Chapter 1074: Chapter 162: Troublesome Snowstorm (Part 2)
The convoy started moving again, with Hu Xiaodong and Huo Yuankai leading the way as usual.
Of course, even though they were searching for the children, they couldn’t just drive aimlessly without a purpose.
Based on their prior plans and considering the children’s abilities and intentions for going out, Hu Xiaodong led the convoy to circle within a 5-kilometer radius from their initial base.
After all, given the capability of the two children, managing to walk 5 kilometers would not be an easy task.
But just circling and not actively searching like Hu Xiaodong and his team were doing, honestly speaking, finding the children would be a miracle.
After 40 minutes of driving, the dark clouds hanging over them seemed to get thicker, and Tang Xiaoquan felt it was time. He picked up the hand-held radio and sent a message to Hu Xiaodong: "Hu, looks like the rain is coming. Tell Brother Huo we should head back; maybe the kids are already home. Over!"
There was no need for Hu Xiaodong to say much; Tang Xiaoquan’s words clearly reached Huo Yuankai’s ears.
But for the sake of the group, Hu Xiaodong still formally asked, "Brother Huo, you heard what Xiaotang said, right? He’s correct; it’s not convenient to drive with a fully-loaded vehicle in the rain. I think we should head back to the base; maybe the kids are actually home."
After driving for so long, Huo Yuankai couldn’t say much more. He may have been reluctant in his heart, but they had already been riding with him for more than 40 minutes.
In a post-apocalyptic world, two things are the most precious: food supplies and various fuels.
Clearly, the Survivor Team and Huo were not related, yet they patiently stayed with him and spent fuel to help him find people, which was already very considerate.
So...
"Yes, yes," Huo Yuankai nodded, not saying any more.
Getting the nod from the man beside him, Hu Xiaodong immediately passed the message down, then turned the vehicle back towards their home base.
Four cars moved in a grand convoy, and if there were bandits at this time, they would definitely score big.
Of course, that’s only if they had the capability to deal with this highly battle-ready Survivor Team.
Since the convoy was always moving around the base, it didn’t take much effort for the Survivors to return to the starting point of departure.
The vehicles were parked and positioned!
Hu Xiaodong was the first to jump out of the vehicle, calling on everyone to ensure the cars were locked securely, then he took out the black-tech surveillance cameras that Li Zhong and Li Guo had put together from the vehicle.
After eyeballing the height of several vehicles, he finally mounted them on the semi-truck.
He used multi-purpose bolts to securely fasten the specially made stands to the exposed steel pipes of the truck.
Once finished, Hu Xiaodong immediately took out the tablet from his pocket.
Earlier, he had specially asked Li Zhong how to use this black-tech.
So now, operating it was relatively smooth.
With the software that Li Zhong and Li Guo had developed beforehand, the tablet quickly connected to the surveillance cameras.
"Wow, those ’Zhong’ and ’Guo’ brothers really have some skills!" Seeing the images successfully display on the screen, Hu Xiaodong quietly praised.
"How is it, Brother Hu? Can it be used?" Tang Xiaoquan quietly approached, naturally interested in these tech gadgets as a young person.
Hu Xiaodong brought the tablet closer to Tang Xiaoquan’s face and nodded, replying, "It can be used, just not sure if there will be a signal when we get home later."
If the material was stolen during the night, it would be a huge loss.
Especially considering the dark sky and the impending storm; if the tech from Li Zhong and Li Guo worked well, it would surely facilitate nighttime surveillance for the Survivor Squad members.
"Alright, let’s head inside." With the car doors locked and surveillance equipment completed, all tasks were accomplished. Hu Xiaodong waved his hand, calling on the team to head indoors.
Again navigating through twists and turns, but this time Tang Xiaoquan wasn’t confused.
Relying on the memory from last time, he could basically predict the route that Huo Yuankai would lead them on.
In other words, even if danger occurred, he could rely on his memory to escape from there.
The two-story building remained as dim as ever when the team entered, immediately heading to the second floor.
But as they passed the corridor corner, Hua Biao suddenly halted Huo Yuankai, who was walking at the front of the group, and gestured for the team behind to stop.
"What’s up? Did you find something?" Hu Xiaodong knew Hua Biao well; this guy wouldn’t act without reason.
Judging by his expression right now, Hu Xiaodong was sure the latter must have spotted something unusual.
And indeed, Hu Xiaodong’s observation was correct; Hua Biao had indeed noticed something questionable.
He slowly lowered his body, glanced at the scene upstairs by leaning against the wall, and then returned.
"What’s happening?" Hua Biao’s actions made everyone worried, prompting Hu Xiaodong to question again.
Pointing at the nearby trash pile, Hua Biao frowned deeply.
Hu Xiaodong eyed the scattered items in the corridor with confusion. Clearly, he didn’t understand Hua Biao’s meaning, so he asked again, "Hua, just tell us directly, don’t keep us guessing. What’s the matter here? Is there a problem with this pile?"
"The stuff isn’t the problem, the placement is," Hua Biao responded.
"Oh?" Hu Xiaodong scratched his head as if grasping something, murmuring, "Placement issue..."
"Exactly, the placement issue!" Hua Biao affirmed, then clarified, "When we left, I deliberately placed the barrel and wooden board in the middle of the path, but now look, the barrel has been pushed aside, and the wooden board has cracks. If it was an animal passing by, it wouldn’t have broken the board, so..."
"So you think someone came through here!?"
The declaration stunned everyone.
Firstly, they were surprised by Hua Biao’s precaution.
But considering his profession, everyone became understanding.
After all, Hua Biao was from the reconnaissance unit, infiltration was his expertise.
When Hua Biao heard they would return, he instinctively set a detection barrier. Unexpectedly, there was indeed some discovery.
Secondly, the movement of objects itself drew attention; lest we forget, the Survivors returned primarily to search for children.
And currently, all signs pointed to the possibility the children might have returned.
Among all, Huo Yuankai was undoubtedly the most excited and thrilled. Without waiting for Hua Biao’s reaction, he swiftly dashed upstairs.
By the time Hua Biao turned around to attempt forbidding him, he was already more than 4 or 5 steps ahead, too late to halt.
Indeed! The displaced obstacles could signify the children’s return but it was merely a possibility.
In other words, it might instead be other individuals here.
After all, this building had long lost its ownership; as long as one dared, anyone could enter.
Huo Yuankai was undeniably unstoppable, but Hua Biao did hold back Hu Xiaodong and the rest.
After whispering a few words to the group, he went in pursuit alone.
Taking precaution, if someone still lurked within, in Hua Biao’s view, vigilance was imperative.
No choice; amidst the apocalypse, hearts were hard to fathom, especially as they carried loads of supplies now.
It was hard to say if they hadn’t been targeted since leaving the base already.
