The carriage was forced to stop, and Ah Chen asked the driver, "What’s wrong?"

"Miss Qin, Mr. Shen’s men have blocked the carriage, I don’t know what’s going on." The driver’s voice was somewhat shaky; with what little he’d seen of the world, these men of Mr. Shen looked ill-tempered — it seemed trouble was coming.

"Miss Qin, our young master is returning to the Capital City, and has specially come to invite you to travel with him." The guard captain’s voice rang out. His tone was polite, but if one listened closely, there was a meaning in it that brooked no refusal.

Seeing that Ah Chen did not answer, the guard captain roughly lifted the carriage curtain, the blade in his hand gleaming coldly. His chilly voice sounded: "Miss Qin, sit tight."

With that, he let the curtain fall, then sat next to the driver. The driver did not dare disobey and could only turn the carriage around and urge on the horses in a different direction.

Just like that, Ah Chen’s carriage headed toward the Capital City.

The purpose of this trip had already been fulfilled, and Ah Chen sat quietly in the carriage.

In fact, there was another man entangled with the Commissioner, namely Yin Guan, the general’s son stationed with his Great General father guarding the Border.

However, Yin Guan had never done anything to the Commissioner, nor was he a Reincarnator. The two met because the Commissioner escaped from Shen Si’an and happened to be saved by Yin Guan, thus gaining a period of relatively carefree days.

During the days on the road back to the Capital City, the Commissioner and Yin Guan actually developed mutual affection. She couldn’t help harboring some expectations in her heart: if she ended up with Yin Guan, perhaps the others would give up.

She simply didn’t know how much the others wanted to possess her — especially the Seventh Prince Pei Hui, and Mo Ying, who saw her as a precious cure. There was absolutely no way they would let her go.

Pei Hui, this Reincarnator, already occupied a high position by nature.

Yin Guan resisted, but even though he was upright and wanted to help the Commissioner break free of those entanglements, he could not ignore his entire clan. In the end, he could only give up.

Of course, the Commissioner never blamed Yin Guan; she understood that he, like her, was at the mercy of circumstances. If he had been willing to harm his entire family for her alone, then he wouldn’t be the Yin Guan she knew.

Yin Guan was able to keep his bottom line: he did not throw in his lot with the others to bully her, and even up until before her death, he never took a wife, still finding chances to sneak a look at her. That was enough to prove he was a man of feeling and loyalty. Not marrying did not necessarily mean deep love; it might also be guilt in his heart.

Therefore, this time Ah Chen was here for Shen Si’an alone.

As for Yin Guan, she was not the Commissioner; he bore no personal hatred toward her, and as the general’s son he wasn’t involved in this matter. Presumably his future would be fine.

She would not allow Pei Hui to ascend to that seat. Yin Guan’s entire family were loyal subjects; nothing would happen to them.

Ah Chen returned with Shen Si’an because, in truth, her goal was already achieved and it was time to go back and watch the show. If she went back alone, she’d still have to deal with trivialities herself; going with Shen Si’an meant his people would arrange every bit of the journey’s minutiae clearly.

Seeing that she didn’t make trouble the whole way, Shen Si’an’s mood improved somewhat.

To prevent discontent among his subordinates, he even took pains to placate them; those who survived all received rewards, and were settled.

The news that Ah Chen had been seized by Shen Si’an and taken back to the Capital City quickly reached Pei Hui.

Pei Hui read the latest report, his brows tightly knitted.

"Since Shen Si’an hasn’t done anything to her for the time being, there’s no need to take any measures yet. We’ll wait until they enter the Capital City."

"This Shen Si’an is acting a bit off. Could it be..." Before he finished, Ye Shuangzhou already heard what was implied.

Ye Shuangzhou said, "It’s not completely certain yet. We’ll only know once he’s entered the Capital City."

They both knew Shen Si’an’s ending in the previous lifetime, so it was easy to determine whether he was a Reincarnator.

In fact, the two were already nearly sure; after all, Shen Si’an had captured Qin Chen, most likely because he was aware of Qin Chen’s uniqueness.

When business was done, Ye Shuangzhou suddenly said, "Your Highness, it’s time to take your pulse."

Pei Hui’s face instantly turned black as the bottom of a pot, but thinking of the situation now, he still extended his hand.

A glint of amusement flashed in Ye Shuangzhou’s eyes, then he carefully took the pulse.

"Your Highness’s body is in excellent condition." He praised once. He had taken the pulse of pregnant women before, but this was his first time examining a pregnant man; His Highness’s body was far healthier than that of most pregnant women — and so was the fetus.

He wondered, when this child was born, how His Highness planned to handle it.

And how was it going to be born?

Ye Shuangzhou’s inner curiosity grew larger and larger. It was only because this was Pei Hui that he kept so restrained; if it were someone else, he wouldn’t be so controlled.

