She Lives without Regret in This Life

"No need." Gu Sinian refused. Clearly he was still a boy not yet twenty, but his expression was already cold and paranoid. "With Meng Fan backing her up, we really can’t just move against her casually."

From his tone, he sounded rather disappointed.

Overnight everything changed. This girl really was quite capable. How did she manage to catch Meng Fan’s eye? His own younger sister had chased him for so many years and couldn’t even get a proper sentence out of him.

"Do you want to change clothes now?" the big man asked.

"No." Obviously repulsed, Gu Sinian still didn’t explode in rage the way the big man feared he would. He was the heir of the Gu Family, his temperament had been moody and unpredictable since childhood.

The Gu Family was different from the others. Everyone in the family had to struggle for their own future, only the heir didn’t. What the heir had to learn was how to control a huge family.

That afternoon Sheng Ning had gone around to several places and came back disappointed. She really wasn’t cut out for business, and right now there hadn’t been reform and opening yet, so job opportunities were extremely scarce. The few that existed were all state-owned; without connections you couldn’t get in.

When she returned to the Meng Family that night, she unexpectedly saw a woman sitting in the living room reading a newspaper. Dressed formally, her jet-black hair pinned up, neat and sharp.

She looked very young, seemingly not yet forty.

Su Yun.

Sheng Ning recognized her at a glance, she still looked the same as in her memory, but her mindset would never again be like in her previous life. After entering, she looked at Su Yun, and a trace of disdain flashed in her eyes.

She rejected from the bottom of her heart anyone who abandoned husband and daughter. At the same time she felt it was unfair for Sheng Ning: while Su Yun basked in the glory of being the President’s wife and fawned over two stepsons, had she ever felt any pain for the daughter she’d abandoned?

Su Yun’s willow-leaf brows shot up, and she looked rather unhappily at the girl in front of her.

"Who is she? How can you let a stranger into my home?" Su Yun asked sharply.

Sister Fang hurriedly answered, "This is Gu Yunbo, she’s..."

Before Sister Fang could finish, Su Yun’s voice cut in, shrill and sharp. "Sister Fang, how could you let a murderer into our home? You are far too negligent, you must write a self-criticism."

"Chief, it wasn’t me."

"Drive her out, immediately. We can’t afford to provoke an ungrateful white-eyed wolf in our family." When she came back she’d already heard about Ping Guo Fei’s foster girl almost strangling his biological daughter. She hadn’t quite believed it at the time, but now that she’d seen the villagers she instantly believed it.

The girl before her had an unkind look in her eyes and a nasty attitude, making Su Yun dislike her from the bottom of her heart.

"But Meng Fan has already agreed." Sister Fang said, troubled. The Chief wanted to kick her out, but without Meng Fan’s consent she didn’t dare. Everyone knew the one who really ran this household was Meng Fan, then the President, and only then the Chief.

"What?" Su Yun’s voice grew even shriller, her eyes wary as she looked at Gu Yunbo, as if she were looking at a romantic rival. "You’re saying Meng Fan agreed? Impossible."

Gu Yunbo sighed and quietly counted, realizing she actually had quite a lot of enemies.

Besieged on all sides.

"I’ll move out right away." She nodded to Sister Fang. "I’ll go upstairs and pack my things." After speaking, she didn’t spare Su Yun a glance and went straight upstairs.

She moved as if she knew the place like the back of her hand, as natural as if she’d gone back to her own home.

"So rude, really..."

"Please stop, Chief." Sister Fang rushed to persuade her. "If you do this and Meng Fan comes back to find her gone, he will be angry."

Su Yun sat down on the sofa, a little worried. "No way, right? I’m doing this for Meng Fan’s own good. We can’t keep such a dangerous girl in our home."

"He definitely will." Sister Fang said firmly.

"Then what should I do?" Su Yun knew better than anyone that as a wife, her position in her husband’s heart couldn’t compare to that of his heir.

Being a stepmother was never easy. All these years she’d always treated the two stepsons with extreme caution. Although the two boys weren’t close to her, they at least maintained appearances; the proper courtesies were all there.

But these courtesies were based on her never crossing their bottom line.
