Sacrificed To The Triplet Alpha Kings
Chapter 398: The Blood Debt
"You knew I would come?" Victoria asked.
"Of course," Thalia said. "You’re desperate. Lilith is the last piece of family you have left that’s worth saving. You would do anything to bring her back. Cross any line. Make any deal. Even come to me."
"Will you help me?" Victoria asked.
Thalia was quiet for a long moment. Then: "That depends."
"On what?"
"On whether you’re willing to hear the rest of the truth," Thalia said. "Because Victoria, there’s more to the story. More about what really happened fifteen years ago. More about why the hunters attacked. More about our family and the Morvaine gift and the secret Mother died protecting."
Victoria felt ice slide down her spine. "What secret?"
"The reason we were hunted," Thalia said quietly. "The reason our family has been persecuted for generations. The reason Mother insisted we hide instead of using our power."
"Tell me," Victoria said.
Thalia walked to a shelf and pulled down an ancient book. The cover was made of leather that looked like it had been preserved for centuries. The pages were yellowed with age.
"This is the original Morvaine grimoire," Thalia said. "The one Mother kept hidden even from the coven elders. The one that tells the truth about where our gift came from."
Victoria’s hands shook as she took the book.
"Our gift is not from the Moon Goddess," Thalia said quietly. "It never was. That was a lie Mother told to make us seem less dangerous. Less threatening. Less like the abominations the hunters believed we were."
"Then where did it come from?" Victoria asked.
Thalia’s smile was terrible. "From something older. Something darker. Something that traded bond manipulation abilities to our ancestor in exchange for a price that our family has been paying ever since."
Victoria opened the grimoire with trembling hands.
The grimoire was written in Old Morvaine, the language their family had spoken before adapting to modern supernatural society. Victoria had learned it as a child, sitting in her mother’s study, copying symbols and phrases until they were burned into her memory.
But she had never seen this book before.
Had never known it existed.
Victoria turned the ancient pages carefully, scanning the faded ink, and felt her understanding of everything she thought she knew begin to crumble.
"In the year of ash and blood, when the first packs claimed the territories and covens bent knee to wolf law, the Morvaine line stood defiant.
We would not bow. Would not submit. Would not accept the bonds forced upon us by those who believed strength of fang made them our masters.
But defiance without power is suicide.
So our ancestor....Morgana Morvaine, the first of our blood, made a choice that would echo through generations.
She sought power from the spaces between life and death. From the entities that existed before the Moon Goddess shaped the world. From something older than gods and more patient than time.
She found it in the Veil."
Victoria’s breath caught.
The Veil. The space between the mortal realm and the Underworld. The place where souls passed from life to death. Where reality was thin and anything that knew how to navigate it could move between worlds.
"The entity that dwelled in the Veil offered Morgana a bargain, the grimoire continued. Power over bonds. The ability to create connections where none existed. To strengthen ties that were weak. To sever bonds that seemed permanent. To manipulate the fundamental threads that tied all supernatural beings together.
In exchange, the entity demanded payment.
Not gold. Not service. Not worship.
Blood.
Every generation of Morvaines would owe a death to the Veil. One member of the bloodline would die before their time, consumed by the entity as payment for the power we wielded. Claimed when the Veil decided the debt was due.
Morgana agreed.
And our family has been paying the price ever since."
Victoria looked up from the grimoire with tears burning in her eyes.
"This is why we’ve been hunted," she whispered. "Not because of what we could do. Because of where the power came from."
"Yes," Thalia said. She had been watching Victoria read, her black eyes unreadable. "Our gift is not divine. It’s borrowed. Stolen. Paid for with blood debt that our family has owed for three hundred years."
"Mother knew this?" Victoria asked.
"Mother knew everything," Thalia said. "She just chose to hide it. To pretend our gift was a blessing from the Moon Goddess instead of a bargain with something that feeds on death. She thought if we used the power carefully, if we only healed and guided and never controlled, the entity would be satisfied with the deaths it claimed naturally."
"And you disagreed," Victoria said.
"I disagreed," Thalia confirmed. "Because Victoria, the entity does not care how we use the power. It does not care if we’re healers or tyrants. It only cares that the debt is paid. And every generation, one of us dies to feed it."
Victoria thought about the family members she had lost over the years. Her grandmother who had died young. Her uncle who had vanished without explanation. Her cousin who had drowned despite being an excellent swimmer.
All of them claimed before their time.
All of them payment for power the family used.
"The massacre," Victoria said slowly. "Fifteen years ago. Was that...."
"The debt being collected?" Thalia finished. "Maybe. Or maybe the hunters were just hunters and the attack had nothing to do with the entity at all. I don’t know. What I do know is that I watched our family die and I decided I was done playing by Mother’s rules."
"So you made your own bargains," Victoria said. "With demons. With Underworld entities. You corrupted the gift deliberately."
"I weaponized it," Thalia corrected. "I took the power we already owed blood for and made it stronger. Made myself stronger. If our family is going to be hunted anyway, if we’re going to pay in blood anyway, then we might as well have power worth the price."
