Chapter 1060: Chapter 1045: Voices Through the Wall (Part 2)
"Damn, I really didn’t expect these scoundrels to have such good luck and not get killed by zombies!" Lei Tong squeezed his fists, showing traces of ferocity on his face.
"Captain, those guys are still alive. What’s your plan for dealing with them?"
The first to act gains the advantage, while the last suffers the consequences. In the current situation, Old Xu knows the whereabouts of the scoundrels, whereas the scoundrels’ knowledge of Old Xu’s movements remains stuck in past rooftop activities.
Old Xu didn’t even think before solemnly responding, "They don’t know our location. I’m planning to sneak over after midnight tonight and take them out when the opportunity arises."
"Good!" Without any extra words, Lei Tong stood up, "Since the captain plans to act tonight, you should get some rest. I’ll guard the place, so you can sleep peacefully."
Adequate physical strength is a guarantee for action. Old Xu also didn’t argue with Lei Tong. After nodding with his head bowed, he lay down, fully clothed, finding a spot by the bed.
Time trickled away like sand through fingers, and the night in the wasteland city was always so noisy.
What people call an ’all-night city’ is probably like this, filled with moving figures throughout every corner of the city’s streets and alleys.
Unfortunately, these beings moved aimlessly, with lifeless expressions, merely soulless zombies.
At midnight, Old Xu awoke on time, without Lei Tong calling him or any timed reminders. He opened his eyes as if he were a clockwork doll keeping perfect time.
Lei Tong saw Old Xu rise without any surprise, because these scouts seemed to have a natural sensitivity to time, and Old Xu was undoubtedly the best among them.
Old Xu checked his wristwatch to confirm the time, then stood up to stretch his limbs.
Since the young man beside him was still asleep, Old Xu moved very gently.
After finishing his stretching, Old Xu pulled out Tiger’s Fang, biting it between his teeth as usual.
Without saying anything unnecessary, he patted Lei Tong’s shoulder, then jumped onto the window.
Like a four-legged gecko, Old Xu used the decorative rock seams protruding from the wall to maneuver sideways.
Because it was a roadside house, the apartment building itself didn’t have a balcony design, so Old Xu had to slowly move towards the air conditioning cabinet set outside the neighboring window.
Once there, Old Xu quietly poked his head through.
In front of him, the window was closed, curtains drawn, showing the scoundrels had some awareness of defense.
But before taking action, Old Xu had already confirmed the activity on the other side; through the wall he had heard snoring, making it easy for him to know the scoundrels had gone to sleep.
Midnight is when the human biological clock slows down for adjustment, and people are most prone to drowsiness at this final point.
Particularly, the scoundrels had just gone through a life-and-death ordeal, their accumulated fatigue in body and mind was hard to resist.
Old Xu couldn’t believe those crafty guys could have any willpower to resist the body’s signals of drowsiness.
Still, lacking burglar bars, Old Xu easily manipulated the side window open using some fine wire he had scavenged earlier.
After opening the window, he immediately took out Tiger’s Fang to cut open the screen, and then swiftly climbed inside.
Honestly, with everything that just transpired, if the scoundrels had been even a little bit alert, they should have noticed something.
After all, it was wintertime; leaving the window open would have let in the north wind.
But as Old Xu deduced, the scoundrels’ group seemed exhausted from the previous chase. They were completely unaware of the impending crisis.
Old Xu wouldn’t give any chances for the opponent to react. After landing inside, he quickly surveyed everything in the room and soon found his targets on the bed.
Two people, the bedroom had a total of two scoundrels. Upon entering, Old Xu immediately heard their loud snoring.
The sound was truly earth-shattering, as if they hadn’t slept in ages.
To avoid their snoring from attracting zombies outside, Old Xu quickly turned around to close the window.
Still, there was no sign of reaction; the scoundrels continued their dead sleep.
Holding the knife, Old Xu carefully crept to the bedside. After glimpsing the scoundrel’s silly sleeping face, he slashed the blade across its throat.
At that moment, blood shot out. Old Xu felt a hot stream spray onto his face.
This time, the scoundrel truly woke up; the pain in the throat made him open his eyes instantly.
But human brain’s reaction is always slower than the body’s sensation, so the scoundrel’s first reaction upon opening his eyes was not pain but astonishment at the man’s sudden appearance.
With blood on his face, Old Xu’s visage truly resembled the vengeful spirit from a horror film, integrating with the post-apocalyptic environment and the shivering cold wind at the window, it would certainly evoke fear and panic.
The scoundrel was clearly frightened by Old Xu, yet almost instantly, the sharp pain in his throat completely filled his mind.
Instinctively, he wanted to call for help, but his severed throat could no longer make any sound.
And the more the scoundrel tried to vocalize, the more fiercely the blood spurted.
Raising his hand, trying to cover the wound! The scoundrel tried to stop the bleeding at his throat with his hands.
But evidently, his attempts were futile, as his consciousness gradually faded with the continuous flow of blood.
However, the scoundrel’s twitching awakened his companion.
Annoyed, the companion raised his hand to push the throat-slashed scoundrel, grumbling in a lazy curse, "Ugh... Damn it, sleep is sleep, why move around!"
But just when the scoundrel’s words reached halfway, they suddenly halted, because within his unconscious slump, he felt something viscous.
As he opened his eyes, an old, calloused hand descended like a towering mountain. Then he felt his chest was pierced by a sharp blade.
One stab, two stabs, three stabs—Old Xu’s movements were lightning-fast.
After the three stabs, another look at the scoundrel—his eyes widened as he died with a gurgling murmur.
From the start of the operation to the conclusion with the knife drawn, Old Xu spent just five minutes. In five minutes, he effortlessly killed two scoundrels, showcasing his impressive skill.
After achieving success, Old Xu felt no sense of pride; he quickly withdrew the knife and then dashed towards the bedroom entrance at the fastest speed.
Waiting in ambush, since Old Xu wasn’t sure how many scoundrels were left alive, he did so to prevent anyone from the adjacent room from hearing the unusual sound and coming over to investigate. This way, he could catch them by surprise.
Unfortunately, Old Xu clearly overestimated the remaining scoundrels’ vigilance. He waited for a full two minutes, outside everything was calm, apart from the loud snoring, there wasn’t the slightest sound of footsteps.
Since they didn’t make any moves, Old Xu had no choice but to take action himself.
After peeking outside through the door, Old Xu confirmed his new targets again.
In the living room, the scoundrels were still asleep, still numbering two. Old Xu contemplated for a moment then quietly moved in.
This time, the scoundrels were sleeping in positions more scattered, with at least 2 meters between them.
This certainly added more complications for Old Xu, but he was a veteran. The circumstances he had encountered in the past were far more complex than this.
So in response to this, he appeared quite composed.
