She Came to Heal, Stayed to Conquer
Chapter 230 - 151: Heartache Just Thinking About It
Mr. Wei felt a tightness in his heart, yet his expression remained unchanged.
He replied humbly, "Your Majesty exaggerates. My son is merely engaging in small business activities, hardly worthy of praise for prosperity."
Emperor Jing nodded lightly, seemingly indifferent to Mr. Wei’s modesty.
Emperor Jing continued, "I also heard that Wei Chengchao is preparing to open a clothing shop. The shopfront is the largest store the Wei Family purchased a few years ago. Is this true?"
Mr. Wei’s heart sank, feeling uncomfortable all over, as if he were standing naked before Emperor Jing, with no privacy at all.
What does it mean to hear? To be told?
It’s merely the suspicious Emperor Jing sending Hidden Guards to monitor every corner of the Capital City for information.
Indeed, His Majesty trusts no one! Including his Prime Minister.
Mr. Wei felt extremely uneasy inside, but still maintained a respectful demeanor.
"Your Majesty is well-informed, it’s true my son has this plan, but the specific date hasn’t been set; it’s just a preliminary preparation."
Emperor Jing smiled faintly, his tone carrying subtle implications.
"There’s no need for concern, Mr. Wei. I was merely asking casually. Now that peace reigns across the land with no wartime disruptions, I too feel more relaxed. How about when your son’s new shop opens, I accompany you to take a look and also present a congratulatory gift, how does that sound?"
Mr. Wei felt a chill. He did not feel pleased by Emperor Jing’s concern; instead, he felt as though he was being watched.
He dared not show any hesitation and quickly bowed and replied, "Your Majesty’s kindness is immense, and I thank you on behalf of my son. But how could such a small shop dare to trouble Your Majesty with a visit?"
Emperor Jing waved his hand, his tone relaxing, "It’s nothing, I just want to see the bustling scenes of the Capital City and have a break. Mr. Wei, you don’t need to decline; it’s settled."
Mr. Wei had no choice but to nod in agreement, yet his heart felt as though weighed down by a heavy stone.
Although Emperor Jing spoke lightly, Mr. Wei could sense his gaze was sharp like a knife, as if seeing through his entire family.
He sighed inwardly, "Alas! Serving the Emperor is like serving a tiger, it seems I must act even more cautiously in the future, ensuring no mistakes whatsoever."
Emperor Jing saw Mr. Wei’s respectful demeanor, apparently without any irregularity, and waved his hand, "Alright, Mr. Wei, if there’s nothing else, you may leave now."
Mr. Wei bowed once more, "I take my leave." With that, he slowly exited the main hall.
Outside the hall doors, the warm sunlight shone on Mr. Wei, but his heart remained icy cold.
As Mr. Wei walked, he speculated about Emperor Jing’s true intentions in showing concern for him. He did not yet know that half a month ago, his nephew Wei Dabao had used carrier pigeons to send him a letter...
At that moment, Wei Dabao was pacing back and forth in the house in Qingshui County.
His brow furrowed, hands behind his back, occasionally lifting his gaze to the sky outside the window, as if awaiting something.
Having indulged in rich foods at home for over ten days, all his weight had returned. His footsteps were heavy and swift, causing the floorboard of the loft to creak "creak creak."
His wife sat beside him, rocking lightly on a chair, holding a lazy cat, and cast him a cold glance.
"I say, can you stop pacing back and forth? It’s making me dizzy."
Finally unable to hold back, his wife spoke, with a hint of impatience in her voice.
Wei Dabao halted, turned his head, his face somewhat grim.
"What do you understand? My heart is burning with anxiety; I have no leisure to sit!"
The letter to his uncle was sent to the Capital City in mid-April. Whether sent by carrier pigeon or horseback, it should have arrived long ago.
But until today, Luo Hai, that bastard, remains firmly seated in the position of County Magistrate. "The Great Treasure" can only watch helplessly as that bastard excavates daily.
Those are treasures!
Excavating one day means one less piece!
Wei Dabao felt heartache just thinking about it.
His wife snorted lightly, stroking the cat in her arms, saying indifferently, "What’s the use of being anxious? If there’s no news from your uncle, jumping around wouldn’t help."
Wei Dabao scratched his head in frustration, "It’s been half a month, why isn’t there any movement from my uncle? If this continues, the treasure will be dug up entirely by the County Magistrate Luo."
His wife ignored him, lowering her head to play with the cat, as if the situation was unrelated to her.
Wei Dabao, seeing this, felt even more irritated and suddenly slammed the table, causing the teacup on it to clatter.
"Zhang San! Li!" he shouted loudly, his voice filled with anxiety and severity.
Soon enough, Zhang San and Li hurried in, wearing ingratiating smiles, bowing and scraping as they asked, "Master, what are your orders?"