Pei Hui, however, looked somewhat like he’d lost the will to live. He couldn’t beat it out of existence, and there was nothing he could do.

"It’s already starting to show. Your Highness will need to make proper arrangements; for the next half year or more, you cannot appear in front of people." Ye Shuangzhou reminded. After all, he was on Pei Hui’s side, and didn’t want the situation exposed — it would be extremely troublesome for him.

Pei Hui spoke through clenched teeth: "I’ve already arranged it. If some emergency absolutely requires an appearance, I’ll send a double."

Vanishing for more than half a year — of course he had to prepare a stand-in; otherwise people would grow suspicious.

But when he thought of his own situation, Pei Hui felt unbearably stifled inside.

He, a dignified man, was now pregnant, and could only carry the child to term.

Having finished their discussion, the two walked out.

A man at Ye Shuangzhou’s side hurried over, a letter in his hand.

After the attendant withdrew, Ye Shuangzhou tore the letter open. Seeing the contents, he froze for a moment, drawing Pei Hui’s attention.

"What’s happened?"

"Don’t tell me you’ve been away too long and Medicine King Valley has been razed?" Pei Hui asked again, his mood brightening a little.

Ye Shuangzhou shook his head. "No. The master of Shadowless Building went to Medicine King Valley for help; apparently he’s contracted a strange illness."

He didn’t know what kind of strange illness this was, to have gone to seek out Mo Ying.

Ever since Qin Chen left, Mo Ying had cleansed Shadowless Building from top to bottom; Ye Shuangzhou had no idea what the situation inside was now.

"Could it be that he can’t find Qin Chen and wants his illness cured?" Pei Hui thought aloud.

Ye Shuangzhou shook his head. "It doesn’t look like that. Even my master couldn’t cure that illness; apart from Qin Chen there is no antidote. I’d say something else must have gone wrong in the meantime. The Jianghu is dangerous by nature; anything can happen."

"Mo Ying is offering a good consultation fee, and I’m curious what kind of illness he’s contracted. Things are stable enough with Your Highness for now; I’ll go take a look first."

Pei Hui didn’t stop him. In a few days he would have to pretend to be sick and disappear from public view; before it was time to give birth, he could manage without Ye Shuangzhou at his side. It was just that thinking of his own situation, he couldn’t help feeling depressed — to this day he still hadn’t found the person who had struck him in secret.

Utterly vile, utterly hateful.

If he ever did find them, he would surely tear them to pieces.

On Ah Chen’s side, she had already arrived in Mei County.

The Qin Family had likely been brought to the Capital City, so she had no intention of going to Meihua Village.

They had been hurrying along for some time, and decided to rest for a bit in Mei County. Passing by that pharmacy, Ah Chen lifted the curtain and glanced inside, but did not see Jiang Xun; she didn’t know whether he was still in Mei County at this time.

But within half a day she heard that Jiang Xun had made a name for himself in Mei County.

Some time ago, for reasons unknown, people all over Mei County were coming down with a cold from the wind; in this era, such chills could be fatal.

Fortunately, Jiang Xun appeared at the critical moment and resolved the problem. In short, now whenever the people of Mei County mentioned Doctor Jiang, their faces were full of gratitude.

She heard that Jiang Xun had not yet left and was still in Mei County, though he seemed about to depart, and many people were reluctant to see him go.

That night, Jiang Xun appeared in the room at the inn where Ah Chen was staying.

He had learned that Qin Chen was here only because one of the pharmacy clerks happened to see Ah Chen earlier and, knowing she was acquainted with Jiang Xun, mentioned it.

Jiang Xun felt that something was off, and seeing that many people were following Ah Chen — not as attendants serving her, but as watchers — he sensed something was wrong.

But when he saw the woman inside the room, unharmed, sitting under the lamp reading, Jiang Xun knew he’d been overthinking.

"It’s been several months since we parted. Has Miss Qin been well?"

Ah Chen lifted her head. "Very well. Doctor Jiang, what brings you visiting so late?"

Jiang Xun smiled and sat down to the side. "One of the clerks at the pharmacy said there was someone who looked like Miss Qin."

"As long as you’re fine."

"The Qin Family has already been taken to the Capital City."

Ah Chen nodded slightly. "I expected as much."

"Are you heading to the Capital City?"

Ah Chen said, "Mm. I heard Doctor Jiang is leaving Mei County and wondered where you were going."

"To the Capital City as well." Jiang Xun fell silent for a moment, then said, "To resolve some private matters."

Ah Chen guessed it had to do with Ye Shuangzhou, but did not probe further.

In the second cycle, if it hadn’t been for the Commissioner’s special constitution helping purge toxins, Ye Shuangzhou would have fallen into Jiang Xun’s hands long ago.
