Second Genesis
Chapter 645: Difference
Grey moved before "Elowen" could finish drawing more power from the formation, his body cutting sideways as three dark-gold tendrils ripped through the courtyard behind him. He didn’t try to outrun them in a straight line, instead moving through the spaces his Resonant Sense had already mapped, shifting just enough each time that stone burst apart where he had been an instant earlier.
The pattern became clearer with every exchange.
A tendril curved toward his left shoulder and Grey let it get close enough to feel the pressure rolling off it before ducking underneath, then used the movement to carry himself forward. Two more snapped down from above, one wide and one narrow, but their timing was wrong, enough that Grey slipped between them and sent a cluster of white-gold threads whipping out from his fingers.
"Elowen" recoiled the moment they touched her.
The threads latched onto her forearm, shoulder, and side before drilling beneath the gold that had replaced her skin, each one spreading into thinner strands as they reached deeper. Grey felt resistance immediately, not just from her body, but from something inside that seemed to understand what he was doing well enough to fight back.
A pulse of dark-gold energy tore through the threads.
Grey grunted as several snapped, then shifted his weight while another tendril passed close enough to peel flesh from his back. He didn’t retreat, instead throwing out another wave of white-gold lines and forcing them into the openings the first set had created.
The battle changed from that point.
Outside, "Elowen" kept attacking with the same overwhelming strength, wings slashing, claws lengthening, tendrils ripping apart everything they touched. Inside, Grey’s threads crawled through her Neural Frame, following pathways that looked almost familiar until they suddenly twisted in directions that had nothing to do with the woman he knew.
That was where the real fight was.
Grey couldn’t tell where Elowen ended and the other presence began, not at first, especially when so much of what he found seemed to belong to both of them. The memories were hers, the instincts were hers, even the way the Neural Frame reacted carried pieces of her personality, but something about the whole thing felt wrong in the same way a smile could look perfect and still make your skin crawl.
"Why didn’t you know?!" "Elowen" shrieked.
Grey twisted underneath one wing and used the white-gold threads already connected to her body to pull himself forward instead of stepping. His legs were getting weaker by the second, and once he realized that, he stopped trusting them entirely, allowing the threads to wrap around his own joints and move him like a puppet when his muscles could no longer keep up.
That bought him time.
A tendril cut across his thigh, another opened his side, and Grey used the recoil from both impacts to swing himself around her rather than fight the force directly. The white-gold threads kept digging deeper into her as he moved, taking every bit of information they found and feeding it back into Resonant Sense.
Grey started noticing the same contradiction again.
The fake could copy Elowen’s words, her irritation, even the softness she sometimes tried to hide, but the intent underneath never matched. Real Elowen could be sharp, proud, stubborn enough to make Grey want to shake her, yet even when she was angry there was always something beneath it, some concern for the people around her that she tried to bury under formality and responsibility.
This thing didn’t have that.
Its kindness ended at the performance.
Every gentle memory Grey touched had been hollowed out and rebuilt around control, every moment of concern turned into another reason to possess, punish, or dominate. It knew what Elowen would say, but it didn’t understand why she would say it.
Grey found the first separation line there.
His threads moved faster.
"Elowen" screamed and the catacomb formation answered, dark-gold energy pouring into her hard enough that the remaining stone around them split apart. Grey was thrown backward, but the threads anchoring him to her body snapped tight and dragged him forward again, his arms hanging almost uselessly while the artificial pathways inside his chest burned through the last of their reserve.
He couldn’t keep this up much longer, but neither could she.
Grey forced more threads into the divide he had found, not cutting randomly but pulling at the places where intention and memory stopped matching. Elowen’s real fragments clung together around pain, fear, responsibility, and that stupid little hope that Grey would somehow notice her, while everything else wrapped around those pieces like a parasite pretending the feelings belonged to it.
Grey finally understood where to tear.
White-gold light exploded through "Elowen’s" body as every thread tightened at once, ripping apart the pathways that didn’t belong and leaving the fragments that still felt like her untouched. The thing controlling her shrieked through the same mouth Elowen had been using, but now Grey could hear the difference perfectly.
One voice was furious.
The other was terrified.
Grey pulled harder.
The dark-gold circuits shattered through her body as though someone had smashed stained glass from the inside, fragments of foreign influence breaking apart while the surviving pieces of Elowen’s Neural Frame were dragged together. Grey slammed those remnants into place with every bit of Resonant control he had left, forcing them to connect before they could scatter again.
The gold faded.
Her wings disappeared first, then the halo, then the metallic sheen beneath her skin, until Elowen’s real body remained in front of him, completely bare and already falling.
Grey stumbled forward and caught her.
For a second, he simply held her against his chest, both of them soaked in blood and shaking badly enough that he wasn’t sure which one of them was supporting the other. Then his eyes dropped before he could stop them, and something like his usual expression almost managed to return.
"Lost too much blood to even get it up," Grey whispered. "This is definitely worse than being a quick shot."
His vision immediately swam.
Grey’s knees gave out, but he kept one arm around Elowen as long as he could, lowering with her rather than letting her hit the ground. The world blurred completely before he finally felt himself falling too.
His lips moved one last time.
"I found you." Grey’s eyes closed. "I knew the difference after all."
