Shadow Monarch in DC
Chapter 612: The Heavenly War
The sky tore open.
It was not a Boom Tube, not a portal, not any manner of dimensional tear the Monarchs had seen before. It was a wound, a clean, vertical slash in the fabric of reality, its edges glowing with pale, colorless light. And through that wound, they came.
Heavenly soldiers by the hundreds of thousands.
Their wings unfurled in perfect unison, each one a mirror of the others, their spans blocking out the shifting colors of the sky. Light-helberds gleamed in their hands, weapons forged from the World Tree’s own branches, capable of cutting through anything the Monarchs could field. Their armor was identical, their faces hidden behind masks of pale silver, their movements so synchronized they seemed less like an army and more like a single, vast organism.
They descended in silence.
The armies of the Monarchs, ice elves, beast-kin, giants, insectoid horrors, shadow soldiers, and the others waited. This was not the horde of mindless monsters they had expected. This was something terrible and something beautiful in its absolute, unwavering order.
Raven’s voice was quiet as she watched the sky fill with wings. "There are so many."
"More than we thought," Zatanna said, her golden eyes flicking from soldier to soldier, counting. "Much more."
Beast Boy’s hands tightened at his sides. "This is a swarm.."
Frost said nothing. She just stared, her jaw tight.
Superman stepped forward, his eyes scanning the descending legions. "They’re not attacking, they’re forming ranks... they are actually very well disciplined."
"Of course they are," Arthur said, calm as ever. "They’ll do this properly as usual."
Kara turned to him. "Properly?"
Arthur nodded, his gaze fixed on the pale light at the center of the heavenly host. "The Rulers take war very seriously. They have rules. Customs. Ceremonies. They won’t just charge in like animals. They’ll give us a chance to surrender first."
As if on cue, a single figure descended from the heart of the Rulers’ army, not a soldier, not a champion, but something smaller, robed in white, its feet touching the ground lightly as it landed in the space between the two armies.
A messenger.
Its voice carried across the plains, not loud, but perfectly clear, a sound that seemed to bypass the ears entirely and settle directly into the minds of everyone present.
"Hear me, Monarchs of Darkness. You stand before the judgment of the Rulers. Their mercy is vast, but it is not infinite."
Kara’s hand found Arthur’s arm. He didn’t move.
The messenger continued. "Surrender, Arthur Blackwynd the Shadow Monarch, and submit yourselves to judgment. Return the powers you have stolen to their rightful keepers. Abandon your thrones and your armies. Do this, and you will be spared. Your worlds will be left in peace. Your lives will be permitted to continue."
He paused.
"Refuse, and the Rulers will unleash something far worse than just this army. Something that does not negotiate."
The messenger’s blank gaze swept across the assembled Monarchs.
"This is the only offer you will receive."
Silence fell.
Superman looked at Arthur. "They’re arrogant, I’ll give you that."
"They always were," Arthur said.
He stepped forward, his cosmic shadow armor forming around him, his ashen hair whipping in the wind. His voice, when it came, was just as clear as the messenger’s, and much colder.
"Tell your masters this: I have nothing to return. Nothing was stolen. The powers I gave were earned, by my hand, from my enemies, and by the ones who now hold them. If the Rulers wish to speak with me, they can come down here themselves. If they wish to judge me, they can try."
He paused.
"But if they send a single soldier against my family or my world ever again, I will not stop at defeating them. I will erase their essence and cast it into my abyss. I will make sure there is nothing left to grow back."
The messenger tilted its head. For the briefest moment, something flickered behind its blank eyes, fear.
Then it vanished in a flash of pale light.
Raven’s voice was quiet. "That was a threat they’ll remember."
"Good," Arthur said. "I wanted it to be."
The Rulers’ army shifted.
Another figure stepped forward from the ranks, he was taller, its wings were broader, its armor much more refined, its light-helberd longer and heavier. Its mask was different, that pulsed with cold white light.
A Champion. One of their Collectors.
Its voice carried across the battlefield like the tolling of a bell.
"The Rulers acknowledge your refusal, Shadow Monarch. In accordance with the ancient customs of war, we offer you one final chance before the battle is joined. Send forth your finest warrior, the victor will determine the fate of the defeated."
It paused.
"If your champion wins the choice is yours to make, we will withdraw if you wish. No further blood will be shed on this field or any other. If your champion loses, you will surrender the Monarchs to judgment, or be destroyed where you stand."
Arthur’s smile was small.
