Chapter 371: What If It Doesn’t Work?

Waking up was harder than it should have been.

Lilith opened her eyes to afternoon sunlight streaming through the window and felt like she was trying to drag herself out of quicksand.

Everything was heavy. Her limbs. Her head. Even her eyelids felt like they weighed more than they should.

But she was awake.

Alive.

For now.

Lilith pushed herself upright slowly...careful, testing her body’s limits and immediately felt the bonds flare to life.

Not painful. Not overwhelming. Just present in a way they had not been before.

She could feel Nicholas somewhere in the estate. Feel his steady presence like a beacon. Feel the careful control he was maintaining over emotions that wanted to spiral.

Could feel Sebastian closer. In the hallway maybe. Or just outside the door. His anxiety bleeding through the connection like static.

Could feel Lucian pacing somewhere below. Restless energy and barely contained panic making the bond between them pulse erratically.

They knew she was awake.

All three of them knew the moment her eyes opened.

Lilith looked down at her hands and flexed her fingers experimentally. They worked. Everything worked. She was not dead or broken or consumed by the curse.

Not yet.

The door opened and Sebastian entered carrying a tray with food.

He looked exhausted. Dark circles under his eyes. Hair disheveled like he had been running his hands through it repeatedly. Clothes rumpled like he had slept in them.

But the moment he saw Lilith sitting up in bed, his entire face transformed.

Relief so intense it was almost painful flooded through the bond between them.

"You’re awake," Sebastian said, and his voice cracked on the words.

"I’m awake," Lilith confirmed.

Sebastian set the tray down on the nightstand and sat on the edge of the bed. He reached out and took her hand like he needed to touch her to confirm she was real.

"How do you feel?" he asked.

Lilith considered the question. "Weak. Tired. Like I’ve been sick for a week and my body is still recovering."

"You were in a coma for three days," Sebastian said. "And before that you nearly died in battle. Your body has been through hell."

"I know," Lilith said quietly.

Sebastian squeezed her hand gently. "You need to eat. Build your strength back up. Elena says you need to be as strong as possible before the transformation attempt."

Lilith looked at the tray. Bread. Cheese. Fruit. A glass of water. Simple food that should have looked appealing.

But her stomach turned at the sight of it.

"I’m not hungry," Lilith said.

"You need to eat anyway," Sebastian insisted. He picked up a piece of bread and held it out to her. "Please. Even if it’s just a few bites."

Lilith took the bread and bit into it reluctantly.

It tasted wrong.

Not spoiled. Not bad. Just wrong in a way she could not explain. Like her taste buds were not processing flavor correctly anymore.

She chewed slowly and forced herself to swallow.

"Good," Sebastian said. "Keep going."

Lilith ate mechanically. Bread. Cheese. A few pieces of fruit. Drinking water between bites to help everything go down.

Through the bond she could feel Sebastian’s relief growing with each bite she took.

"This is day one," Lilith said after finishing half the food. "Of the two days I’m supposed to rest before the transformation."

"Yes," Sebastian confirmed.

"What happens tomorrow?" Lilith asked.

"You rest more," Sebastian said. "Build your strength. Spend time with...." He stopped. "With us. And then the day after tomorrow, Elena performs the transformation ritual."

Lilith felt something twist in her chest. Fear and determination in equal measure.

"What exactly happens during the transformation?" she asked.

Sebastian was quiet for a moment. "Elena explained it to us while you were unconscious. She said you’ll lie in a ritual circle. She’ll guide you through the process of pulling the curse inward. Making the death magic part of your own power instead of something foreign consuming you."

"And if it works?" Lilith asked.

"Then you become something unprecedented," Sebastian said. "A witch who can wield both life magic and death magic. Someone who can manipulate bonds and curses. A bridge between the mortal realm and..." He stopped. "And whatever comes after."

"And if it doesn’t work?"

Sebastian’s expression shuttered. "It will work. It has to work."

But Lilith could feel his fear through the bond. Could feel the terror he was trying so hard to hide.

"Sebastian," Lilith said quietly. "If the transformation fails...."

"It won’t," Sebastian interrupted.

"But if it does..."

"Then we find another way," Sebastian said firmly. "Victoria is already researching alternatives. Elena knows more about curse breaking than anyone alive. We have options. We’re not giving up on you."

Lilith wanted to believe him. Wanted to trust that there were other options if the transformation failed.

But she could feel the curse coiled in her chest. Could feel how strong it was. How ancient. How absolute.

Breaking it felt impossible.

Transforming it felt like trying to swallow the sun.

"I’m scared," Lilith admitted.

Sebastian’s grip on her hand tightened. "I know. So am I."

"What if I’m not strong enough?" Lilith asked. "What if I try to pull the curse inward and it destroys me instead?"

"Then we’ll be there to pull you back," Sebastian said. "All three of us. The bonds will hold you even if the magic doesn’t. You’re not alone in this, Lilith. You’ve never been alone."

Lilith felt tears burning behind her eyes.

"I don’t want to die," she whispered.

"You’re not going to die," Sebastian said, and his voice was absolutely certain even though Lilith could feel his terror through the bond. "You’re going to transform the curse. You’re going to survive this. And then we’re going to have the life together that we should have had from the beginning."

Lilith wanted to believe that.

Wanted to imagine a future where she was not dying. Where the curse was gone. Where she could just exist with the three men she loved without fate or prophecy or divine punishment hanging over them.
