Sunlight shone into the room, making the bedroom both bright and warm.

Adrian Lancaster was propped up against the headboard, two soft pillows behind his back and a blanket covering his legs.

He held a book in his hands, casually flipping through it to pass the time.

So as not to disturb his rest, the nanny was playing with Owen and Nina in the living room downstairs.

Vaguely hearing the happy laughter and babbling from downstairs, Adrian was tempted several times to throw off the blanket, get out of bed, go downstairs, and walk around freely.

But in the end, he resisted the urge. He was afraid Wren Sutton would find out when she got back and be upset.

The minutes ticked by.

Suddenly, familiar footsteps sounded at the door, and a moment later, it was pushed open.

Adrian Lancaster looked up, his heart soaring. She was finally back.

"Honey, you’re finally back."

Wren Sutton walked to the bedside with a beaming smile, holding a small bowl filled with all sorts of fried goodies.

She sat down beside Adrian.

"My mom just fried these. I brought back a bunch, so I picked out a few of each for you to try."

The rich, savory aroma of fried food filled the air.

"It smells amazing," Adrian said, swallowing.

"It tastes even better."

As she spoke, Wren picked up a piece of crispy fried pork with her chopsticks and held it to his lips.

Adrian leaned forward and took a bite. As he chewed slowly, the flavor spread through his mouth, bringing an indescribable sense of satisfaction.

He nodded and gave her a heartfelt thumbs-up.

"Mom’s cooking is still the best. Nothing you buy outside can compare."

Wren felt a swell of happiness. She picked up a fritter and gently fed it to Adrian.

"Try this radish fritter, too. It’s vegetarian, but it’s delicious and super crispy."

Adrian swallowed it in one bite, the savory taste lingering in his mouth.

He ate with great relish, full of praise.

"Delicious."

Wren’s eyes were gentle. "There’s also fried fish, stuffed eggplant, and stuffed lotus root. You can only have one of each."

"You’re still recovering, so you can’t have too much greasy food. Just a few bites to satisfy your craving is enough."

"Once this period is over, you can eat as much as you want."

Adrian nodded obediently.

"Okay, I’ll listen to you. If you tell me to eat, I’ll eat. If you tell me not to, I won’t."

Wren was amused by his well-behaved and sensible demeanor, feeling completely content.

Then, she ladled a small bowl of pork rib soup for him, blew on it to test the temperature, and placed it within his reach.

"That’s enough of the fried food for now. You can have more of this soup, though."

"Okay."

Adrian leaned against the headboard, leisurely scooping up a spoonful of soup and bringing it to Wren’s lips.

"Honey, you have the first sip. Then I’ll drink."

Wren didn’t refuse and took the sip.

The two exchanged a warm smile, the atmosphere tender.

"Go on, drink it. I brought it especially for you."

Adrian obediently started to drink. The soup was fresh and rich, mellow without being greasy. As it slid down his throat, a sense of comfort spread through his entire body.

"It’s delicious. Thank Mom for me."

Time flowed by slowly. In the sun-drenched room, the two chatted and kept each other company, their simple daily life filled with warmth and happiness.

In the middle of it all, Wren quietly excused herself to go to the restroom. There was still something on her mind.

She quickly opened the official traffic control app on her phone, found the vehicle search portal, and carefully entered the license plate number. After double-checking it for accuracy, she tapped "search."

The page loaded for a few seconds, then a line of text popped up.

[No information found for this license plate number.]

"..." Wren’s fingers froze, and a grave look flickered in her eyes.

’The license plate for that white car isn’t registered. It must be a fake.’

’Recalling the incident on the road... after merging into my lane, the driver sped up and slowed down erratically, deliberately hemming me in. And they were using a fake plate.’

’All signs point to them being anything but a novice. It felt more like a deliberate provocation, a test.’

With a heavy heart, Wren put away her phone, lost in thought.

’I only have a fake license plate, and I didn’t even see the driver. With no other evidence, who can I suspect?’

’But if I think about who’s been deliberately giving me a hard time lately, making my life miserable... besides Claire Bennett, I can’t think of anyone else.’
