feel like her beautiful eyes don’t seem to belong on such a nonchalant face. She’s not simple. As the saying goes, heroes aren’t judged by their origins. You, me, and her are alike. Just leave things as they are; if she doesn’t speak of it, neither will we."