Superman stepped forward, his voice urgent. "Arthur, this is obviously a trap. They wouldn’t offer a duel unless they thought their champion could win."
"Of course they wouldn’t," Arthur said. "They’ve chosen their strongest for this."
"Then send your strongest," Frost said. "One of us can.."
"No." Arthur raised a hand. "This is their custom. And I will respect it, because it’s also an opportunity."
He turned, his gaze sweeping across his Marshals.
"Bellion."
The Grand Marshal stepped forward from the shadows, his form coalescing out of the dark like a living thing. His sword was already in his hand, its edge gleaming with violet light, his eyes burning with the same fire as his monarch’s.
"My Monarch."
"You will be my champion," Arthur said. "And you will not hold back. You will send a clear message to the armies of the Rulers, and raise the morale of our own."
Bellion bowed his head. "As you command."
He descended from the plateau, his form moving through the ranks of the gathered armies with grace of a commander. The ice elves parted for him. The beast-kin fell silent. Even the giants, stepped back.
He landed on the field between the two armies.
The Rulers’ Champion descended to meet him.
They looked almost the same, two beings of the same race, two heavenly soldiers separated by eons and choices and the side of a war. But where the Champion’s armor gleamed with pale silver light, Bellion’s was forged of shadow. Where the Champion’s eyes burned white, Bellion’s burned violet.
The Champion tilted its head.
"You are one of us," it said. "A son of the World Tree. Why do you fight for the darkness?"
Bellion’s voice was flat. "You’ll never understand so why should I bother explain my choices."
The Champion raised its helberd.
Bellion raised his sword.
The armies held their breath.
And the duel began.
They clashed in the center of the field, and the impact shook the ground.
The Champion moved first, faster than any soldier on either side could track, its helberd carving a silver arc through the air. Bellion met it with his sword, the parry sending sparks cascading across the plains. The Champion spun, driving a knee toward Bellion’s chest. Bellion caught it with his forearm, twisted, and slammed the Champion backward with a shove that cratered the ground beneath its feet.
The Rulers’ army watched in silence.
The Monarchs’ army roared.
The Champion recovered quickly, its wings snapping open as it launched into the air. Its helberd came down in an overhead strike meant to split Bellion in two. Bellion sidestepped, the blade missing him by inches, and answered with a lightning-fast stab toward the Champion’s throat.
The Champion leaned back, barely avoiding it, then countered with a wing-buffet that sent Bellion skidding backward. Before he could steady himself, the Champion was already on him a blur of silver and pale light, its helberd carving a storm of strikes that forced Bellion onto the back foot.
For a long moment, Bellion gave ground. The Champion pressed its advantage, its attacks relentless, its style perfect. Each strike had no emotion, no hesitation. It was the fighting style of a being that had spent eons perfecting it.
The Rulers’ army stirred, sensing victory.
Then Bellion stopped retreating.
He planted his feet, caught the Champion’s next strike on his blade, and held. The two of them locked in place, blade against blade, strength against strength. The ground beneath them cracked and split, fissures racing outward in every direction.
The Champion’s voice was quiet, for Bellion alone. "You cannot win. We are the same. But I have the World Tree behind me. You have only shadows and the power of your monarch to keep you standing."
Bellion’s mouth curved, just slightly.
"That’s just enough."
He twisted his blade.
The Champion’s helberd shattered.
Before it could react, Bellion drove his sword forward a single, perfect thrust that punched through the Champion’s chest plate and out the other side. The Champion stared at him, its white eyes widening in surprise.
Bellion leaned in close.
"You asked why I fight for the darkness," he said. "Because the darkness chose me. And you never chose anything, you are only born for the purpose of war."
He pulled his sword free.
The Champion fell to its knees.
Bellion stepped back, raised his blade, and brought it down in a single, clean arc.
The Champion’s head separated from its body and rolled across the field, coming to rest at the feet of the Rulers’ army.
The silence was absolute.
Bellion sheathed his sword.
He turned and walked back toward the Monarchs’ lines without looking back not at the body, not at the army, not at the thousand pairs of eyes fixed on him.
The Monarchs’ army erupted.
The roar was deafening, beast-kin howling, ice elves singing, giants pounding their fists against their chests, shadow soldiers raising their weapons in silent salute.
Arthur watched it all from the plateau, his smile small and satisfied.
He raised one hand, the roar died instantly.
Every soldier, every creature, every shadow turned to face him.
Arthur lowered his hand.
"Attack."
